The contract is written like a 3 year contract, loading all of the money into a short spurt. Long term deals gives you more flexibility. Also, don't be shocked if Watson becomes the first QB to take a standardized contract. (Which will become the new norm for QBs in years to come) Aaron Rodgers was very close to being the first QB to sign one in this last extension. We would still have the rest of the draft to pick players. We are giving up a first round pick, not our entire capital. We still would be able to draft 6+ players each draft. You are acting like team's have never been in this situation before. GMs are licking their chops for this kind of opportunity. Superstar QB and build a franchise around him. We already have milestone players in impact positions.

There would not still be that 40.4 million dollar cap figure. The Panthers literally could front load his entire contract to 2021 if they wanted to and build for years to come. The way watson's contract is currently written is a big fug you to the texans. It's a bad contract. Even when it was occurring many sports outlets were saying the contract was a desperate attempt for the Texans to keep him. Whoever his new team is, they are going to throw that thing out and turn it into a long term deal that is manageable for the franchise. The current contract is way too risky, and no one will trade all these assets without revising the entire contract.

This is very true. However, a couple things come to play when making this decision as a team trading a player away: 1. Will this impact the texans chance of getting back into the playoffs if watson is in their conference? (ie would this make the jets competitive for years to come, therefore eliminating a playoff spot for the texans to grab for the next 5-7 years) 2. Does the team who receives Watson cause their first round pick to de-value based on their division competition? (ie. Dolphins would most likely become AFC east favorites with Watson, therefore their 1st round picks in the future would equate to late round picks) 3. Is the team on the no-trade clause list?

Here is a list of teams in the 2020 draft WHO DID NOT HAVE A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK: 1. Bills 2. Steelers 3. Colts 4. Rams 5. Bears 4 out of 5 teams who made bold moves to get the player they wanted by offering a first round pick..... had winning seasons and ended up in the playoffs. You see a player worth the risk, you take the risk.

The salary cap would be wide open, especially after this year. And as I posted in another message on this thread, we wouldnt keep Watson at the current contract, we'd extend. Every single team who would trade for watson would do this. Pending on what players were dealt in this deal, we could create a massive cap gap. Also, the cap opens up extremely after this year.

Any team that makes this trade, turns his remaining contract into a long term deal. The reason he didnt sign a long term deal with the Texans is because he didnt want to stay there if they didnt prove things were changing. His current is purely a watson friendly deal to keep him in HOU. Now that he would be leaving, that new team (should be smart here) and re-write the deal in form of an extension.
