Shaq said in January that he wanted to play out the last year of this contract and retire a Panther. Said money wasn't the issue and knew others had to be paid before him. So this is consistent with what he had said since the season ended. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article271055752.html

Ryan Poles trying to drive up the cost of the #1 pick
panthers55 replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
He is going to.keep swinging for homeruns. At least that is what he said. He will likely cover his bases by moving up for a rookie and getting a vet or two as well. If you cover your bases and do what Tepper wants you dont have to worry about getting fired. -

And if that bold move fails then you are out the door as well. Cant put all your eggs in that one basket. Best to have a vet and a drafted guy to increase chances you will be successful. How many qbs make it through the season uninjured. You need two guys who can win games if needed. -
Strange isn't it. Just goes to show we either don't draft well or don't know how to develop ones.

What a Shaq extension/restructure could look like
panthers55 replied to ECHornet's topic in Carolina Panthers
I suspect they will give him an extension to spread out his cap hit with little guaranteed money with voidable years so he can play as long as he stays productive or retire without much dead cap to account for when he leaves or is cut. -
Sure it can. We had a big discussion here about using cash over cap to be able to spend more than you have to account for in your cap by restructures, signing bonuses for extensions, voidable years and the list goes on. Cash strapped teams can't do that as they don't have 100s of millions to throw around.

Georgia had a deep tight end pool so he had to share the catches with lots of other guys. He seems to me that he would be a huge matchup issue in the secondary. What did he run ? 4.65 sticks in my head. What safety or even linebacker wants to keep up or tackle him. Just the size differential is worth drafting him. He would contribute immediately and could eventually be a starter. I suspect we are bringing in a vet tight end through free agency.

And if it doesn't look good we will push it further down the road. When you have an owner with plenty of money then cash over cap let's you manipulate the numbers and lower your cap. This restructure was built into the original contract he signed. This is the way....

He is going to be restructured for this year. They might extend him and add voidable years but he said he wanted to retire after this season as a Panther and would be amenable to working things out. -
You have to like Washington's size which makes him a huge target. I would have no problem taking him at 39. Learning to run downfield 10 yards and turning around to catch a ball isn't exactly hard to master. And let's be honest with his size and speed if he gets loose in the secondary he is gone. Then again I like some of the other guys as well.

In-Depth Film Evaluation on QB Anthony Richardson
panthers55 replied to Saca312's topic in Carolina Panthers
Agree. I thought Shenault had real potential on the few plays he was in. And TMJ came on strong when Darnold came in. TE is a huge need right now. Add another dynamic WR, and of course solve the QB issue and we could have a top 15 offense right away and eventually a top 10 offense to go along with our top 5 defense and number 1 special teams. -
Darnold has been a backup and handled it very well. He is willing to compete like he did with Baker and let the best man win. When he didn't he did everything he could to help the starter succeed. So he would approach it the same way with a rookie. Better that than a vet to be the starter like Carr who likely wouldn't want to be there just as a mentor and a backup
-
Reich needs to have a winning season given Wilks went 6-6 with a revolving door of qbs and didn't get to pick his players or coaches like Reich did. So the days of starting a rookie and going 4-13 aren't going to cut it. We need a qb who can win now and allow any rookie to develop over time as has been traditionally the case. Mahomes benefitted greatly from sitting a year and watching Alex Smith for example. What vet is a better value??
-
Lots of people think he did pretty good. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.espn.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/37267/sam-darnold-putting-panthers-himself-in-position-for-success-by-staying-patient%3fplatform=amp Again no one says we shouldn't draft a qb but the question is whether Darnold at say 15 million is a better value for example than Carr at 30 mil. And whether he can start until a younger guy can take over.. Should be interesting what they decide with Carr on Monday after seeing and interviewing the draft class.
-
It is one that has historically been used to compare qbs so it has legitimacy and long standing. You don't ignore it just because it doesn't fit your agenda.
-
And I will ignore you again. Tell me something new you haven't said over and over ad nauseum.
-
QBR is like judging defenses by total yards surrendered. There are surely other measures and some might be superior but it gives us a comparison level that has become standard in the NFL.
-
Not at all. He is the same player he has always been but with decent coaching and a good line his results were pretty good. The point is that while he isn't going to carry a team on his back he can be decent to good with support. What you did was break those six games into small segments and tried to draw conclusions from very limited data while I used composite score for the most part to show overall improvement. My response to the Pittsburgh game was in response to a specific complaint that he didn't do well when teams blitzed or used pressure. Pittsburgh was the most obvious game where pressure was applied and they took away the run game to make him pass. And his rating was 108. And like you see bad indicators I see improvement in areas like better timing and not rushing his steps, getting the ball out quicker, better movement in the pocket, doing a better job of reading defenses and adjusting to blitzes and pressure. These are the things that coaching impacts and he is clearly coachable and able to make adjustments based on practice. Those are the things I see which give me hope he can continue to.improve since the coaching has taken a big upturn.

You don't try something different just to do it differently. It has to be different and better. And I am sure we are considering lots of options including PJ
-
Your analysis is very limited unless you compare how many times it occurred. Since we went 4-2 and we were either leading in most games or getting blown out how many times were we up by 10 or tied or behind by 10. And if we were tied was it for 1 drive or a quarter. The idea of situational stats are useful if you have a big enough N to make it meaningful. Using 6 games is too few to make meaningful comparisons about specific situations which may have occurred once or twice. Better to.look at trends and big picture to avoid putting too much meaning into each specific event unless it is very significant. And if you are using 2021 or older then it was a different situation.

In the games we ran for less than 100 yards he actually did well outside of New Orleans. And yes that counts the least. The team had nothing to.play for and who exactly played well. So while it counts it is an outlier and not as telling as when we were making a run to the playoffs.
-
Why add the one game against the Saints once everything was decided. That wasn't a crucial game. The games that counted were his first five. Go back and recalculate your math. In 4 of those 5 his rating was over 100 and combined it was 105.
-
He isn't plan A. He is one of the options like Corral and a rookie are. If he ends up playing the best then he deserves to start. If other folks are better then he should sit.

What free agent QB had a better win percentage than .666 in 2022 who would be available cheaper than Darnold?
