so i googled eich and fangio because i was a little bored and i found this fun little read from a few years back... https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2019/10/25/vic-fangio-says-frank-reichs-owed-him-dinner-since-his-carolina-days/4074869002/ the two have a good relationship going back even to that inaugural year and a solid respect for each other as coaches. i'm hoping that Fangio looks at a chance to coach with Reich as something that is too hard to pass up and that Tepper throws enough money at him to make it impossible to pass up.

yeah i'm thinking that carr will be a FA and that if we do go FA, that it will be Carr. Hopefully that will only be the case if we don't get a QB in the first round.
-
Agreed. I really hope he gets a job somewhere. That team would be lucky to have him. You give him a f*cked up situation and he'll have that team turned around quickly. I think he would do really well with the texans or even denver. i'd love to see what Wilks could do with Wilson in Denver. Seems like Wilson needs someone like Wilks to get his head straight.
-
much love and respect for the guy. much thanks for getting the team's attitude and personality back to where it was supposed to be. Reich has a great foundation to build on because Wilks restored it after Rhule had demolished it.
-
i wonder if he got asked to interview anywhere and turned them down because he thought it was panthers or nothing? or maybe other teams thought that he was good to go here?
-
i would not hate that at all.

who knew that having someone with experience mattered?
-
agreed. if it wasn't for the fact that we have a very experienced and successful OC who is now HC, i'd be nervous. it wouldn't be a position coach who was handed the reigns of an offense completely like it was with Joe Brady. It would be a new OC without experience designing a scheme and calling plays teamed up with a very experienced and successful partner and mentor. it kind of reminds me of when rivera got mcdermott as his DC and gave him guidance along the way, only i see reich as coming in a lot more accomplished and ready for the job than rivera was. at any rate, the duo of reich with any young up and coming OC is ok with me. and then you bring in fangio?

Panthers Let the Great Be the Enemy of the Good.

if that happens i imagine there would be a lot of panicking and "i told you so"s going on but the season isn't over after 2 games. the thing i like is that there isn't going to be a learning curve like there would be with a new HC. we know he knows the game and we know he knows how to run a winning team. we know he knows how to take a team with a less than ideal QB situation and turn it into a team that wins much more than it loses. i would have felt good about wilks getting the full time gig, but i feel better about reich getting it because of him being an offensive minded coach with a track record of success. i think both wilks and reich were safe bets because of their experience as a head coach. both were safe bets meaning that you could feel good that they would succeed in making us a competitive and winning team. i think both would have produced a winning team. with the league heavily favoring offense and the QB position being the most important one on any team, it makes sense to have not just an offensive minded coach, but one with experience as a QB. i know for us it's essential because since Cam's demise and exit (x2) that is where we've had the most problems. I think that if getting the QB situation right wasn't such an issue for us, wilks probably would have been the guy. but our needs, as they are, and the high priority of those needs...reich was the choice that made the most sense for us. -
he brought us back to where we were supposed to be as far as identity. he corrected the damage done by rhule and he gave this team a good foundation for success. i feel good about what he did here and i really hope he gets a job with an organization that isn't fixated on fixing an offense. We went the direction we needed to go as a team. We were set on getting an offensive minded coach with experience as a winning pro level coach. we needed to go a different direction than we have in the past. so basically it was just a matter of not being an ideal situation for giving Wilks the full time gig here. if he were to land a job somewhere else, which he absolutely should, i guarantee you they will be a competitive fighting team who keeps winning. he's definitely good...he just wasn't the direction we needed to go.

Panthers Let the Great Be the Enemy of the Good.

preach. the thing that i hated most about john fox was that his goal was to be better than average. probably most remember him saying that his goal was to win 3 out of 4 games. sure, that leads you to a winning record and, at the time a 12-4 record, which is very nice, but the thing that pissed most of us off was that there wasn't this push for excellence. we were ok with losing a few...and we got really good at consistently losing a few. most of the time, people will almost reach their goals. they will hit just under it, no matter what it is. i'm of the persuasion that the higher you set your goals, you'll achieve more than if you had set your goals lower. 3 out of 4 is good. we've been good before and we've constantly had to settle for less than great. it's time to try and be great. swing for the fences with a QB. swing for the fences with a head coach. sure, we might fail but i would rather fail at being great than settle for just good enough. -
I want nothing to do with Mike McCoy. Also do not want gus Bradley.

i'm totally fine with this hire. no excited yet, but i will be. finally we've got an offensive HC. been a long time coming.

Coaching Interview Thread IV: A New Hope

agreed with this. it's a nice thought, but there would be too many issues involved. wilks won't take a back seat here nor should he and if he did, there would likely be a bit of resentment and behind the back talking among the team. and if reich were to take a back seat, wilks could never get comfortable because that's pretty much the situation we were in when wilks came in. wilks has played that game before, just on the other side of the equation. it just would have too much static involved either way. -
who was his QB during that time?
-
his "failures" in indy were still better than most of the seasons in our franchise's history. it wasn't until the owner started meddling in an effort to give him a chance to hire his buddy the HC job that reich started actually losing. if reich was handicapped at all in indy, it was by irsay.

Frank Reich may spurn Chargers for mediocre head coaching job this might be a bit biased of a writeup from a chargers fan page. Frank Reich might be better off being the offensive coordinator of the LA Chargers.

Coaching Interview Thread IV: A New Hope
rayzor replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
i think any of the people we've got lined up for 2nd interviews are an upgrade over the past couple HCs. get wilks teamed up with a good OC and he's definitely better than rivera. i see wilks as the floor for this group of prospects and by that i mean no disrespect because i think he's still a few notches above rhule for sure and i think with him we're competitive. keeln moore is a wildcard for me. i really don't know what to expect. i mean he doesn't look like he's even old enough to shave, but he's got a lot of experience as OC...more than most of the other guys we were looking at, but just how easy would it be for the rest of the team to line up behind him willingly? wilks has the players. reich would win them over easily. i just kind of like the idea of having a guy that doesn't need a learning curve as a HC and if that guy is an offensive guy with a good bit of success, especially in less than ideal situations, then bring him in. -
thanks for this write up. i'll just say that if we hire reich, i won't be disappointed.

true. and it's really been a mixed bag from what i'm seeing some have levis going to the colts early ahead of stroud or young and some have levis the 4th or 5th QB behind richardson and some other QB (saw him behind cameron ward on yahoo).
-
I think the raiders get Brady or some other vet. probably brady, though. and i think that atlanta is more likely to go after a vet and give ridder some time to learn. they've got too many issues on defense they need to address to take a QB that early. i just don't see it being the hot priority from them that it is for us. my thinking is connected to another post in this thread where i think that seattle and detroit stick with the guys that started for them this year and vegs and atlanta and a few other teams go after vets. there's going to be a lot of holes and a lot of FA QBs getting shuffled around to fill those holes.
-
the thing is colts might get excited about levis and overestimate his appeal to other teams. it's quite possible that one of young or stroud makes it to us. but i also think that even if anthony richardson is our pick, that if we've got someone like steichen or kafka that they would be great in helping him get to the pro level.
