There's a little more to unpack than just the obvious. Here are a few considerations. First, Chicago has played 9 games and half the league has only played 8. So they have an extra game worth of yardage to consider there. If you pivot to per game averages to account for this they move up to 28th in pass defense. However, if you look a little closer at that 28th ranking you'll find their season is really a tale of two halves so far. The first 5 games they gave up 286 on average which would be dead last in the league. Their most recent 4 games they've only averaged 220 allowed, which would be good for 15th ranked pass defense. It's probably most fair to say that Chicago's pass defense is a bit unpredictable. They held Cousins to 174 yards just a few weeks ago in their best showing and gave up 359 to Howell in their worst showing.

All you Bryce apologists are scared to death of Dalton getting another start. Frankly, haha frankly, the coaching staff is too.

Even though the Panthers rank poorly in nearly every offensive category they'll face an equally challenged Chicago defense that ranks 28th in both passing and scoring defense. Couple this with the lowest sack rate in the NFL at 2.9% and this could present Carolina an opportunity to get right in the passing game. They're going to need it because Chicago has been stout against the run. Carolina's 24th ranked rushing attack is going to have to grind it out against a 4th ranked Chicago unit that's only yielding 80 yards per contest. Carolina will also need to focus on playing more disciplined football. Offensively the Panthers are the 4th most penalized team in the league, contrast to Chicago's defense who is the least penalized unit in ALL of football. Penalties and/or lack thereof could have a huge impact on this game. Chicago is a bit more of an enigma on offense. Their passing attack ranks only slightly ahead of Carolina. Statistically, not much has changed with Bagent in relief of Fields, if anything they're taking fewer sacks. DJ "Feed Me" Moore will have a chip on his shoulder in this game and it wouldn't surprise anyone if the Bears try to force it to him from time to time. Beware though, Carolina's pass defense has been a rare bright spot and has logged plenty of practice against Moore. Instead, Chicago will likely prioritize attacking Carolina's poor rushing defense, testing it early and often. The Bears boast the 4th rank rushing attack at 135 YPG. This is strength against weakness and should be the linchpin of the Chicago game plan. On the injury front Frank Reich reported Brian Burns and CJ Henderson are in concussion protocol after Sunday's loss to the Colts. It's hard to expect Carolina to uphold the impressive and unlikely defensive standard without their best defensive player. The Panthers seem destined to find the point of no return with starters suffering injuries at every level of the defense seemingly every game. Justin Fields remains as the most impactful injury for Chicago. Vegas has the Bears at -3.5 as of Monday afternoon, which is nearly symmetric with the season averages of 20.9 vs 17.5. The Bears are playing at home on Prime time against a team that owes them a 2024 1st round draft selection. DJ Moore could be a huge X factor. His already impressive 2023 campaign checks in at 6th in receiving yards and sources say he is eating Wheaties every morning this week. The Panthers still have some pride and this game has talking points beyond the field. However, it won't be enough to make up the talent differential or short week on the road. Going to be hard to pair up with a Panthers fan that wants to pay face value to watch this garbage. Also, not sure you should be concerned tbh. It's going to be a Dallas home crowd no matter who you sell to.

Duncan is first and foremost an optimist. Second, he's a Bryce apologist. He has a pretty good football mind and is capable of putting out interesting content. Apologizing for Bryce and bashing the fanbase for having expectations is not good content though. His bias is affecting his commentary.

If the point here to place Reich & Co performance against peers then I'd like to see this adjusted for defensive scores. Mostly because the Reich & Co sample size is so small that two defensive scores makes a significant difference, almost 2 ppg. It's almost an exercise in futility though as we all know it's about as bad as it can be.

So when you're convinced Bryce is the guy then you only need one game to be objective? Mind you that game wasn't exactly mind blowing, it just happened to be his best performance to date. Otherwise, if you have any doubts about Bryce then one game, two games, three games, four games one week after another we're told it's too soon to have any objective opinion. I happen to agree with this notion by the way. I'm happy to give Bryce time to grow but I'm going to talk reality while he does. A passable performance against the Texans isn't the goalpost here. Sure we can all celebrate progress and improvement, but that's exactly what I'll call it. There are still plenty of issues originating from the QB spot even in this win. Most are to be expected and completely reasonable, but that doesn't mean can't recognize that our QB play atm, while improving isn't putting us on the map just yet. It's ironic that you guys only jump to defend Bryce. I called out the WR position as well which includes Mingo, another rookie. I don't see anyone here acting as his white knight and offering excuses for him. Nope, that's because we all agree that WR is an issue. Production is the only data point anyone cares about when it's not dressed like Bryce Young.

You're entitled to your opinion on the subject the same as I am. Under the best evaluation we have a rookie learning the ropes with very little help, unless you believe Bryce is playing to his ceiling already. My personal evaluation is that I'm encouraged by his improvement each week and look forward to seeing more of it. He is still a work in process. I think under any evaluation listing QB issues as an area that needs to improve is fair. Perhaps you didn't appreciate the wording.

We’re a bad team with a rookie QB who just won with 15 points against a Texans team that tied for the worst record in football last year and is also starting a rookie qb. We rushed for 44 yards and gave up six sacks. It’s an absolute miracle we won this game. We had an inspired defensive performance combined with an uninspired Texans offensive performance and that’s the real reason our penalty aided, game winning field goal drive was even consequential. The W shouldn’t confuse the situation at all. We have run blocking and protection issues, RB issues, WR issues, TE issues and QB issues. We threw for 180 yards (adjusted for sacks) and 1 TD and that was honestly Bryce playing his best football so far. Bottom line, neither Reich or Brown can solve these issues with “creative” or even “genius” play calling. We can’t execute the most basic poo. We checked down a flea flicker, I’ve literally never seen that. Miles Sanders ran the wrong route and nearly killed the most crucial play of the game. As fans we should hope and cheer for getting the little things right. If we can do that then there’s hope to install more expansive options and expect success. I’m thrilled for the W and will enjoy it for what it is, a scrappy win instead of a sloppy loss. I hope we can build from it and extract some confidence. In UFC they often say winning a title makes you 30% better automatically. We didn’t win a title but we did win a game and perhaps that will make us a little more confident we can do it again.

Well that’s counting at least three games he played in but didn’t complete due to significant injury. So he’s played no more than 14 complete games of 40.

Unless you're a top draft choice or high profile free agent then you have to take the longer road to opportunity.....earning it.

It feels great to erase that zero. Bryce played admirably today in the face of ridiculous pressure and zero run support. Defense played a whale of a game. Gotta enjoy any victory this year, especially the actual victories!

Otherwise, these comments say more about CJ than they do about Bryce. He can be trusted in front of a microphone, especially when asked about his lifetime friend. I imagine you'd have a hard time getting a negative word from CJ about any QB or player in the league tbh. He'll find the positive thing to say.
