Was scared we would sign Reddick to a long contract/big contract based on his production in his contract year. But this? Essentially another prove it deal where he either proves it and stays, signs elsewhere for big money and nets us a comp pick, or sucks and is gone after a year? Perfect

First round picks are overrated Deshaun Watson is underrated Until you have a franchise QB, you're garbage. Get that, build from there in the 2nd-4th rounds, a good coach to develop guys, and sign FAs. People acting like our team is suddenly doomed because we don't have the 1 or 2 extra picks tossed into this trade as opposed to the picks we'd lose trading up for a rookie have lost their minds. If all else fails, copy the Saints cap wizardry and just sign whoever/whatever you want and need. We've literally seen entire drafts in this franchise where we came away with only 1 or 2 starters or even JAGs. Draft picks sound great...but proven players sound a lot better.

Who’s EXCITED!? Free agency starts today unofficially!!
CarolinaNCSU replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
With a prevailing thought being guys signing short deals to cash in when the cap goes up, that should be our pitch to Samuel. Hey, come on back for a year at a fair rate, go get rich next year. Where we'll then also have a better chance to pick between re-signing him and Robby. If Curtis can get paid this offseason though, go get your money. I'll happily take the 3rd round comp pick...unless we screw that up. -
Even if we overpay a bit this year, might be smart to do before the market on OT's gets reset next year once news of the cap jumping again breaks.
-
All things considered, shocking we've had the amount of "success" we did in 20 years when we were so obviously hamstrung in a lot of ways by the owner/GM/coaching choices.

Would make some sense. This year will be a purge due to Covid, then the big new TV money will hit in the next couple of years and contracts balloon again.

Chad Reuter’s mock has us taking Fields
CarolinaNCSU replied to JawnyBlaze's topic in Carolina Panthers
If Fields falls past ATL at 4, I feel like we HAVE to move to 5. Unless we like Lance and think he's at 8, 5 is the easiest trade up spot to swallow capital wise that may allow us to keep our 2nd. -
Much rather Brees come back and be a worse version of 2015 Peyton Manning than the Saints to back their way into Russell Wilson. Not to mention, more guys get cut to re-sign Brees who won't play for free? Sounds good

This. I'm not about to pretend I know dick about some 4th round OG from Ohio State...but I want them all. Throw enough crap at the wall until we get a great OL again.

1a and 1b are Watson and Lawrence on his rookie deal. If Lawrence is the real deal, he's the easy #1 answer. The safety of Watson being proven evens it out for now. Then Russell Wilson due to age & cost Zach Wilson & Sam Howell are great, but don't belong in the same convo as the other 3 right now
-
Been saying it, but Tepper will not be outbid IMO. Doesn't mean Watson is coming here, but for all the "we don't have the same capital" talk when it comes to the Jets and Dolphins...I don't think it matters. Tepper's hard-on is real, and if Deshaun becomes available no team is offering more than us. If Burns is the make or break piece for instance, I think Tepper will say meh, he's due a contract in a couple years anyway, bye. Which yes, is scary. But we have an owner who wants to drop his balls on the table in a franchise statement move, a GM coming from a team who traded 2 first rounders for a safety and isn't afraid to wheel and deal, and a coach who's known for coaching up lesser guys. It's a perfect storm where the thought process is probably hey, get a QB and we'll figure the rest out later.

Kiper Mock 2.0: Mac Jones to Panthers at #8.
CarolinaNCSU replied to Proudiddy's topic in Carolina Panthers
I mean, his BEST case scenario is Matt Ryan? I'd take prime Matt Ryan obviously, but theres like a 5% chance he's even that good? Would be about the most disappointing pick possible IMO. If QBs fly off the board, give me the #1 OT, WR, DE, DT, CB, whatever as opposed to the #5 QB.- 162 replies

If it's not done by the week of the draft, it ain't happening. If the deal involves Burns or Chinn, it (hopefully) ain't happening. I wouldn't expect anything to happen until AT LEAST early April if Houston plans on taking a QB this year in the draft. They'll scout/vet the prospects, talk, talk some more, decide. Expecting a Watson trade now, or in March, or even very early April isn't realistic.

You're mad we might throw our chips in the middle this year, but then it's okay the next year based on the hope we draft well this year? Then we trade in 2022 coming off a better record, and higher cost to get a rookie QB? The Chiefs went from 27 to 10 at the cost of an extra first rounder and 3rd. Imagine the cost if they would've had to get into the top 5 in a QB heavy draft like this one. This year, for us to go from 8 to 3...it might cost an extra first rounder and a 3rd? What's it matter if we do it this year or next? If we have a guy we like, go get him. In your same scenario ala Kansas City on a better team, we could still draft Darnold or Daniel Jones (at a higher cost) and lock our 9-7 team into mediocrity or worse. Whether this year or next year, the team is going to have holes. How many teams are "set", have drafted well for years, AND THEN go draft their QB like the Chiefs did? Not exactly a blueprint we can follow anyway when all we would have to do is draft one of the most talented QBs of all time that others pass on, sit him a year, and have him come in throwing no look TDs. The Chiefs are an outlier, not a plan.

Peter King on Panthers and Deshaun Watson
CarolinaNCSU replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Any trade that allows us to keep our defense, get rid of a couple of bad contracts, and a one year deal in Robby (who cares)...I'm listening. The deals where we give up Burns/Chinn/Brown are the offers I'd have to hang up on. That said, put it elsewhere...but I have a hard time imagining Tepper getting outbid. If the Texans make Watson available and ask for the moon, Tepper's hard-on may give them the moon. -
Mariotta is the name I've seen with New England. Cost wise, he may be the better gamble than Teddy. Teddy makes them respectable again, but they're not beating the Bills.

Three quarterbacks in the top four picks?
CarolinaNCSU replied to Mr. Scot's topic in 2023 NFL Draft
It's part of the reason I've never understood people willing to trade up in the draft at a cost of 2 firsts+ for a rookie, instead of 3 firsts+ for Watson. If you're swinging for the fence, take the sure thing at the higher cost and move on. Not landing Watson either causes us to panic trade to #3 for a guy we may not love, start another mediocre QB and we're in the same spot next year having to trade up, or we outright suck by starting Grier/PJ and go backwards. Knowing that, I don't think there's a team that will outbid us for Watson. Tepper has a hard on for him, Fitterer comes from Seattle where 2 firsts were tossed out for a safety...nobody is outbidding us if it comes to it IMO. -
Three quarterbacks in the top four picks?

The Washington game is the easy one to point to, but I'd like to forever curse Austin Ekler for dropping the wide open and game-winning lateral in the Chargers game. -

The Dolphins are in such a good spot. IF the Falcons want Fields, I honestly think they'll have to move to 3 to get him. The Dolphins could realistically drop from 3 to 4, while grabbing say a 3rd/4th rounder for their trouble of moving one spot. Then field calls from us, the Eagles, or whoever else for #4 if somebody wants Lance there. Grab even more picks for trading down just a couple more spots, and still get the top WR or whoever they want. Must be nice having the 3rd pick. -
FWIW, Shaq still follows the Panthers on Twitter. As well as a LONG list of OnlyFans girls, porn stars, and possible questionable ladies. Thanks for the follow ideas, Shaq!

We all love cap space, but there's no reason to get drunk on it just yet. Especially by kicking the can down the road and leaving ourselves with dead cap year after year after year. You restructure players you want to keep around a couple more years, or when you're desperate. We shouldn't be desperate since we're not a contender, and we sure as poo shouldn't want Teddy around any longer than he has to be.

At this point, don't think he can be counted on as anything more than hopeful depth. Whether that be OT or G even, pray he's not a complete waste of a pick and can be somebody's backup.
