Anybody else think we are putting to much on Bryce's plate?
panthers55 replied to DennisM1's topic in Carolina Panthers
Cam had his best year with arguably his worse WR group. A goal of the coach is for the team to play better than expected with the overall product being better than the mere sum of the parts. So Thielen might not be a legitimate number 1 but on third down he is money and moves the chains. He has his role like Proehl did in 2003. That same year we had a 3rd year guy who had shown flashes mainly on special teams and gadget plays but not really stood out as a receiver make a huge push and was a main reason we went to the postseason that year. Maybe Marshall is that guy for us. But the big X factor is coaching which has been estimated to account for almost 30% of a teams' success. I don't see us getting outcoached very often this season. -

They started off expecting to ease Bryce into the scheme slowly and proceed at his own pace. He progressed so fast they have opened up more of the playbook accordingly. It isn't the coaches are expecting too much so much as Bryce is exceeding expectations and showing he can handle whatever they throw at him. As for talent we are running Reich's scheme and he picked his players for that scheme so no Bryc has the talent to run the offense. -
It is interesting to read and see different takes on the Panthers this year. Some have us as contenders while others say pretenders and over rated. I am on the contender side. We went 6-6 under Wilks and this staff is an upgrade. With a real quarterback and legitimate offensive scheme I just don't see us less than .500 barring major injuries. With some luck we could register our first winning season since 2017. I don't think that is unrealistic.

We need to keep him. I'll leave the how to the experts who are already discussing it with him now that they made Burns an offer. It isn't my money and the cap is easily manipulated. Let Tepper pay. Just get it done.

Steve Smith and Cameron Wolfe discuss Bryce and the Receiving Corps

Cam did in 2015. Jake did it in 2003. Cam elevated everyone's play including Olsen in 2015. We had the supposed worse receivers in the league when Benjamin was hurt. Jake had Moose and a Smitty who was years away from greatness. If that was our team alone there are tons of examples. And no Brady had crap for receivers much of his time there. All he had was a tight end to go to. -

No one said they wouldn't want an all pro over a good player or two. The point was there are many ways to win and having receivers by committee is one way teams spread the ball around and become less predictable. It doesn't mean you dont want prime Smitty on your team who pound for pound may have been one of the toughest guys I'm the league. 2005 was the triple crown for him. -

During the regular season it is often hard to key on particular players as you don't have the time and often the personnel to match up if injuries occur. You think Evans goes nuts on us if our secondary was healthy. And yeah in big games with time to prepare you can shut down any player even 89. And of course if you can afford great receivers you get them. But teams absolutely choose to avoid high priced guys and instead play WR by committee. The whole money ball thing was about replacing production instead of a player. So is Adam's worth more as a single player than 3 guys who all average 500 yards and collectively score the same numbers of TDs at a cheaper price? I would say at 31 years old, Adam's is beyond the age when most decline and live with injuries. If he gets hurt he takes most of the receiving talent with him whereas a good receiver getting hurt doesn't screw you up. And lastly does the player make the system great or does the system make the player great? I tend toward the latter so no I think 3 good guys in a good system is more valuable than a great player who is most of what the team has for weapons. -

I don't agree that one great player and several JAGs are necessarily better than 3 or 4 good guys in a game. That was the original premise. Of course I pointed out specific games to point out players can be shut out. Obviously they aren't going to shut out all the time or they wouldn't be considered a great player. And given that we haven't played any games with this team yet it might be a little soon to say that no receiver has to game planned against. Let's see the offense first. -

Actually there are several strategies to shut down a great offense with stud receivers and good defenses know these. How many yards did Kelsey get in their superbowl loss to Tampa in Superbowl 55 ( 31-9). Yeah Kelsey had 10 catches for 133 yards which is great right. But no TDs and only a few first downs and Hill had 73 yards. So they shut them both down from scoring which is the point. If your offense puts up 400 yards but only a few points you are going to lose. Belichick will often target the number 2 receiver with their best corner and double your number 1 guy. The point is that Football is a team game and the goal is to shop the opposition from scoring. But he isn't the only coach who uses the strategy of targeting the defense to shut down players. Many coaches will let one receiver get his catches and then shut other folks down knowing that one player can't carry the offense and the goal is scoring points not counting yards or catches. How about in 2005 when Smitty reeked havoc on teams and Seattle often triple teamed him because we had no other stud receivers and no running game. You can shut down any player you want as long as other guys don't step up. -

If you have a guy like Thielen you have a reliable 3rd down option. Having a huge stud at WR which is where you go all the time can be shut down easily enough if the defense keys on them. Then you need other guys to step up to take the pressure and keep teams from shutting down key players. Belichick loves to face teams with only 1 or big WR studs. He shuts them down and makes other guys beat you. -

If you think about it receiver by committee means you can't shut us down by concentrating on 1 or 2 players. Instead of 1 1400 yards receiver we might have 3 guys with 500 yards a piece. Instead of a negative it could be a positive. -
Evero's defense will be fast and aggressive.

Evero is already making a lot. Money won't be why he jumps, it will be to be a HC. Then again being DC on this staff might be better than HC of some teams. -

No doubt. He will be a candidate for HC and we better have someone in the wings learning the system. -
Anyone ever own a jersey of an infamous player?
panthers55 replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I had a Kerry Collins jersey but I burned it. I have a Kelvin Benjamin jersey and a signed Dwayne Jarrett because I thought they might be good. Had my D'Angelo Williams one but the way he left I burned it too. -

Reports were that multiple players had career years for Denver in Evero's first year in his new system. Apparently he makes the transition easy and knows how to maximize each players talent. If he does the same thing here this will be a top 5 defense. Apparently he is good at developing depth guys into decent starters as well. -
For that matter you could include 1996 as well given that we rode Capers 3-4 to the championship game on a great defense.

Having been here watching games live since 95, the music doesn't matter as long as you can dance to it. Seriously, we dance for diamonds, flex, do the wobble and the rest. That is window dressing. The music I love is when Cam dabbed and got love from the crowd as he airplaned around the field. It was the sweet crunch of helmet to pads as Thomas Davis put the hurting on an opponent who coughed up the ball. It is the cacophony of Luke cheers after he gets to the runner before the poor guy can take a step or intercepts another pass for a pick 6. What we have been missing is tough physical play where we intimidate the opponent. The fans feed off the players which then fuels players to play even tougher. Wilks reminded us of who we used to be. Now Reich and Evero and Thomas need to keep their pledge to making our offense and defense aggressive dictating to our opponent. Outside of 2015 have we ever done that on both sides of the ball?

I haven't heard many folks that think the transition will be difficult. We brought in folks up front who have played in a 3-4 and guys like Shaq have played in one under Rivera. We do have the personnel to run it. The bigger issue is how comfortable the players are running it and can they play without overthinking things. -

I know that everyone is excited about the offense but how well we do this year will be based on how the defense does. If we want to make noise this year we need to be a top 5 defense. Historically teams go deep in the playoffs due to a dominant defense. -
It is up to the team to provide exciting winning football to get the crowd going. It isn't the fans job to get the players excited. Fans pay lots of money to be entertained and players make millions to entertain the fans and get them going. Your suggesting it is the fans fault attendance is poor and the stadium is full of opposing fans. If you want fans not to sell their tickets then win more than 2 games out of 8 on offense. The fans I know and fellow PSL owners are loyal and start out each year hoping for good results. Since 2018 we have suffered as the product on the field was abysmal. But we will be back in force for Atlanta again. But if you want us back every game give us something to root for. It is up to the players not the fans to get the stadium rocking. Otherwise if we keep losing expect by mid-season to see more opposing fans. We are long suffering fans but we aren't Job, we have our limits.

https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/2023/07/04/panthers-ejiro-evero-fast-aggressive-defense-chuck-pagano/ One thing I want to see is how aggressive this zone coverage will be. Historically it hasn't been.

If you were here during Cams early years you saw the stadium rocking. Fans here are like elsewhere, they are paying a lot of money for a good product on the field. If they get it, they are very excited. If not then it will be like the past several years, crap everywhere.
