I’ve liked Canales for a month or so..the more I read, more I liked him still, performance based business …in my mind the issue with the panthers is talent evaluation and that starts with regional scouts and goes all the way up that chain and that is on Morgan’s side of the house we can say the selections ‘didn’t map the appropriate skill to the coach’s scheme’ all we want but regardless of coaching scheme, the drafting has been awful and free agents on pro personnel not much better. if they want to compete, they better fix that pretty damned quick

Canales’ track record with struggling quarterbacks is encouraging. Geno Smith won the AP Comeback Player of the Year in 2022 when Canales was the Seahawks’ quarterbacks coach and the Bucs’ Baker Mayfield is a finalist for the award this year. There’s a rich irony that the Panthers hired Canales in part for his work with Mayfield a year after they released him when interim coach Steve Wilks decided to play Sam Darnoldover Mayfield. The Panthers stayed in touch with Young’s representatives throughout the search. A source close to Young and his representation said the No. 1 pick is optimistic about Canales and likes that he’s young with a strong track record with quarterbacks. Smith and Mayfield had career years with Canales, with Mayfield throwing for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns in the regular season before leading Tampa Bay to a wild-card win over Philadelphia. The Bucs’ offensive numbers overall weren’t stellar. They were last in the league in rushing, 23rd in total offense and 20th in scoring (20.5 ppg), but finished 17th in passing. Tampa Bay managed just 228 yards and three field goals in a 9-0 win at Carolina in Week 18, when Morgan and Canales spent a few minutes catching up before the game at Bank of America Stadium. The Bucs’ offense fared better in Canales’ first meeting against Carolina and Evero, whom the Panthers hope to retain. Evero interviewed for the head-coach opening in Atlanta and remains in the mix for the position in Seattle. But he’s under contract with the Panthers, who can block him from taking a lateral move. Personnel executives and other officials around the league said they’ve heard good things about Canales but don’t know much about him because of his relative inexperience. As recently as 2020, Canales was helping out with the Seahawks’ tight ends as the team’s passing game coordinator. Former Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, who was in Seattle that year, recently posted on X that he “spent a lot of time talking ball and philosophy” with Canales. If Canales is successful in putting Young on a path to success, Tepper will look like a genius for hiring him before anyone else was considering it. If Young fails to thrive in Canales’ system — which, like Thomas Brown’s, is an offshoot of Sean McVay’s — Tepper will be blasted for hiring one of Morgan’s buddies and pairing an inexperienced head coach with an inexperienced GM. Essentially, Canales has one job. And no one in the organization can afford for him to screw it up.

Sometimes you have to read the book to the end their offense and baker got exponentially better as the season went on post Tom Brady no one saw the Bucs in the playoffs the guy trained under Pete Carroll. Canales managed to make Baker relevant again there are similarities with Yoing and Baker Smaller size. Not great arm strength etc better rolling to see the field might as well hope as not i do not believe young is the answer in the nfl but maybe improved this year with a simpler offense designed for him vs against as Einstein said paraphrased ‘if you expect a fish to climb a tree, you will always be disappointed’

Agree i took the time to look at some of his interviews on YouTube. Very level headed. Calm guy. His takes on offense and how to run it are simple, common sense, adaptable to all situations of common sense and execution Smart he also knows how to get TEs involved god knows, with Young at Qb, something needs to happen that is not overly complicated or exotic he made baker look good….having Evans, Godwin and a decent oline helped I get people like exotic offense like McDonald’s but they are sitting home. all the other offenses are not overly complicated

I read two days ago that the Commanders were flying a full contingent via private jet to Johnson for an interview you know, sometimes, not getting what we think we want is a blessing I get the guy is a fine coordinator…he also has exceptional players around him who execute at a high level …but what makes that team go is Campbell… there is no telling how a coordinator will do as a head coach or a headcoach who holds onto coordinator duties…the successful ones, can be counted on one hand besides all of that, what would benefit Johnson to come here …maybe it’s too many issues for him when his path could be much smoother in DC
