Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?
jayboogieman replied to PanthersATL's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Panthers still had other options besides Teddy and the top prospects. They could have easily taken Mond, Trask, or any of the other QBs in the draft. So Sam is a franchise QB? -
Guess the refs have it in for the Hornets tonight too.

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?

With Teddy or without Teddy, they still could have drafted a QB or signed a free agent QB. There were options. I had edited my post after I saw your reply to MrScot. You should have just said franchise QB instead of the next Cam if that is what you meant. -
Decent half. Hopefully they can keep it up in the second half.

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?

I agree that they didn't handle Cam or Teddy well. That said, they were not forced to trade for Sam. There were more than five QBs in the draft, plus free agent QBs. They traded for Darnold because they wanted to, not because they had to. You think Fields would have been another mistake. Others may feel that he would have been a solution to the problem had they drafted him. If this is another rebuild year, Rhule doesn't have to worry about wins as much, so Darnold being a short term answer doesn't matter. Rhule just has to show that the team is buying into what he is saying and showing some improvement. 2022 and beyond will be a different story though. I'm a long time Panther fan as well. You wanting the next Cam is your problem. I want the guy that can help the team become a consistent winner and finally have back to back winning seasons. Edit: Just saw your other post about not finding a Cam clone, but a franchise QB. You should have just said franchise QB instead of the next Cam. -
Dell was wrong about the Clippers getting open looks because of Leonard. They are getting open looks because the Hornets have been giving them up for years.
-
There has been some bad misses from both teams so far.
-
An ok start to this one. They might lose the last two games since the Hornets generally haven't played well in those early afternoon games.

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?

How does taking Fields add to the blemish if they thought he was a franchise QB or at least better than Darnold? Correcting mistakes is a good thing. The simple fact might be they just think Darnold is better than Fields. -

Darnold is the same age as some of the rookie QBs and had only been a starter 3 years before being drafted including high school. (source) Despite having 3 years of NFL experience, he hasn't played a complete NFL season (source), so he could be equated to a rookie. His advantage over the rookies is that he should be use to the speed of the NFL game. I agree that nobody knows what will happen. I don't agree that the team thinks they need a QB though. -
But does Pepperidge Farm?

Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?

How can you see anything with Darnold on the Panthers when they haven't played yet other than your own narrative? He could become good or he could be bad. We just won't know until they play this fall. It seems there are several of you guys that want Darnold to fail and Fields to be great just so you can pat yourselves on the back and crow about being right. -
Draft Analysis: "A massive value-destroying error"?

That's the thing. What defines the hole? Does a high draft pick fill it just because the guy is a high draft pick? How long should the QB be given to prove that he can do the job? That's why I stated I disagreed with him about taking a QB in the first round every year. -

I'm not trying to over complicate this. Your stated opinion was that a team with a hole at QB should use their first round pick each year until they find their guy. Teams that have a hole at QB should. Now you are saying that if you draft a QB high, you give him a real shot. What is a real shot? One year? Three years? Does drafting a QB high one year mean you can't draft one highly the next year? If he plays his rookie year, he got a chance. If he didn't play, the hole is still there since you can't know if he is the guy or not yet. And according to you, they should draft another QB in the first. But wait, now you are saying we have to give the first guy his chance, so should the team take a different position in the draft or not? Edit: Oh yeah, the last two superbowl winning teams built the team before they got their QB. -

And what if the QB plays like most other rookie QBs have? Not good or bad enough for you to tell one way or the other? Should they still take another QB the next year? -

What if Cam didn't play well though? Should Carolina have drafted another QB Cam's second year or should Ron and Co have given him more time? If Lawrence plays poorly, should the Jags draft another QB next year or should they continue to surround him with better players? From what you stated teams that need a QB should be spending their first round picks on QBs until they find their guy so by that logic the answer is yes, both teams should keep drafting QBs instead of giving those guys another chance. Trubisky is going into his fourth year and the Bears' braintrust are wanting to hang on to their jobs, so of course, they drafted another QB to buy more time. And if Fields plays poorly does Chicago draft another QB next year? Again, your logic about using first round picks on QBs says they should. You are assuming the Panthers don't view Darnold as their guy because you don't view him that way. They seem to think Darnold is their guy and that Fields wasn't worth the pick. -

I disagree. Not all prospects play at a high level right out of the gate. Sometimes it takes guys more than one season to put it together, especially if they were drafted by a bad team. Taking another QB in round one right after you drafted one the previous year is a huge waste of draft capital that could be used to get your young QB a WR, LT, or whatever else. You have to give them a fair shake before you move on to the next one. And trading a first round QB for a lower pick a year later is a waste of resources if you can trade him at all. -
You get to be LT! And you get to be LT!

Official NFL Schedule Day Leaks and such and stuff

You'll get a Thursday night game and like it too! Just kidding. I thought it was a mandate that every team gets one of those so the NFL can say every team gets a national primetime game. -

Thank goodness -
The Nuggets don't need the refs' help, but they are getting it.
-
Fun game, but the Hornets have zero defense unless it is a lucky steal.
-
I understand Biz not looking for a lot of shots as he knows that isn't his game. Cody though, he can score fairly easily when he wants to. He's just always been too happy to pass the ball and set a screen.
-
Cody should have taken that mid range shot. He was wide open.
