Was in Durham yesterday talking with some folks, native NC folks, and they have absolutely no clue just how remote some areas of western NC are. We may never know the real toll on human life this storm took for months, if at all. As a former resident of Asheville, it's difficult to look at some of the damage without thinking of the smaller communities not located in the population center. Edneyville, Gerton, Fairview. Some of those smaller communities are only accessed by small roads to begin with. Eric Rudolph eluded the FBI for 5 years living in the woods of Western NC, if that gives you any idea.

I'll be in the Lenovo Center for tonite's exhibition. I think the starters are playing, so it might be worth watching.

Wednesday $10 General Admission Game
Anybodyhome replied to Panthers Fan 69's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina playing their camp roster and Nashville playing their starters. Already 2-0 Nashville 7 minutes in. Perets doesn't even look AHL ready. -
Perhaps one of the more underrated singer/songwriters of the last 50 years, he passed last week at 78. One of the architects of the California folk-country-rock sound, he co-wrote huge hits for the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. Best of My Love, Victim of Love, How Long, Heartache Tonight and New Kid in Town are but a few. He and fellow Detroit native Glenn Frey were roommates in SoCal in the late 60s and recorded an album together under the name Longbranch Pennywhistle (which I own a mint copy). He later put together the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band (SHF Band, for some), with Chris Hillman from the Byrds and Richie Furay from Buffalo Springfield. He was instrumental in getting Don Henley and later, Glenn Frey in the studio as backing musicians for Linda Ronstadt and then brought in Bernie Leadon from the Flying Burrito Brothers and Randy Meisner, the bass player from Poco. With Linda Ronstadt's full support, the foursome of Henley, Frey, Leadon and Meisner launched the Eagles. I'm very fortunate to have been able to see all of these people perform either solo or with their bands, the Eagles, Ronstadt, Poco, the list goes on. He worked extensively with Linda Ronstadt, contributing songs and worked on the production side with some of her albums. They dated through the early to mid-70s. He also worked with Don Henley, James Taylor, and was dating Stevie Nicks after he and Ronstadt broke up. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013. I'll be listening to both of my SHF Band albums as well as Longbranch Pennywhistle.

The fear of moving into a different vibe because of the lead singer is very real. Look at Journey when Steve Perry walked away- they found someone who sounds nearly identical. Same with Foreigner when Lou Gramm left. On the other hand, Van Halen was far more successful with Sammy Hagar than David Lee Roth; and there are plenty of other bands who simply won't survive without their respective front-person, LP being one of those.

This is an often used, yet very misleading argument. There is no such thing as a team not making money in the NFL. Revenue sharing, TV contracts, etc. guarantee every team makes money every season. On the other hand, yes, one can call out an owner for being "cheap," but I'd offer that you should look at their cap situation before making that declaration. So, let's not confuse "cheap" ownership and how much money the team is making because they're 2 completely different things. In 2023, the league set another record with $13B in revenue, working out to $400M per team. https://www.sportico.com/leagues/football/2024/nfl-national-revenue-2023-tv-13-billion-1234786762/ The NFL’s economic model is the envy of every other major sports league, thanks to two main principles. The system benefits from a relatively hard salary cap that restricts owners from NBA-like spending that triggers luxury tax penalties. In 2023, the NFL salary cap was $224.8 million, with each club also on the hook for nine-figures worth of player benefits, stadium costs and team expenses. The other huge plus is the guaranteed check from the league each year that dwarfs the cap before a team sells a single ticket, beer, sponsorship or parking space. The result is that every NFL team is wildly profitable and worth at least $4 billion, with an average franchise value of $5.14 billion last year. Oh, and the team with the least amount of cap space as of yesterday, by some $2.6M, is the Carolina Panthers, with a mere $909k at their disposal. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/_/year/2024/sort/cap_maximum_space

Except Eli beat the Pats and Tom Brady twice in the Super Bowl and he'll likely get into the HOF.

To be fair, none of the Florida regulars were dressed and tomorrow night will look like tonight in Florida's favor. That being said, I liked the line of Aho, Jarvis and Roslovic. Ghost looks like he never left and will likely be QB PP1 and give Burns a rest this season.

Lake Lure dam is failing according to WRAL, and a mandatory evacuation is underway.

I thought DeSantis outlawed any form of climate change and strictly forbids anyone from talking about it. So, does anyone really know if a hurricane hit Florida? Has DeSantis arrested anyone who made mention of it?

Turned off the feed after 5 minutes. If it wasn't for this hockey game, these announcers would be doing a high school chess match- fugging horrible.⁷

I admit I have failed to keep up with the Diamond Sports saga and the bankruptcy. Does anyone know of Bally Sports South is carrying the Canes again this season?

Will the national media admit they were wrong?
Anybodyhome replied to Dorian Gray's topic in Carolina Panthers
When was the last time anyone heard the media call an NFL QB "bad?" They've had bad games, bad mechanics, bad reads, etc., but when has the media ever said someone was just not a good QB? That being said, the Panthers organization is still a fugging trainwreck with Tepper at the controls. Canales, Dan Morgan, whoever is brought in, Tepper will find a way to fug it up. And it only compounded and exponentially made things worse by drafting a bad QB. A bad organization did not make BY a bad QB. Nor did BY being a bad QB make this organization suck. Keep the 2 separate, please. -
Why would you want to follow-up a BY sh!tshow with another sh!tshow in Sanders?

https://sports.yahoo.com/win-battle-7th-defensemen-spot-162510102.html As the case with many teams in the NHL, there are positions up for grabs with players fighting for the last couple of spots on the 23 man roster. In Carolina, one area that is pretty much set is the top 6 defensemen on the roster. When the Carolina Hurricanes open the season on October 11th against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning it is no secret that the starting six defenders will be Jaccob Slavin, Brent Burns, Dmitry Orlov, Sean Walker, Shayne Gostisbehere and Jalen Chatfield. The 7th spot however, is a different story. Amongst the defensemen in the mix for that 7th spot are Riley Stillman, Ty Smith and one of the Hurricanes top prospects in Scott Morrow. Stillman, 26, was signed by the Hurricanes on July 3rd and could be one of the leading candidates to earn the role of being the Canes 7th defender. Last year Stillman played in 47 games for the Buffalo Sabres AHL affiliate in the Rochester Americans. While Stillman did not play a game in the NHL last season, he does have 158 games of NHL experience split between the Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and the Buffalo Sabres. Stillman is known for playing a simple game and is more than capable of stepping into the lineup when called upon. If head coach Rod Brind'Amour wants his 7th defenseman as someone who can skate well and move the puck, Ty Smith could very well fit that bill. Smith came to the Hurricanes in the Jake Guentzel trade but did not suit up for the Hurricanes. Like Stillman, Smith did not play a game in the NHL last year, as he spent the whole season in the American league where he led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in scoring with 43 points in 63 games. Smiths' career started off with much promise after he scored 23 points in only 48 games with the New Jersey Devils in his first season. At only still being 24-years-old, Smith will look to show he belongs on a NHL roster in camp. The last potential option and the one with the most upside is Scott Morrow. Morrow was selected in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft by the Hurricanes and is the Hurricanes 2nd best defensive prospect behind Alexander Nikishin, who could arrive from the KHL as soon as this season. Morrow turned pro last season for a quick cup of coffee in the NHL when he played two games for Carolina after finishing up his collegiate career playing for UMass-Amherst for the last three seasons. Last year in his Junior season, Morrow led the Minuteman in scoring with tallying 30 points in 37 games played. While there is no doubt that Morrows' future long-term will certainly be with Carolina, there is a possibility that Rod Brind'Amour and his staff would rather Morrow further develop by logging a lot of minutes for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL rather than by sitting in the press box on most nights as the teams 7th defenseman.

Can Hockey Season Hurry Up Already?
Anybodyhome replied to PantherChris's topic in Carolina Hurricanes
I don't even like to compare the 2 sports any more. It doesn't make sense. Football is a 17 game season and a team needs to win 3 or 4 games to play for the championship. Hockey is 82 games and a team getting to the Cup final needs to win 16 of 28 possible games. The Stanley Cup is the most difficult championship to win and appreciating a team that, at least, puts itself in a position to contend is enough to have my fan commitment. -
89 should be in considering there are 20 other WRs who, statistically, rank below Smith yet own gold jackets.

Worse To Watch: Jimmy Clausen Era or Bryce Young Era?
Anybodyhome replied to PantherBoy95's topic in Carolina Panthers
Clausen was 1-9 as a starting QB. And, remember, he had nobody behind him. Tony Pike, Brian St.Pierre, Armanti Edwards was converted from a college QB, but wasn't ready for the NFL as a QB. This version of Carolina is simply refusing to put players on the field who give them "the best chance to win." Andy Dalton obviously gives the Panthers a better chance to win. -
Gonna need a bigger sign.

Yeah. Bang-bang with seconds on the clock and, without a slo-mo replay, nobody makes that call.
-
The officials have directly accounted for the Chiefs winning a Super Bowl, an AFC Championship and more than a couple regular season games by making questionable calls at the end of the game. Today was no different, should have been a no-call. Let the players determine the outcome, not the refs.

Panic only afflicts those who give an actual fug about this team.
