PFF had him rated at 61. Their system rates guys between 60-70 as average starters. Assume at the bottom of that so perhaps a little below average. Here is how everyone ended up. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.derp/platform/amp/2021/1/12/22226064/final-2020-ratings-for-all-carolina-panthers-offensive-players-per-pro-football-focus

Interested to see Trent Scott who started 4 games at left tackle. I hope he plays well and gives us a good option there and allows Moton to stay on the right if they want him there.

There is a reason no one else runs 3 high safeties and keeps everyone deep rushing 3 as their main scheme.. I have seen it used as a change up or when in prevent mode but as Warner said, no one runs it. Why?? Because it isn't a legitimate NFL defense and is easily exploited.

Last year is ancient history. While I surely have a different take, what is important is that we look a whole lot different this year. We have more talent and experience so now we need those exotic blitzes or is that still too hard??

Looking at many of the plays it looked like our guys were just as confused as the other team. Look at how many guys are just standing around as the offensive players run their routes. Many aggressive defenses teach players that if you don't have someone you are responsible for because of how they line up then you delay blitz and find a crease to bring pressure. This was a prevent defense with guys dropping deep and giving up the underneath stuff. Death by a thousand cuts. Look at how much pressure we got rushing three. I pray we rush 4 and 5 on every play like Baltimore and Pittsburgh who both press receivers off the line and confuse the coverage lining up 7 or even 8 close to the line. Employing those exotic blitzes that seem so effective against us. We need a tough physical aggressive defense not a gimmicky confusing college scheme that has been figured out I am sure. OCs have plenty of film to watch.

But there are compelling reasons to get PJ and Will work to see what they can do. And to see guys like CJ in action to determine if he is the real deal. Frankly I am glad the starters are sitting. I haven't heard or seen much of the starters let alone the backups.

My take is that one or two series in a meaningless game is not worth getting upset about. The Colts and Panthers went at it pretty hard. I expect there to be some fight and penalties this Sunday. The offense hasn't been fully installed and the starters just practiced for 4 hours against the Colts. So I don't see the problem in waiting until week 2. We may or not have a worthwhile backup which we need to find. So both guys will get plenty of action against a good team and we need to nail down our backup wide receivers. Other than the disappointment of not seeing him play, what is the big deal? No argument I have heard to start him is very convincing so far..

Matt Rhule after SECOND Joint Practice with the Colts
panthers55 replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yeah most fans don't understand how different a preseason game is versus a regular season game where gameplanning makes a huge difference. At this point we are still installing the offense and working on fundamentals. Cutting back on practices and especially padded practices due to the last CBA really hampers coaches with lots of new players or those putting in new schemes. Playing against 3 top 10 defenses who play somewhat different schemes is great practice and we will see lots of exotic blitzes this preseason. I hope Snow is taking notes and going to do the same for us when the regular season starts. -
Matt Rhule after SECOND Joint Practice with the Colts
panthers55 replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
Every coach has their way of doing things. If Darnold starts off the regular sluggish and unprepared then criticism for not playing him all preseason might be justified. But at this point considering how much we aren't hearing and what we do hear is highly opinionated fan speak from beat writers hyping up their team or phishing for views with controversial statements, why the angst and constant complaining? You really don't have a clue, none of us do. Can you wait until you do before going on and on complaining. Just asking for a friend..... -
The joint practices are much better than playing a series or three in a preseason game. On these practices you see film after you play and can go up against the same guys the next day to correct it. After games you either don't get a chance to play them again or have to wait weeks or months for a second chance. Hence the reason that playing a series or two in a preseason game is highly over-rated.

I wonder how many of the guys playing on the offensive line this game might become a starter by game 1.

I'm looking forward to seeing PJ with the 1s. Let's see if he is the real deal. And he gets to start against his old team. Great drama here. Let's see Tremble mix it up. Should be chippy as well with all the trash talking.

Matt Rhule after 1st Joint Practice with the Colts
panthers55 replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
He did say receivers were dropping balls and running wrong depths so there wasn't separation. But he also said this wasn't live. Guys weren't going 100%. They weren't cutting people or taking them down as they would in a game situation. He said he got good film on lots of guys to review so they can try and be better tomorrow. That is how you avoid looking like today come your opening game. -
I guess I misunderstood. I thought you suggested that Weiss installed his own system rather than put his own concepts into the larger Erhardt Perkins system he borrowed.

Matt Rhule after 1st Joint Practice with the Colts
panthers55 replied to SBBlue's topic in Carolina Panthers
C'mon now stop being positive. You need to bitch and complain about how bad we were. Everything Rhule said was coach-speak just to shine the turd. Everyone knows that players don't get better over time. -
Weiss installed his version of the Erhardt Perkims system which they still run today. It allows for a lot of variation and flexibility.. This article seems fairly accurate. https://americanfootballdatabase.fandom.com/wiki/New_England_Patriots_strategy

Jones is the perfect QB for NE. Good football IQ decent arm, proven winner who is cool under pressure. He can run an Erhardt Perkins system smoothly. He isn't athletic and doesn't have a great arm but he can be successful without it.

Thursday joint practice news and tweets
panthers55 replied to Captain Morgan's topic in Carolina Panthers
It is possible to be optimistic and a realist at the same time. Being positive and looking for the good even in a bad situation is an attitude you assume despite the reality. You surely know what is happening because that doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the obvious. It is the ability to reframe things to avoid constant anger and disappointment in the team you chose to root for. Being positive the past 3 years has been difficult given the great starts and terrible finishes. For me it is remembering that the past had nothing to do with the present or the future unless it was the recent past. So each year I know that it is a do over and a chance to do better. So I stay optimistic and hope for the best. What you characterize as a type of naivete or blind allegiance, I characterize as supporting my team and giving them the benefit of the doubt until they deserve otherwise. And after last year's 3-5- 3 prevent defense and the reports today it would be easy to be critical of the defense but that would be ridiculous at this point. -

I am really looking forward to seeing practice tomorrow. The Colts defense gave our offense plenty of bulletin board material. Hopefully we respond when it counts on Sunday. We'll not really counts but you know what I mean. -

I was excited to see guys in pads getting some live action. Rhule is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. He is rotating guys everywhere evaluating their fit. The goal today was not to beat the Colts or look better or worse but try different guys at different positions to see how they do. All that reporting was by fans for fans of each team to create excitement. It was a healthy competition to evaluate individual players and develop film to evaluate and teach with. Hopefully wiffing on a pass block assignment onlt requires some technique adjustment rather than serving as a harbinger of portending events. -

We are platooning guys in on offense every snap and people here fall apart because we don't look sharp. Of course we don't have any chemistry. We don't even have many guys who even played together last year out there at one time. And do you think our defense is going to.look great when we aren't blitzing and only going man coverage over and over again. Do we really have to have this extreme angst throughout the preseason. I thought folks here would at least have better perspective.- 362 replies

You guys do know that we aren't going to show much today and everything will be vanilla Sunday. To make much of today or this week is was premature. The over reactions are ridiculous -
The closest thing to a must-win game in years?
panthers55 replied to top dawg's topic in Carolina Panthers
For me it depends how we play. If we play well but the Jets play better then I can accept a loss. If we play poorly then I won't be happy if we win or lose. Sure a win is a win but it won't give me that much hope for the future. On the other hand the measure of a team is how it handles adversity just as much as how they handle success. So even if we lose week 1, if we come back and smack NO I wil be much happier. -
Bleacher Report article mentioning Darnold.
panthers55 replied to Tr3ach's topic in Carolina Panthers
If no one is open and you try to make something happen that is what causes turnovers. Hopefully this year with a better scheme more guys will be open so Sam can play inside the offense and take what the defense is giving him. -
Bleacher Report article mentioning Darnold.
panthers55 replied to Tr3ach's topic in Carolina Panthers
Can't deny that film can make a difference for the defense but Darnold is also gaining experience and confidence as he goes and watching film gameplanning against that defense as well. So it very possible that his improvements will compensate for any disadvantage he gets from teams seeing him in our system. Something that Teddy didn't do last year when teams realized he couldn't or wouldn't throw the deep ball. That won't be Darnold's issue for sure.
