Panthers coach Dave Canales said rookie RB Jonathon Brooks (knee) may not be ready for the start of training camp. Canales also said Brooks has a ways to go before he is ready and the team will ease him into training camp. Brooks suffered a torn ACL late in his final season at Texas and is still recovering from the injury. Previous reports were optimistic that Brooks would be cleared by training camp, but Canales and the Panthers are now pumping the breaks. Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders are the next men up on Carolina’s depth chart. Hubbard proved far more effective than Sanders last year and would likely get the first crack at the starting gig if Brooks misses any time.

If you look at the scope of all the Panthers' moves this offseason, you'll notice that [Jadeveon] Clowney is the only player brought in from outside who is in his 30s, and he's coming off one of his best seasons and played a position of extreme need. The Panthers are not deep at corner, but they're not the same kind of shallow they were at outside linebacker. If Gilmore was 29, or even 31 again, this deal might already be done. But he's not. He doesn't have to run extremely well to play his game (when you run a receiver's route for him like he did on the 2021 interception at Atlanta, you need to be smarter than fast), but they do need someone who can move. He's a great player. This might not be as much of a fit as it was three years ago."

Tepper, in an effort to expand the potential of Bank of America Stadium as a multi-purpose venue, installed the turf surface last season. On Thursday night, PJ Walker sustained his ankle-sprain in the team’s Week 10 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He told reporters that he thinks it’s time for a change.

First, let’s address the Payton rumors. Based on conversations with multiple NFL executives and coaches, including several who have ties to Tepper, league insiders don’t see this as a fit. Many who know Payton well don’t believe he and Tepper would be a match, and the Carolina job comes with several red flags. There is no quarterback on the roster that coaches are eager to work with and no trove of 2023 draft picks. The Panthers have talent on defense, but the roster needs work. Tepper has no track record of winning, and the facilities aren’t special. Oh, and facing the New Orleans Saints twice a year would be a little awkward for Payton, who coached the franchise to its only Super Bowl title. The odds of Saints exec Mickey Loomis dealing Payton, who is under contract to the Saints through 2024, to a division rival are bleak. “That’s only an attractive job if you have a chance to get a quarterback,” one NFL general manager Another GM said: “Tepper isn’t afraid to throw money around, but this won’t happen. [Loomis] wants to trade [Payton] to an AFC team. One of the execs jokingly suggested the voter ranking the Panthers fifth must work for Carolina. "Baker Mayfield is the whole reason they are not in the cellar," this voter said. "But he is not the answer. They are still really going to struggle this year." The voter ranking Carolina fifth said he thought Mayfield, as a smaller quarterback, would fare better in the warmer, more hospitable NFC South than he fared in the colder, more rugged AFC North. "If they can keep (Christian) McCaffrey healthy, I think it is a pretty well-rounded team, and I think they can beat the teams in their division at home, and New Orleans/Atlanta on the road," the Carolina optimist said. There was not much support for the process Carolina has used in arriving at this point, but there is some thought the Panthers could be competitive with Mayfield replacing Sam Darnold. "I like Baker, and then they should have a good defense — they have three good corners, they have (Brian) Burns, they have (Derrick) Brown on the inside," a voter said. "That is what kept them in games last year. They do have weapons on offense, the line should be better, and who are they going to play in that division that is going to give them a run? Tampa is the only one, in my opinion."

Quarterbacks (3): Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, PJ Walker. It's reasonable to expect that the Panthers will clear a roster spot soon by putting Darnold on short-term IR (since head coach Matt Rhule said this week that Darnold would miss "at least four weeks" with a high ankle sprain). And until or unless they make a move (and Rhule didn't rule it out), that means they'll roll into the regular season with Mayfield and Walker as his backup. Running backs (3): Christian McCaffrey, D'Onta Foreman, Chuba Hubbard. This is a tight group, and they complement each other well. Of course McCaffrey's ability dictates that he get a lot of work, but Foreman had a good preseason, and gives them a bigger back who has proven to be effective in short-yardage situations.
