How I think this draft is going to go down.

Recommended Posts

It is important to say that no matter what opinion we have of our GM's tendencies in the draft, they can be filed under "Your guess is as good as mine" drawer.

Last year was his first draft. A miracle happened, A star fell to his lap. (Pun semi intended). Every choice he made it was made in the interest of this team for the long haul. Look at his picks with the exception of the first..

Star

KK

Kugbila

Klein

Barner.

The first two solidified the interior line for at least a decade. Kugbila, unfortunately did not get much playtime due to his injury and is considered a 2014 pick by Gettleman in light of his injury. Klein, being the BPA was a steal and helped the LB corp several times. Again thinking about the future, gettleman made the head scratcher move to pick Barner. "But we have 30,000 RB's! How could he!" Well, One of those RB's is injury prone, and the other is on the wrong side of 30. More than likely they will be dealt with in the coming years. He saw value in this pick and in the long run it will pay dividends.

This year, there's a bit of uncertainty about what position will be picked at 28. Chances are, as much as we want that Tackle or Wide receiver. Another position may be picked. Around 28, there will be a pool of defensive players that could be available. Ealy, Van noy, Shazier, Pryor, Fuller. There's also the possibility that a certain Tight end from UNC may be available. There has been an idea circling my head for the past couple of days as well. That Gettleman may actually value these other positions more than Offensive tackle at 28 since the talent drop off is very far. Yes, we need a Left Tackle, yes, that is a priority. But I believe he is going to give this position competition in a later round.

The 28th pick to some is the most crucial, since it sets the bar and it is the first pick in the first round.

There are three scenarios that I believe will happen.

1. A high rated player, top 15 player falls to us. Every year there is one that seems to fall. We are at the prime spot to have one and draft him.

2. No one falls and we pick the BPA which will more than likely be a defensive player, D line or D back.

3. Take the bull by the horns and draft a Wide Receiver by the name of Cody Latimer.

Yeah. Cody Latimer. He's been shooting up draft boards. He has it. Proehl and Gregory have met with him. I believe he has been worked out twice (Maybe more, don't remember). He's a big body receiver, that is Dauntless going over the middle, is physical, has speed, and very good hands. The attributes you want in a #1 guy. There's been interest in him by other late round picking teams as well, Mainly the 49ers.

I for one will not be upset if he is picked in the first. It is essentially a second round pick. You're only 4 picks away from picking in the second.

Here's a visual on how I believe this draft will unfold if Latimer is the first pick.

In conclusion, I have no insider information, I am merely speculating. Much like most. I have no clue to what may happen so late in the first. Several things could happen that alter the person we pick at 28. Heck for all I know we trade out and move down. The good thing is that most of our questions will be answered in 11 days. :D

i agree if there is a run on offensive players(wr,te,ot) we could very well end up picking D as our bpa.  that could mean any position besides mike and maybe dt.

gettleman calling the shots is freakn awesome.  looking forward to how it all unfolds and put it my request for thur, friday off. o yeh!

I think you need to add a 4th possibility.

Pat Kirwin and others see the QB's not being that strong and only has one in the first round in his latest mock.

Many of the teams at the top that did not get a QB in the first, will want to jump Houston for the 2nd QB off the board.  We are in a prime place for a trade down.  Moving from 28 to 39 with Jax for instance, would still get us basically the same player and pick up some extra goodies.

Why does everyone insist that BPA must be at a position that is not a need? WR is more than likely the BPA at our pick..

No one is saying that.

The OP said that IF there was a run on OT and WR in the first, defense may be the bpa.

However, it may play out just the opposite...that is why it us a wait and see how it unfolds.

The NFL is a copycat league.  Mark my words if there is a run it will be on defensive players early.

That is what I think.  After the first round, the defensive talent at DE, 3-4 OLB, S, and 4-3 OLB sorta drops off a good bit.

I look at the strengths of the draft too.  Teams feel that they can get that WR later.

Strengths of the draft, IMO are WR, RB, CB, DT.  RB and CB don't have much top-tier talent, but they are deep.

I say the same thing. If Denver taught us anything this year is that offenses have a ceiling. Calvin Johnson's been running around breaking all kind of records and Detroit can barely finish 8-8. Us on the other hand didn't even have a WR that was capable of 60 catches and we're circled on everyone's calendar. If a team doesn't already have a good defense, Watkins and Evans ain't taking you to the top.

The Lions' comparison is not a very good one. The reason the Lions have trouble finishing with a consistent record is because they have an inconsistent QB. If they had someone more consistent, they would dominate the NFC north.

But, to that point. Julio jones gets injured and the Falcons go from a potential 12-13 game winner to a 4 game winning team. So yes, receivers help rise you to the top.
