  1. The NFL has provided plenty of examples of quick turn arounds and a few teams surprise every year.  Nothing wrong with believing we could be one of those teams this year.

There’s enough talent on the team to compete.  How well the coaching staff extracts that talent and how quickly our young players progress will have a lot of influence on how the season progresses.

Theory crafting wins/losses is an exercise in futility.  Even with perfect logic the better team often loses in the NFL.

I simply hope we see a team improving with each game this season.  That’s the standard I’d like to see from a new staff and our rookie QB.  Just continue to improve, converting experience into progress.

The Saints and Falcons are better then last season.....don't know about Carolina. We may be the 3rd best team in the division.

Carr looked surgical against KC.  The entire offense was operating at a very high level for a preseason opener.

  3. Historically, any #1 pick is a gamble.  It's just such as a huge investment with such high expectations.  The busts are really visible.

Just a few #1 busts in recent memory.  2007 Jamarcus Russell, 2010 Sam Bradford, 2015 Jameis Winston.  Wouldn't call 2016 Jared Goff a bust, but he's already on his second team.

Point being, all these #1's had better physical attributes than Bryce and still busted.  Bryce is a gamble, but literally so is everyone else.

Far as the players you listed, yes they are considered small but you are still overlooking the fact that Bryce is even smaller than all those guys so technically he is still a outlier all of his own and will have to do something never been done before for a player like him. Thats all.

How am I overlooking it, my second sentence is literally stating that he is smaller, I even use the phrasing "technically correct" to assess your take.

Otherwise, I don't disagree with you.  Just gonna have some faith, if the staff can't get this pick right then there may be little hope they would have succeeded with anyone else.

The data also says a QB at 5'10 and barely weights 190 pounds is pretty much guaranteed not to be a success because its literally never been done but we are not gonna run with that now are we??

So if you want to split hairs then I have a few reasonable responses.  Bryce may come in a bit smaller than these guys, making your statement technically true.  However, the spirit of your argument is that small is pretty much a guaranteed bust and that certainly isn't true.  These players span the history of the game as it's evolved, clearly it's possible to get it done quite successfully even if you're smaller than average.

    Drew Brees 6' 200lb.

    Russel Wilson 5'11" 215lb.

    Joe Theismann 6' 192lb

    Len Dawson 6' 190lb.

    Fran Tarkenton 6' 190lb.

    Sonny Jurgensen 5'11" 202lb.

  6. Fitt's job is to put together the roster Reich says he needs to compete.  I'm pretty confident Reich will decide who's on the field and when.  Not saying these guys don't collaborate, but it doesn't feel like this coaching staff will leave the better player on the bench.  Everything the Panthers have done screams they want to compete now and beyond.

The length of Cam Newton's career vs the length of Tom Brady's career reinforces the notion that being bigger isn't everything.

And that's what's been said with regard to Young. Hell, I've pointed out myself before that mobility isn't the best defense against getting hit. Fast processing is. Lord knows Young has that.

Inevitably though, he is going to be hit. That's where I cringe.

Just have to hope he's both smart enough and durable enough to minimize the damage. Lord knows he'll have a coaching staff that can help him in that area.

You and I have reconciled to complete agreement.

I grant that everybody has durability concerns, but at the same time could you honestly say you'd be more worried about Terrell Owens taking a hit than you would Tutu Atwell?

And yes, all defenses are going to try to hit the quarterback. But again, hitting Bryce Young isn't quite the same as hitting Cam Newton.

Plus you have to figure the dirty ones are gonna go a little harder.

Sure, that all seems like 2+2 but it can the other way as well.  Large bodies tend to wear out faster which is also 2+2.

And to dive into a little more nuance....beyond build, luck and genes what else can extend a career in a physically punishing sport like the NFL?  The ability to protect yourself, know the situation and play another down.  I'd argue it's also 2+2 that physical specimens are more likely to stick their nose in it and pay a price.  I'd expect Bryce to very good at protecting himself.  Honestly, this is one big reason Brady's career was so long and successful, dude knew when to get down or throw it away.

I've been a Stroud proponent, which is funny because when it comes to quarterbacks, I'm normally a guy who cares less about measurables and more about intangibles.

Young is absolutely everything that I would want a quarterback to be. He's smart, he processes well, he's an accurate passer, all the most important stuff.

But yes, I worry about his durability. Especially so because you know other teams are going to try to hit him as hard as possible. And I think you can get pretty close to Young's intangibles with Stroud while not having the durability concerns.

Ultimately though, I think Young will be the guy so I just have to commit to cringing and covering my eyes when he takes a hit 😖

How can you say without durability concerns?  I enjoy your insights but that's just using conjecture to support Stroud.  This is the NFL, anyone can get destroyed on any play.

Also are you suggesting that NFL teams try to hit small quarterbacks harder than they hit big ones.

Just going by the things they've said and done leading up to this point. Everyone is basing their opinions on the fact that Young is the odds on favorite according to media projections. Past experience says the media is almost always wrong with these things. The Huddle concensus is always wrong as well. In reality there is not much difference in a few of these guys as far as ability. Young has more tape and better coaching with more college success on his resume.  Maybe I'm more worried that it won't be him and that's why I'm not buying it until the name is called.  I'm just not ready to say it's Young just because all the questions they get are about Young.

Vegas has Bryce at -1200 and Stroud at +800.  I agree, it's not a lock until the name is called, but these betting odds suggest it's a lock.
