Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss
rayzor replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Corrall is not Grier. No one ever talked seriously about him being a starter. There really was nothing in his play that would suggest that he would be anything more than a back up and the only reason he was selected was because Hurney liked his interview. No one else would have likely drafted him until in much later rounds, if at all. Meanwhile, Corrall has plenty of dynamic qualities that can translate into the pro game. Don't get hung up on this whole "he wasn't drafted until the third round" thing. The guy has legit potential as a starter and he's definitely worth giving him a shot. I've said this before, lumping him with Grier just because both were selected in the third is at best unfair and at worst lazy. Expectation is/was vastly different between the two, as is their talent, as is their potential. -

Obviously not meant to be taken seriously. -

The only way they get anyone else in that QB room is if they get rid of Sam, which they can't/won't do because of how much they've invested in him and that no one will take him. They are essentially stuck with him and that contract. They'll try to make the best of it and he'll help take the pressure off Corral to start right away. But we need to get away from this idea that they might bring another vet in or, even less likely, trade for someone. Baker ain't coming here. Neither is Jimmy G. The only other QB that might join the locker room is Cam and i don't even see that happening. And they aren't getting rid of PJ, either, mainly for sentimental reasons rhule has. -
Best thing he can do is just sit back and keep his mouth shut and let the rest of the coaches coach. Of course i'll say Snow should do the same. Just stay quiet and out of the way.

With Campen, he could be great depth and even a starter in a year or two.
-
Said it before, it was a win after getting Icky. Adding in Corrall it it solidifies it as an A+ draft. Didn't matter what we did after that.

I'll just say I've heard enough from Panthro to not doubt what he says. Now as far as Corrall vs. Willis vs. Pickett, it could be that the board was evolving and in flux throughout the process.
-
He should be. He holds no value other than sentimental with Rhule. He is a waste of roster space.
-
Just so any of you know, Panthro is one of those cats who would know. If he says it, it needs to be listened to because what he hears happens. It's not a lot of stuff he hears, but when he hears and he shares (which sometimes is just with the mods) it is spot on.

Cut Darnold... Sign Vet QB to be a Mentor... Start Corral from Day 1
rayzor replied to tukafan21's topic in Carolina Panthers
It would be good to give him a Derek Anderson type older brother like Cam had the benefit of, but that Darnold contract is an albatross around our necks. Maybe Cam could be that for Corrall. It would be nice. I just wish we didn't have Sammy and that contract. It just really fugs stuff up for us. -
I hope they do it and I hope they don't wait too long to get him in there. But build your offense around his traits, whether he's starting or not. You know the direction you want to go, so just build it.
-
I think they all know he's fool's gold by now. We were his last chance.
-
Corrall has a lot of very good traits that would be easy to build around and would produce some exciting football. He's a guy you HAVE to build your offense around, though, rather than a guy you could plop in any system and have them excel. And that's fine, because you should be able to and should be building the offense around the QB you are hoping to be your guy for years.

I'm hoping for Jojo Domann at this point. Could be fun to watch.

Getting those two guys gets them an A+ in my book. I was happy just getting either Icky or Neal and after that I considered it a success. Corrall was my favorite QB, but I never thought we'd be able to get him after going LT with the 6. I'm quite satisfied.
-
I expect it. What safeties are on the board?
-
I was kind of joking when I was giving @LinvilleGorge crap saying that Howell would be around when we picked in the 4th. Never thought he would stick around that long. Kind of shocked. Good luck with Rivera. Pretty crappy division so they might do ok with him.

Round 4 Pick 120: Brandon Smith, LB, Penn State
rayzor replied to Icege's topic in Carolina Panthers
Never heard of the guy but... Super athletic hard hitter from Penn St? Sure...I'm in. -
Smartest play at this point in the draft is to go BPA. First 2, maybe 3 rounds not so much but past the 3rd round you take what you can get hoping you find some good ball players.
-
Yes. We run the ball more so sure, why not? Plus, he's got lots of room for growth and has shown incredible capability for improvement in all facets. And it's not like he sucked at pass-pro. He did well and got better every year.
-
Gotcha. Yeah, he knows..... everyone knows that Sam is not the QB we want to build around. I guess it was worth a shot, but it was a long shot, especially considering the damage that had been done in NYJ. He's basically David Carr. Corrall definitely has potential and is coming from a good situation hopefully into a decent situation because of the improved OL and addition of MacAdoo. We'll see. He's got the tools needed to run a good offense. I think he'll do well enough.

There was nothing in Grier's play to assume he would ever amount to anything in the pros. All he cou look do was interview well, which was the only thing his drafting was based on. Corrall's play was definitely transferable to the pros. He's dynamic and did quite enough against better competition to show he could handle the NFL. Lots more to work with there than with Grier. Overall, just a lazy comparison.
