Matt Corral fans, tomorrow should be a good day
panthers55 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
The nfl is a copycat league. You think that nobody can see how they do their contracts and copy that. It isn't rocket science. And no the Saints still haven't paid up yet and signed guys like Kamara to big contracts. -

And they will restructure several of those huge contracts once again to lower the cap. We can sign who we want, just ask New Orleans. -
How much playing time will Matt Corral get on Saturday?
panthers55 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
You aren't following along obviously. They won't play in preseason 2 because they will take all the reps in the scrimmages for 2 days. But that doesn't mean he won't play them before then or after. Besides why give Corral and PJ all the work in preseason. PJ won't be here and obviously giving reps to Corral wasn't the plan all along or he would have gotten more work to begin with. He hardly knows the offense which is why he only played in drills and not in the 7 on 7s. Or 11 on 11s for the most part. And with the disaster last year why would you recreate that again. But no need to go back and forth 20 times. All will be revealed this weekend -
How much playing time will Matt Corral get on Saturday?

I just read that Rhule said that neither Sam or Baker will play in the second preseason game because they will gets lots of work during the 2 days of scrimmage with the Patriots. That convinces me more that Sam and Baker will play quite a bit in the first scrimmage and that Corral and PJ will split the second game. No telling about the third. -

Not only that but both Baker and Sam will play in the first half. How long they play is determined by how they do when they go out there and how well the line protects. Last year is history and after what happened I would think Rhule is going to do it differently. If he going to decide after game 2 who the starter will be, it makes no sense not to play Sam or Baker in the first preseason game. No I think it will Baker for 1 or 2 drives and Sam for the same. Pj gets the third quarter and Corral gets the 4th. Corral has the least grasp on the playbook so there is no way he plays that long unless we are running alot. I doubt he even has the playbook down yet. No knock on him but this offense is pretty complex and he has no experience in a pro offense or reading NFL defenses. Anyone who thinks Corral will play most of the game are not paying attention. -
Simms is right on the money re the competition

He already said if one plays they both will. -

You only get 3 preseason games and you are building a new line. The starters need work too. It isn't like anyone except Moton is a starter on the line. -

I bet both qbs play this weekend and let's see how they do. I can't imagine we won't play Baker and Darnold given the supposed competition. -
Ellis Williams. Mayfield Va Darnold Day 9
panthers55 replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
The goal is to push both quarterbacks through competition. That benefits both of them and the Panthers given both guys missed time last season with injuries. We need 2 qbs who can play a few games if needed not one. Baker is going to be the starter when it matters. -
Baker is a franchise qb who has experienced success. In our system with a smaller ego and ithe motivation of a contract year, there is every reason to expect he will play his best. But the reason for my optimism is our coaching. Not rah rah Rhule but experienced NFL coaches like Campen and Wilks even if you aren't sold on McAdoo. This is the first time in Rhules tenure that we have former NFL head coaches on both sides of the ball. Such a change from proclamations like they didn't do that before so we didn't prepare for that from Snow or Brady. Or we didn't practice redzone plays. From what I have read we did lots of situational work already. I agree coaching will be important but it won't be Rhule that will make the difference.

Not sure we can say much about the line until we start playing. There are many defensive ends who.played the run well and aren't any bigger than our guys. Strahan- 250, TJ Watt - 251, Khalil Mack. - 247 Jason Taylor - 245. Aaron Donald is listed anywhere between 260 and 280 at defensive tackle. The majority weigh around 300. Even Suh as a nose tackle is only 313. Now look at our players. We are just as big and strong. It is scheme and technique that make the difference not just size. Obvious talent too. But to say our front seven are small just isn't supported by the numbers. Our scheme was poor last year. When we would play Dallas and we had a big oline and good runners they would play 5 linemen with their hand in the dirt and go wide 9 to.push everything inside. How many times did we do that last year unless we were blitzing. None. We have the players let's see if we have the coaching.

But if you shut down the pass then your linebackers can play run first and be closer to the line and your lineman don't have to sell out on pass rushing and can read and react.

Ellis Williams write up Day 5. Baker vs Sam
panthers55 replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
One think it appears is that Baker uncorking it has forced Darnold to do the same. It seems both guys are airing it out and chucking it down the field in a good competition. It should benefit both of them. -
This is one competition I am glad to lose. Although I did have ACL replacement on a knee and extensive surgery on my shoulder. Sports related. It seems the old guys who still compete sports are those athletes who avoided injury early or didn't play sports much at all until later essentially saving their bodies a lot of wear and tear.

If Baker gets hurt and he does have an injury history you better have a backup who can start a few games. Nothing yet says that guy is Corral so of course you give Darnold reps. Truth is neither Darnold or Baker nor Corral for that matter have been in a QB competition. So of course you give reps to each and build in as much competition as possible. That will raise all ships and benefit everyone.

Don't wear socks with sandals or slip ons or flip flops. Looks bizarre to me but my kids wear them and think it is fine.

Crocs sweat my feet. They arent very durable and retain foot stank. No thanks. As he slowly slinks away wearing his baby boomers new balance sneakers.

If you listen to the whole interview it is clear that the key word is competition to bring out the best in everyone. So he was saying he isn't picking someone as the starter going into camp but letting them determine the starter based on their play in practice and games in preseason. I didn't think it was that ambiguous. But that's me....

Julio had some of his biggest games against us. He might be old and slow but we still need to give him his due and guard him closely. With Brady as QB it makes any receiver dangerous.

More behind the scenes info on the Mayfield trade
panthers55 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Everyone expects Baker to be a bust or boom. I think he will help us get to 9-8 which would be excellent. Then let him play another year in the same system and see if we improve. He isn't a top tier qb yet but he is still young and has a lot to learn. I figure that Rhule and his process is actually exactly what Baker needs. If he buys in he can be here a while and become the franchise guy for us. Or a one year rental if he doesn't. -

I agree that they couldn't hand over the reins to Darnold without seeing some real change and may have been pressed to put Corral in before he was ready Baker ensures we get decent qb play but I expect Darnold to play the best he has since being signed. It is a contract year and he has the best weapons and line he has ever has. Let's get ready to rumble and let the chips fall where they may. -
I think we still have 21 million available. We can sign anyone we want.

Tom Glick was one of the guys who left. He was just named CEO for Chelsea who is a European soccer powerhouse. Did he leave to get rid of Tepper or move on to bigger and better things like many top executives.

Depends on where we draft and how much it costs to move up. In 2022, quarterback costs were very small to draft a good one. In 2021 it took multiple firsts to move up to snag a top QB. If they stay as sought after as 2021, I am not sure cheap would apply if it costs multiple firsts to acquire even if they are on a rookie contract.

The problem was both the offense and defense. It takes executing on both sides of the ball along with at least an average special teams to win games. We rarely played well on both sides of the ball in the same game. With little consistency we were all over the place and often collapsed in big situations. I think because the offense will be better, it will help the defense play looser knowing we can come back.
