If this doesn’t get you excited about Matt Corral, nothing will

I wasn't sure until the third season. -

I agree, although qb is a key component. I do think that qb play was our biggest weakness last year, with oline being a close second. If qb play improves, we should start winning some games. Maybe not enough to make the playoffs or be a contender yet, but enough to at least discuss being a contender eventually. -

And I hope he is right, but I get excited when we start winning games. -

The only thing that will get me "excited" about Matt Corral is winning football games. Chris Simms praise means nothing. -
The Texans could actually be good if Davis Mills continues to improve.
-
Well, if it ends up that way, it should make all the "lets tank for some Bama qb who looks great when he is surrounded by more talent than any other college team" happy.
-
I wouldn't. A few years ago, I saw some stat on teams that hit or miss on their draft picks, and we actually were in the top 1/3 of the NFL. I forget the exact number, but if a team had two draft picks per draft that lasted more than 3 years, they were above average. Fwiw, this is just an opinion, but I don't think we are the best, or the worst, when it comes to the Draft. Somewhere in the middle is more likely. But we have combined that with some really bad decisions related to free agency on the oline and qb. Which is why we have been so bad the last couple of years.
-
In fairness, you could probably say something similar about 90% of the teams in the NFL. The Bears preferred Mitch Trubiski over Patrick Mahomes. Washington preferred RG III over Russel Wilson. Dallas preferred Claiborne over Gilmore, etc... Draft is a crap shoot and only a handful of teams get it right more often than they get it wrong.

Does Rhule really think he has 5 years?
Davidson Deac II replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
100% Unless Corral turns out to be the second coming of Joe Montana, I think Rhule's days are numbered. -
I agree, this seems to be nit picking everything the front office says. Of course they are looking at bringing in veterans. As they should be. We had Cam in his prime and still brought in Derek Anderson. Got a pretty good backup out of the deal. If the right deal comes along, we should take it. If not, then we roll with what we have.

I think he will have five years if the team shows improvement this year and next. But the last half of the season for us last year, well we looked worse than we did the first season under Rhule. If that trend continues, then he won't be here, and shouldn't be here. -
The linked article is from last year. I am assuming that since the value of bitcoin has dropped, the op is implying that Okung's portfolio is no longer worth what it once was.

If we fix the qb situation, 10 is possible. If we roll Darnold out for most of the season, 4 or 5 at most.
-
Not so sure I agree. Or maybe its just that their are exceptions. Teams that have great qb's that are nearing the end of their career tend to max out their cap space in an attempt to win before the old guy retires. For example Green Bay has more dead cap than we do. The Saints do to, as they are still suffering from the Drew Brees pay. I think its more about competence in the front ffice and a little luck, especially when it come injuries. At least we won't be on the hook for much qb money after this year. If Corral works out, or if we have to draft another one next year, we should be able to put a good team around them.
-
We are 13th in dead cap this year. And we have more cap space than any other team, although I imagine that will change soon. But its clear that the front office has gotten better in that regard. If we can find a qb, and get the right staff on the field, we could end up in pretty good shape over the next few seasons.

Jeremy Fowler on Panthers QB search
Davidson Deac II replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Guess it depends on the definition of intelligence. Most good quarterbacks couldn't explain string theory, but they can analyze defensive coverage patterns. I suppose that is a type of intelligence. -
Jeremy Fowler on Panthers QB search

Because he wanted to come to Carolina and if he scored to high, he knew that someone else could pick him before we got him? lol -

The odds are against every single quarterback that gets drafted ever. Just look at Lawrence. It was said he was a sure thing, and yet he struggled a lot. Might work out eventually, but it shows just how much tougher it is to play qb in the NFL than it is in college. In fact, if you look at the qb's drafted in the top 10 over the last few years, the majority of them are backups or out of the league. Even if you look at the qb's drafted number 1 overall, more than half of them don't live up to expectations. IMO, Corral has the same chance of succeeding that just about anyone we might draft next year. That being said, if he doesn't look good this year, then I don't have an issue with drafting someone else next year. -
Tom Brady taking what should have been Greg Olsen's spot

Meh, doesn't really matter to me. I rarely care who is calling a game. -
If a city offers a new stadium and training facility...
Davidson Deac II replied to Jmac's topic in Carolina Panthers
I felt the same way when people first started talking about the Chargers moving to Los Angeles. That was a dumb move, and it's still a dumb move. The chargers are an afterthought in their own stadium. DIdn't stop them from doing it. -
Don't care. Incentives are necessary if you want your community to thrive. Just as building roads and infrastructure are necessary. Otherwise, we can watch the best and brightest move away to places that do provide incentives. I do think that sports teams get more than they deserve as they don't bring in as much revenue as they think they do. But I support incentives in general as a necessary evil.
-
I think the teams should get incentives just as other industries that bring jobs to the region do, but the incentives should be tied to the expected economic impact. BMW builds a plant in Charlotte, that plant brings a lot of jobs and money into the city. The city should offer incentives. NFL teams should get something as well, albeit smaller incentive packages, since they bring a smaller economic impact.

Regarding tech, I am considering Palo Alto, but haven't done much research regarding the fundamentals.

I don't really care about the comparison. Corral is a complete unknown, while Watson is a very good and proven NFL qb. All things being equal, I would rather have Watson regardless of the cost. But the off the field issues with Watson are a huge problem even if he isn't going to get punished as a criminal. If even half of the stories are true, there is a decent chance it will happen again. So in the end, I am glad Watson is not coming here. If Corral works out, so be it.

Chances Matt Corral starts Week 1
Davidson Deac II replied to ENCPantherfan2's topic in Carolina Panthers
Hopefully, 0%. But it depends on how well he plays and how badly Rhule needs him to remain employed.
