A little insight on the Hakeem Nicks story

Mr. Scot

I don't pretend to have inside knowledge of the situation but as an unbiased viewer it seems that on one hand there was a team that had familiar faces lobbying to get Nicks there in a 3rd WR role. On the other hand was a former pro personnel guy that used to be in Nicks organization and was in dire need of a #1 WR and still told Nicks that he'd probably be best off somewhere else.

Doesn't seem like damage control to me. As fans we get to voice our opinions on message boards but ultimately our opinions mean fug all.

Gettleman had every opportunity to have this guy and didn't want him. I don't think it was because of some low ball offer as many here like to imply.

So it had absolutely nothing to do with the Steve Smith fiasco? Gettleman just didn't want him? Yeah sorry man, I don't buy it.

This sounds like sour grapes over the guy signing elsewhere for basically the same money to me.

I thought Nicks was actually quoted as saying that Gettleman told him he thought he'd be a better fit somewhere else? Maybe I read a post wrong somewhere along the way?

Because if a GM of an NFL team really needs help at a position you play and then gives you the it's not you it's me speech, well, it's you.

^ This. I wanted Nicks too, but am honestly happy we don't have him because I KNOW GMan KNOWS Nicks-the good, bad, and ugly. Not to mention he's the hometown kid to boot so it was slamdunk city if we wanted.

I was far more frustrated by not signing an undrafted Da'Rick Rogers (also a freakin Colt) 100% risk free with huge potential, just needing a chance to show it, than a supposedly lazy Nicks for big $$$ coming off a horrible year with injury questions.

Solid take.

You read right.

Apparently it was us who turned down Nicks, instead of the other way around. Never mind that matter of us offering him a contract.

It's speculation, but apparently we offered him a decent prove it contract.  The Colts offered him a more incentive based contract with the possibility of more $.

Seems like Nicks came back to us and Gettleman wasn't going to have a bidding war with the Colts, so he let them have him.

I have a sneaky suspicion Gettleman might do something crazy in the draft, like go WR/WR.  Our WR core would more than likely instantly become a strength, much like he did with DT last season.

I don't remember the exact numbers but it was pretty close to what he got with the Colts.

We could sit here and spin this away and away to make ourselves look and feel better for hours.

As for the draft and the position, that's the dream, let's hope it happens.

Also regarding Nicks, just take a look at Vince Young.

Both were promising talents that had tremendous success at the onset of their careers, and for whatever reason have fallen off the map completely. I read today that the Browns are going to kick the tires on VY. That's a team that really needs a QB so they are looking into options. But if he leaves town without a contract I don't think the majority of Browns fans are going to lose sleep over it. Nicks for us was almost an identical situation to that one. If we signed him, great. I would have been on board and cheered for him on Sundays. But the organization for whatever reason didn't like the fit (maybe wanted more money in a bidding war, maybe didn't like the work ethic or injury history, maybe wanted him in a larger role than he wanted to shoulder, who knows?) so I don't feel the need to bash them prematurely before we even see how it pans out.

As someone else mentioned Da'rick Rodgers (sp?) I thought and still think they screwed up on that one because it was essentially a risk free move to make for possible big payoff, but again I won't be losing sleep over it.

Considering there was a large portion of our fan base wanting to trade for him last season, I'd say that comparison doesn't hold much weight.

What "our fan base" wanted or wants is pretty irrelevant....considering that most know little to nothing about putting together an NFL team or evaluating talent. (even though most think they do).
