What I have said all along is that one of Snows best ability is to learn and adapt to both his personnel and what works at the level he is at. This defense is very different than last year in terms of complexity and matchups. It is also the exact type of defense I begged for since the last season was over. This scheme he did not run in college with all the multiple looks. Partly because he now is dealing with professionals who play football for a living not in between classes and other things and because their skills are significantly better. This type of defense has shown to be one of the best over the years in the NFL and I am grateful he is using it. It is so nice to see pressure looks. Reminds me of Jim Johnson with more man looks and variation. I hope we stick with it.

Exactly. You get to the line quickly, look at the defense and then adjust your play and protections based on what Darnold sees. You try and get favorable matchups or overloads for an easy pitch and catch. I used to hate that NO would always have someone open on every play but now that we run a similar scheme, I love it. I mean I hate the Saints but like their offensive scheme.

Different teams may use the term for different things but a hot read is usually a pre-designed play to a receiver to avoid a blitz. Often the receiver sits down in the area just vacated by the Blitzer. It is something the receiver and quarterback already have worked out based on what the film says about the defense tendencies based on down and distance and how the defense lines up. So there isn't an audible needed. That isn't a hot read which is what you go to when the defense blitzes. That is presnap manipulating the defense getting the right matchup for example Christian on a linebacker by audiblizing. So Darnold knows where he is going to go and waits for Chrstian to clear. That is very different from what you imply which is that he is staring down down receivers giving the defense time to cover. Why in the world would you look deep when you know the coverage is swung that way and you have a miss match. As for throwing into a tight window that criticism only applies if he tries to squeeze a ball in while another guy is left wide open and he totally misses it. With the lack of receiver quality the Jets had and the porous line I bet many of Darnolds throw the last several years had to be in tight windows. That is all he had.

Defensive play design is very different than offensive play design. Defense is more read and react while offense is usually more cerebral. For example many times a corner who doesn't have anyone on his side will crash down and blitz unless he is playing man and the corner follows the receiver. It is an automatic read and react. It is chess for sure but usually the offense is more controlled and scripted while the defense is give em he'll and get after it.

Actually many of the guys are also back from last year but playing much better in a better scheme. Sure we have better talent but I don't think last year's scheme maximized the talent we did have. And that is all I am going to say about that ..

Rivera was great with culture too but that only goes so far on the field.

I already conceded that. What I didn't see was big adjustments as the season progressed which should have occurred if the only issue was lack of practice. We ran a prevent all season long. But again not going to focus on the past. He is running a great scheme so far.

I agree to a point but not totally. I think he brought a lot of college stuff like the 3-5-3 and played conservatively given the lack of practice due to Covid and learning a new system. But he found out that pro quarterbacks eat up zones unless you get pressure. I think he saw last year what really worked for other defenses and we drafted players and acquired free agents to run a more aggressive scheme and he adapted things accordingly. We can say that he had this all figured out last year and just didn't have the people but that negates a lot of scheme problems that were apparent last year. I think Snow learned a lot as well in his first season as DC which he is putting in place. Just my 2 cents and I could be wrong

The defensive line scheme is very good but not that unique. The Ravens and the Steelers have run variations of this for years. It is exactly what I have been advocating for the past year. I doubt it is chance that we are running schemes like the Steelers and Tepper was part owner of the Steelers. I imagine he let's coaches do their thing but I think he had a say in the overall scheme and how aggressive he wants them to be.

This offense and Darnolds adjustments are designed to create mismatches for specific guys on specific plays. So Darnold tracking a receiver he knows is in a favorable matchup is smart and what QBs do. If that isn't available then he goes down the progressions if he has time or dumps it off. Given he is getting the ball out in about 2.5 seconds how many progressions should he cover especially when he knows who is going to be open most times??

Not necessarily. If you are trying to get better you might play your scheme and even though you get burned alot the guys learn in your scheme and improve. Other than Horn we have many of the same guys in the secondary the first 2 games. It wasn't like the zone we used was effective either especially with the lack of any pressure. We have surely played better with average to below average safeties and corners in the past. But enough of the past. I am excited for the present.

Not so sure we were that much better in the second half. In our last 5 games we gave up 28 points, 32 points, 24 points, 13 points and 33. Even against Green Bay we gave up 24.

I think the defense and particular the secondary was very different between Green Bay and the Saints. One was a prevent shell while last week was a primarily man cover often cover 0 pressuring receivers off the line preventing the quick hitters. I hope we keep the man and retire the prevent defense of last year. Especially since we now have the guys to run a man scheme.

I didn't think Donte would be playing this well. I am happy to say that Snow is running the exact defense I hoped he would after hearing on his arrival how aggressive he liked to be.

It will come down to stopping the run and managing screen plays which Houston will use to slow down the rush. A great run game is a rookies best friend. Coupled with a short passing game to get the ball out quick and it will come down to tackling and solid technique. Teams will figure out that you have to beat us by nickel and diming us down the field trying to negate our pass rush.
