Let Kemba walk

Gay only really struggled in Toronto. The rest of his career he has been an 18-20 ppg scorer at 45% from the field. One big reason why he struggled in Toronto is because he had the green-light to shoot as much as he wants and was forced to shoot that much. In Charlotte with Big Al, Kemba, and possibly Afflalo he would not get more than 15 shots a game or so. I could even get on board with Deng, but he's not at Rudy Gay's level offensively and defensively he isn't that much better too (Rudy can be a very solid defensive player). We just can't go into the season with Big Al and Kemba being our primary options again. Even if we added Afflalo I just don't see him as anything more than Kemba (a #3 option at best).

Sorry it's the cap on the team, sf will always need to be a defensive stopper first and foremost with Big Al here.

Hence the only options are upgrading Sg, PF or completely starting over.

Best way to improve the team would be get a pass first drive and kick PG, a solid Sg with 3 range and drive ability and a true reliable stretch 4. you have a really low ceiling with a core of MKG, Jefferson and Kemba.

Not much you can do about it with MKG being a cog on defense to cover up the limitations of most of the starting lineup defensively.

MKG makes that lineup work defensively and is actually the most important piece contention wise.

Signing Al was a very short term move with a low ceiling, pretty much a 1 & done 7th/8th seed with Jefferson and Kemba here. Team will also pretty much have to be rebuilt in two seasons.

Kemba is an inefficient volume scorer... so let's sign Rudy Gay!!! Gay is a team killer, you could kind of see Memphis improving with him gone but Toronto went from being in the Wiggins sweepstakes to the third seed post-Gay. Sacramento has a top young center and is still at the top of the draft. Gay's teams notoriously perform at a level LESS than the sum of their parts.

Kemba was forced to shoot more out of necessity, especially since Hendo consistently fails to own up to his contact. Once Kemba gained report with Al he became a much more efficient floor general, shooting is definitely a work in progress though.

I didn't expect the Raptors to make the play offs when they traded Gay, but it did allow them to give a bigger role to Kyle Lowry and Demar DeRozan. They got more freedom and it allowed them to become the Raptors 1-2 combination. They also had good supporting players like Johnson, Ross, Valanciunas and a decent enough bench. So they had the talent, and I guess they became more of a balanced team without Rudy Gay.

That being said, while Rudy Gay is isn't an all star, he does bring scoring power to the table. I'm not sure if I would want him here or not, but he has been a productive player to date in his career. Some viewed Jefferson as a questionable pick up in free agency, after all the guy has only been part of a play off team twice in his nine season career before he came here. Yet, he came here and played a big role in getting us to the play offs. So who knows, perhaps Clifford and his staff could get the best out of Rudy Gay?

I'm buying every part of the post except this one.

I think it is premised on Big Al dropping off because of his age. But he isn't athletic at all and will be pretty much playing the same style of ball in 3-4 years that he is now.

The hornets ceiling is somewhere around the 4th seed. That's conditioned on either upgrading the point (management isn't going to do that) or finding a second scoring option, which seems feasible.

With plenty of cap space and a young core, the hornets are going to go as far as their PG play will allow.
