Let's say Icky is the starting LT and Brady LG. Bozeman at C, Corbett at RG and Moton at LT. That leaves you Brady and then Erving as back up tackles. Elfein and then, Cade and Brown as back up Guards. Elfein and then Cade as back up center. 9 man crew when it's usually 10 opens up another slot. That should be a top 15 in the league if the gel and stay healthy.

Next round of contract extensions are no joke
musicman replied to TheCasillas's topic in Carolina Panthers
If we can run and keep the ball longer (even score more) I expect the defense to be better, even without Reddick -
If Brady becomes the best as the #1 back up for every position, is that a bad thing? If he becomes that good. That means maybe we only need 8 OL instead of 10 dressed per game. Like in Basketball, the 6th guy is extremely important. Or he wins the starting LG position and still is the #1 back up to the other spots. Not bad to know what he can do. If (and should) win the starting LT, Brady is the #1 back up to that spot, which is a good thing.

IMO it takes time to learn an entirely new process and league. Throw in Covid 2 months after he got the job it took longer and was harder to learn. He had Hurney the first year. IMO injuries and some rough decisions derailed 2021. But between Tepper, Rhule, Fritterer and Morgan, they are figuring it out and appear to be better and more comfortable. It takes time. I was a successful DJ in the private event world and got the job to be an NFL DJ, it was completely different process, system and language. The first 2 years I was OK, and struggled, but they saw something in me to stay with it. I became one of the better DJs in the NFL (my ratings from in game NFL personal, to the NFL asking us for music we play during parts of the game, etc). It was electric in the stadium, especially from 2013 to about 2017/18. It took time. Maybe Rhule just needed time and Tepper, who's a very smart businessman needed some time too. But I see the foundation and changes they're talking about and it's not easy to get there, especially when everybody critiques every move. There are gonna be mistakes along the way. Let see how this year and next year play out. We weren't going to win the SB in 2022 and Tepper said he always wanted to build a consistent winner that's in the playoffs every year with a chance to win it all some times.

While I agree with the post, a lot had to do with no CMC and not a good OL. We just didn't have the horses to do that last year, especially when they fired Brady.
-
What's cool is moving Brady to LG leaves him as the best option to back up Icky at LT. That's not bad. Just need another swing T as the 2nd back up.

When Tepper explained what went wrong last year, he was saying there was "extenuating circumstances". CMC, Horn and other injuries. Even Sam stepped up after a few games in the game he got hurt. Dallas exposed our weaknesses. Cam didn't have a chance as it was all emotion at that point and that wasn't enough. The only big thing I believe Rhule did wrong, he admitted, not using BC at LT sooner (or the way they brought him along). I even think Erving has the skills to be a good LT, maybe he wasn't coached up. And I think OC Brady didn't help us. He was auditioning for a HC job, not trying to build the Panthers. He should have at least 4 years as long as we don't tank in 2022. 8 or 9 wins and progress is all I need. I want 10 wins and a wild card.

What stands out is the twitch, the quick shoulder fake, change direction and throw. That's a Tom Brady quality. He redirects the coverage away from where he wants to go. That's big league and if Sam learned that, would have been much better. I see (and hope) for a future Russell Wilson. Both 3rd round picks!
-
Just had the round wrong.

Having Brady as a G and back up T is the best route. Draft a LT. Erving goes from starter to 3rd on the depth chart is a good move.

Barring major injuries, we are not picking in the top 10 next year. Maybe mid round, even with Sam if we get a LT and stay healthy. So, having a Malik or good QB to sit the year, or at least a 1/2 year is a benefit to Rhule this year. If he's not here next year, he don't care about losing an early pick in 2023. I'm just saying we walk away with a top LT and still get a QB later in the 1st or early 2nd, they win the PR move and improve the team. Better would be trading for Jimmy G or Baker and not trading the pick but after Teddy and Sam, I think they don't want a re-thread again. I'm NOT saying I want them to trade next years pick, I just think that could happen.
-
Trade next years 1st round pick to be get back in to this years 1st round.. IF... QB Malik is still available late in the round. Probably give up a 5th this year and a 3rd next year to get it. Then all positions of real need have been addresses. Then sign a decent DE/DL still available.
-
Both QBs will get their money. But each with a new team it might help defuse the bad mojo with their current teams. That's all I'm saying. And they can both be FAs next year.

I would take an even trade - Darnold for Mayfield. Darnold gets to back up Watson and they don't have to carry the baggage of a keeping him. Nobody will trade a pick for him. Why not? Not sold on Mayfield but he'll have something to prove.

ELLIS L. WILLIAMS Of the OBSERVER on Jimmy G
musicman replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
I hope they take LT so if it's Jimmy G and Sam battling for the starting job, I'm OK with that. -
the safe pick is LT. If they take a chance on a QB at 6 and it doesn't work, it would set the team back even further. If they take a solid LT, even dropping a couple of slots and get one, they are primed for a QB pick, trade or signing next year to put them over the hump and into the playoffs. That O-line would even make Sam look good this year.

Cost of trading for an additional 1st rounder
musicman replied to Martin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I like this idea. We would have a good team going into next year anyway if this all works out. -
Remember when the Giants drafted Erik Flowers, the huge LT. He became an average guard. I would take Cross and the blind side pass rush is more important then the run game from a LT (IMO). Maybe Neal was better because of his size in college and not pure talent (like Flowers).

PFF's Sam Monson on Panthers free agency
musicman replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
What happens if they still get another solid O-lineman (draft or FA) and with all those weapons, Darnold plays decent as a game manager, along with that defense, and wins 10 games? Would you be mad? -
Watson was not on the same level as R Wilson. Wilson has a SB and a clean image. I can see no players added to the offer.
-
With what money will both teams not be in cap hell this year or soon? Saints may have a better roster but they don't have the coach that put it all together. All has been a mess for years and don't have many good players and giving away picks too. Even though Carmichael called the plays for the Saints, the coach is what drove that team. They'll be good but when will their cap problems come to life?
-
Don't get DW4, draft a LT at 6 or drop down and pick up the Center (Lindenum?)Trade Robbie and get a 3rd or 4th. Sign Mariotta to compete with Sam. Sign Djax. Draft another O-line and D-line guy and lets role. We are NOT winning a SB in 2022 so build for 2023. Draft or sign your QB then. If we show real progress, maybe 9-10 wins (which I hope for), roll with Rhule one more year. If not, you've got a solid good young team, new HC and QB.
-
I'm of the mindset you get Mariotta to compete with Darnold and build a solid team and draft or sign someone next year (after Brady is gone). The cap money we'll have next year would be much better too.

The Panthers have a lot of leaks coming from our staff
musicman replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
Just like last year with SF, everybody thought they were taking Jones or Fields with the #3 pick. They then admitted it was perfect letting the speculation take over from what they wanted. Same thing here. I believe it's a smoke screen and we are not taking Watson. The quieter they are and the more people put out about us getting Watson makes me believe that it's not happening. The Eagles are the only team that can afford it and I wouldn't doubt it we then traded for Jalen Hurts (as he won't stay there with Watson).
