Who is the most important player on the panthers defense?

Smith vs Lucas

Recommended Posts

Or some people just think Luke is the most important.

If I could only keep one of them between Luke and Star I'm choosing Luke ten times out of ten.

That's cool but would you want luke to rack up a bunch of stats and still lose games? Or would you want like to be what he was last year. Star is the most important piece on defense because of this.

You can't really look at it like if we didn't have one or the other. Star gives us that extra push for all the pieces on defense. I wasn't trying to be a dick with that post, just that I look at it differently. But this will be my last post in this thread :-)

When star is actually in sure but he gets rotated a lot so it doesnt really make sense to say a player is the most important piece on defense when that player barely plays 60% of the total snaps

You must not know how forums work. This is a place where Panthers fans talk about various random topics. If you don't care then don't post...

The oldest question. One possible answer being. "I am going to show the world I am different, one "enter" key stroke at a time. While others postulate the underlying need for attention, gives way to opening one self up to ridicule. Me? It's all one big world out there.

It's gotta be Luke, but Star I felt really put us over the top last year.

Star was that missing piece so it seems. But yeah, Luke, on the field, is the man. TD, off the field, be the man. They all have an important part in making this D what it is. Trifeca.

It takes 11 guys and a good coach. Thomas Davis is the glue that holds them together. He's the heart of the D, so he gets my vote.

He be up there. Emotionally, probably true. On the field, it is Luke, and Star. Luke be captain, Star be tormentor.

If you want to evaluate who is most important just ask yourself who would we most miss when he isn't there.  If that is the criteria then Star immediately drops out because when he goes out we aren't as good but the drop isn't that noticeable given that Edwards,Short and Cole  can come in and hold the line.   Now lets look at what happens when Hardy goes out and one of the other DEs comes in.  Again we aren't as good but we don't exactly fall apart.  But if Luke goes out for ever a series what do we have to replace him and how much do we struggle?  That tells who is most important.  He is not replaceable at this point.  Davis is a big piece of the linebacking corps but he could be easier replaced than Luke.  And that folks is the simple definition of most important.  Who of the players would be the hardest to replace at this point if they went down and that guy is hands down Luke.  The only one close would be Davis.  Not Hardy or Star.

Without Star as a rookie, Kuechly led the NFL in tackles and won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. With Star, Kuechly won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in his second season.

My point is that with or without Star, Kuechly is an elite NFL MLB and he's the QB of our defense. Star is damn good, but there's probably 10+ guys in the league who could fill his role on our team. At most there's maybe 2 or 3 who could fill Kuechly's. He was the DPOY for a reason.

the question was who is the most important piece of our defense. Not who is the best overall defensive player. They are two different questions with two different answers.

Luke is one of the best MLB in the league, but without talent up front his impact can be contained.

Stars impact goes much further than helping Luke stay clear of blockers.

Stars impact is felt throughout the entire defense.

Makes the line better, the linebackers play better not getting blocked up, and helps the backend as our pass rush is more consistant and dominant.

You could argue that Luke had better stats as a rookie before Star was here. And that was after playing a good chunk of the season out of position at OLB. I say Luke is the most important because not only is he our best defensive player but he's also the QB of the defense. He gets everyone set pre-snap and calls all adjustments. I love Star, but if I had to choose between him and Luke I'd pick Luke with no hesitation.
