  1. i think i'm just more concerned about making sure that we have the best possible HC here than i am having an elite QB. having that coach takes a ton of pressure off making sure we've got some hopeful stud QB with the #1 or #2 pick.
  2. yes, that would be ideal, but what if you don't have both options available? what if the best choice available for a QB isn't a perennial all-pro, but can be a pretty solid starter...but the HC is a top tier guy? would that be better than getting that all-pro caliber QB but having a coach who is just ok at stuff? which would you rather have or would get the team further? a great HC or a great QB?
  3. lol all this discussion about "would a HC pass up a bad team" isn't answering the question in the OP. it doesn't matter just how realistic you might think the scenario is. what is more important for the franchise, not the coaching prospect, the franchise...getting the right HC or getting the best prospective QB?
  4. payton is a good relevant example. he's not going to go to any team with an opening because some situations and cultures are much more difficult than others. you've got to think that up and coming HCs will have some teams/situations that would be a preference and some that they would really rather not get sucked into, and only would if there were a lack of opportunities or too much money to pass up. it's quite possible that some might just look at the openings available to them and decide they'd rather wait until next year.
  5. do they want the worst situation or not the worst situation? not all bad teams are equally bad.
  6. i'm just curious and it's just a hypothetical. for example, if steichen is the guy that everyone wants and he has a choice of several teams, would he want a team that needs a total rebuild but has the first overall or a team that is just a few pieces and good leadership away from being competitive, but didn't have a top 5 pick. which would be more appealing?
  7. what if, by tanking, you make the team look like a less desirable situation for the best available HC candidate? is it more important to get the right QB or the right HC? yeah, i know you can get both and money will be a big draw, but forced to choose, which would you say is more important for the future of the franchise? QB or HC?
  8. we can get by with a lesser QB and a better HC than we can a lesser HC and a better QB. if Steichen is as good as it appears, it will take a lot of pressure off trying to find the best QB for the team. i'd trust his judgment on the pick, but i'd trust more the work he does with whatever QB he has. the better situation we can make the team look for him, the better the chances of getting him, imo. if he's a hot commodity like it appears he's going to be, the team needs to look like it can compete with just a bit of his tweaking and an improvement at QB. the more competitive we look, the better this team looks for a prospective HC. draft position is important, but i'd trust him to be able to make sure we've got one that he can work with outside of the first couple high ranked QBs....just in case we miss out on them for whatever reason.
  9. we need a good QB. more than that, we need good coaching. i really hope we can pull off getting both in the offseason.
  10. The 2nd pick of the draft....the first QB taken, Mitch Trubisky or however you spell his name. Then there's Desean Watson who was taken two picks after Mahomes who is one of the most talented QBs in the league (but also apparently a horrible human).
  11. To me he was. I had no doubt he was exactly what this franchise needed on many levels and I knew it just from watching the Iron Bowl. There wasn't another QB I wanted in that draft. There wasn't another pick I was going to be happy with. It was Cam or the draft was going to be a failure and the #1 pick a waste. I have no feeling like that about anyone in this draft, btw. I like Young and Stroud, but I don't have the confidence in them I had in Cam.
  12. Copy/paste from another thread because this was the one I thought I was posting in. Oh well.
  13. I do think that we are set up nicely for a QB to succeed. The OL is the biggest issue....aside from coaching anyways. We've got a WR corps that is young and has a lot of potential (imo). We've got a workhorse RB if we can keep him another year or two for cheap. But the OL is what I think we needed most personnel-wise. Lock up Bozeman. Get a good TE from draft and/or FA (we should have two good receiving TEs). And then we're set. Defense is set up for some success, but it would be great to get a good powerful answer opposite Burns and/or a big beefy powerful DT beside Brown. And again, I don't think it's ultimately really going to matter where in the first we get our QB in the first as long as we get one with a legit first round grade. Meaning more that we shouldn't stress out if we're in danger of missing out on Young or Stroud. They'll still be a couple good options available, imo. The #1 thing we need, though, is a good HC who can find a QB that fits what he wants to do or, better yet, take the best available QB and make it work with him. If we get a good HC, I think everything else will fall into place.... whether or not we draft Stroud or Young or any QB with a top 5 pick.
  14. How many were taken with the top pick vs later on? If you don't get the top pick, it doesn't se lem to matter where you get your QB in the first. And then compare that list with the total number of QBs picked with that first overall pick and also all picked anywhere in the first round. There is no guarantee that you'll get that franchise guy with the first overall or at any point in the first. Basically it doesn't matter where you get the QB in the first round. It's going to be a crapshoot. Just be ready for it. And in no way am I saying that we shouldn't get a QB in the first. We should. But I think if we don't get that first overall pick, draft BPA and then trade back into the first and get your QB. It's a risk, but hell...just drafting a QB anywhere in the first is a gamble.
  15. best point i've seen him make in a while. just something to consider. i really want us to get a QB in the first round next year...but we have to keep remembering that no first round QB is ever a sure thing, which is especially important to remember in the first few picks. go for the sure(st) thing in the draft with the early pick and then use those picks from CMC's trade to come back in and pick up another QB if we like one that is still around.
  16. i've just got this feeling that we're no more or less guaranteed to get a good starter no matter where we draft out of the first round. no better odds anywhere in the first considering what has happened in the past. still think that as much as i would like to have either young or stroud, they are just as likely to bust or succeed as anyone else. would like for us to get one of the top DL prospects with our first pick and then come back in and take a shot on one of the other QB prospects in the first. what that means for this season is we just try to ball out and win as much as possible just to make it interesting and to give the guys something kind of positive to build on and to make this team more attractive to a potential head coach. if we just totally blow it or lay down the rest of the season, that's just not going to be a good enticement for a prospective head coach. if they see a team that has some talent and fight in it, they might feel good about what they've got to build on. i just don' think there's much need or incentive to tank. i mean if we lose out, we lose out. but don't do it intentionally.
  17. Yeah, he's not in the same category of Baker or Sammy. He's not a failed project. He's a good QB with a good head on his shoulders and a good leader on a consistently bad team with a horrible culture.
  18. I really like him and wish he were in a better situation. I don't want a retread except maybe as a bridge to developing a draft pick. He'd be my favorite among them. I don't want us to pick him up with the idea he's our long term starter. But if we were going to go that route again, he'd be one of just a couple I'd be somewhat ok with
  19. Listen to the ones playing the game. Listen to the ones whose health and livelihoods depend on the ground they run on. Find players who think turf is better and listen to what they say and listen to players who think grass is better and compare notes. My guess is you aren't going to find many who think turf is better.
  20. I can honestly say I don't really care at this point who is starting. It's going to be so up and down no matter who is slinging the ball, results won't be much different than they are now. I'm much more interested in who is the QB next year and I don't want it to be PJ, Sammy, or Baker. I'm done with all of them. I've seen everything I want to see and I don't want to see anymore.
