The first pick of the 2011 NFL draft wants to be a big part of the Charlotte community long-term just as badly as he wants to be a long-term part of the Panthers. That's why he didn't want to talk about the team officially exercising the fifth-year option on his contract on the same day he was promoting his school pride program.

He considers his commitment to being at Carolina for well beyond the 2015 season that the option guarantees just as much a given as his commitment to being an example for kids to get their education.

Newton has made no secret that he wants his relationship with the team and the city to be more than a pitstop on his way to something else. Those close to the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner say the fifth-year option, which guarantees Newton $14.67 million in 2015, won't ever come into play because the team will sign him to a long-term deal before that year is activated.

And here I thought Cam hated playing here, hated the way the team was run, hated the city, hated the fans and couldn't wait till his contract was up to get out of here.

I don't recall him saying all of that, KT had his moments, but there was truth to some of what he said.

 

Oh it's been more than one guy.

 

I'm sure you could count them on one hand.

 

On the flip side, how about the reactionaries who were ready to trade him just back in October?

The phrase "I won't blame Cam a bit when he leaves" has been quoted on here numerous times.

 

You should probably add context to that, but again, very low in numbers.

 

To go further on that comment, those who share that view are going to an extreme, but their frustration has been set in our organizations inability to adequately build around him on his side of the football. One offensive starter drafted since 2011, a WR corps gutted in a contract year.

 

What exactly is your point with this anyway?
