Any pass rusher is going to benefit from a bookend, but Burns has never been one to fight through double teams or command triple teams. I could be full of crap there but AFAIK that’s the case. If you make a big investment in Burns do you now have to give him a FA or #33 pass rusher to keep him effective? The answer probably feels obvious to some but I just felt like throwing that out there.

Without getting into the sunk cost fallacy, the team invested too much in Bryce to not make this season all about him. Give him the best chance to succeed so we can move forward. If he blows then we are in a better spot for a new QB or vet to take over.

Getting Crunch Time for the Panthers and Brian Burns
Donald LaFell replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’d rather trade him because just like CMC he’s not going to put us over the top. He needs to be next to other talented players. If we overpay for him I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world, at least he’ll have the security but he’s just too in between to be an elite edge. Maybe front load his contract and hope we can extend him for cheaper if/when a SB window opens up and he’s failed to be impactful. -
Breaking Down the Shrewed moves that Built the Carolina Panthers
Donald LaFell replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
I hate to be apathetic but I’m just unsure of how much of a difference it would have made. If you read bears fans posts some of them don’t even care that they have the #1 pick since they just think they’ll screw up anyway lol -
Yeah I’m always open to new approaches but holy poo. This seems like a whole lot of trouble vs the eye test. I hope we keep trying new things but why are we going all in on it? I feel like analytics makes more sense about what positions to prioritize, how to spend cap, maybe how to harness a Super Bowl window. I can’t see how analytics can help that much with talent eval. The data sets aren’t large enough and football is pure chaos. This is all so silly lol.

When we win the Super Bowl we’ll rub it in his face, and if we suck again then Teppee with throw scotch at him. Win/win!

CBS will air the Super Bowl in 4K (but there's a catch)
Donald LaFell replied to PanthersATL's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah back in the day 1080p over bunny ears looked incredible vs whatever cable was. I recorded all of our games on windows media center. I think they were about 28gb for 3 hours back then. might be kind of a cool hobby to try again. Rewatching the games wouldn’t be as fun during this era lol. -
Rhule: "I wanted to draft Brock Purdy"
Donald LaFell replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
lol you don’t say that even if it’s true you doofus. All of the GOAT orgs prob wanted to draft some real stinkers too. That’s just how it works. Also if you gave us the top 10 picks in the draft he would have ruined it -
I wouldn’t expect anything different. Glad they are both friends and have been able to ascend to some of the highest levels of football together. Nothing in the past matters though, draft position or college tape. Stroud is much better which is why he’s having to defend Young. Let’s hope Young gets better but this offseason is going to be agonizing with all the “coach speak” about how much better he can be. It’s so much more likely that he’s going to fail.
-
You can’t not play as long as he did and not have something to offer. He’s never said anything dumb. I’d like to think he help guys find their pride/confidence. Working back from those injuries was such an impressive feat. He even got Jeremy Chinned his first year but still was able to contribute. We had such good fortune with those 4-3 linebackers it’s been incredible. Almost two decades of having someone that was near the top in terms of talent, usually felt like at least 2 guys.
-
True which is why I’d rather focus on it. I’m not sure if Young will really ever rip it the way he needs to even with time.
-
I don’t think I’d mind but Young seems like really needs the o-line first.

Personnel moves to win NFC South
Donald LaFell replied to Ghostofdelhomme's topic in Carolina Panthers
Resign and restructure the core group. Focus on supporting the QB position, don’t fit too much in one offseason or we’ll keep sucking. -
And it’s been so tragic because the low expectations were right there. They literally took the rope and hung themselves.
-
A year like 2002 or 2011 had some bright spots and I’m hoping for something like that. Seeing young players flash and build chemistry together.
-
I definitely don’t want rookie or unproven WRs considering a new offense and shaky QB. Young needs stability and talent so FA WR seems like a good idea but we also need to stabilize the O-line. TBH I’m pretty sure Young isn’t going to work out so making long term moves for him seems pointless. Give him enough for a fair shake and cut bait when he proves he’s not a franchise QB. But truthfully the team needs to be torn down. Keep your foundational guys and just be patient.

It felt like a risk to draft an NFL player with so many physical disadvantages. I hope with never do this again. It’s just nonstop questions wonder if he can even be average. This was such an impulsive gamble for a prospect that isn’t generationally talented or even the clear cut #1

Hopefully it’s more and more true

Why carolina can not* afford to lose Burns
Donald LaFell replied to micnificent28's topic in Carolina Panthers
We likely wouldn’t replace him for a while. We’d get players on offense. Burns is the kind of player that would make a great defense elite but he can’t be an anchor. He needs to go somewhere where he can be a pass rush specialist that is ok against the run. Trade him for what you can get or let him test the market. -
I wouldn’t be opposed. Availability is a big deal. Love him as a player but maybe his body can’t handle the NFL. Not to mention he’s probably be training for this his whole life. Maybe his body was overworked as an adolescent or teenager. Just thinking out loud.

Did the panthers lose on the CMC trade?

Good players leaving dysfunctional teams is always a win/win -
Rivera's advice for Caneles
Donald LaFell replied to blueandblackattack's topic in Carolina Panthers
Good idea. I think Tepper appoints him as director of clock management reporting directly to him lol -
I definitely agree. I don’t want to be apathetic but I hope we can just not swing for the fences this offseason but also get better? Maybe try to help Young too? For a new coach maybe we can go heavy on short term vet FAs he likes then focus on O line in the draft. I agree we are probably wasting time but I just feel like 2 years is always the plan with a rookie QB like that. Young is very mature/smart and no doubt a hard worker so I assume they’ll try to keep investing in him for this built in wasted year. I totally agree though I would love if they decided a 5’10” gun-shy QB probably won’t work out and move on. I can’t wait to have a tall strong armed QB again. I feel for Young but I hope he can hold his head high regardless.
