I THINK they will trade Darnold for a fifth rounder or so--maybe after or during preseason. The Panthers should eat the salary (most of it) because they will be paying a distraction who is not contributing if they do not. I'd rather go with Corral as the backup.
-
People against this trade just don't like Mayfield or they think the hope that Matt Corral is the second coming is legit. You give yourself options and you develop Corral properly. If Corral shows he has what it takes by the end of the year, the Panthers will know it. If Baker shines and gets a a contract here, Corral is still an asset. I imagine the Panthers are looking to give Darnold away in a trade right now--if they could get a fourth or fifth rounder and eat the salary, it would be a win.

We literally lost most games in the third quarter--and the third quarter is the best measure of a coach.
-
If you look at contracts, there is a likelihood that Corral is the 2023 starter.
-
Now trade Darnold for a fifth and eat $15m in salary

Players develop differently--Josh Norman was a headcase until year 3 or 4.

Big Ten and SEC fixing to dismantle the ACC?
MHS831 replied to Squirrel's topic in Carolina Panthers
forget college sports--think of the reason colleges have athletic programs to begin with-- I do not think it was ever intended that athletes would represent colleges that they never get into otherwise. I do not think it was ever supposed to be about big time TV contracts and 100K seat stadiums that serve as the minor league of the NFL. If you want to know how bad it is, consider that (before endorsements) the top football coaching salary in the NCAA (Riley, USC) is 10 TIMES HIGHER than the TOP University Chancellor (Univ of Kentucky) in the US. It really is not college athletics anymore--it is a group of athletes that wear university colors and they play sports to raise money for the university. It is way out of hand, and since we love it, we let it go. They now have free agency (Portal) and athletes can be paid endorsements--in college. So when they end the local rivalries and find academic loopholes to keep athletes enrolled (for example, the African American Studies major at UNC or the fact that Duke basketball players are usually fully enrolled in summer courses at NC Central) Does it really matter which college's name is on the jersey? I mean, these are not, for the most part, student-athletes--they are guys that a college recruiter could convince to attend so that they can promote themselves for three years and hopefully enter the NFL. -
1. Most Improved (defense) DE YGM. Year 3 will be a charm, he will have expectations and opportunity. Hardy and Charles Johnson were nothing until year 3. (Offense) WR Terrace Marshall. Expect him to steal snaps from Anderson by year's end. I also expect OL Brady Christensen to be in this conversation. 2. Performance drop king (defense) CB CJ Henderson. This is really based on hype and expectations--I think he confirms his busthood this year. (Offense) RB Chuba Hubbard. I think he will get fewer and fewer reps and will be eventually cut if CMC stays healthy.

That is what it is. "Now that we have ditched the Wishbone offense they ran at Oklahoma in the 70s..."

Matt Corral: The Biggest Underdog in The NFL
MHS831 replied to Ivan The Awesome's topic in Carolina Panthers
I hope we start him when he is ready, not when we need him because we are out of options. I think you would agree with that. -
Matt Corral: The Biggest Underdog in The NFL

Frankly, if he attended a rich LA high school with a $40K per year tuition and he didn't beat up some snarky, entitled, rich snob, I would be disappointed. -
Matt Corral: The Biggest Underdog in The NFL
MHS831 replied to Ivan The Awesome's topic in Carolina Panthers
We got a steal in the third--a diamond in the rough. Considering our needs, we could not have had a better draft. MC needs to be brought along, however, so it is up to our coaching staff to close the deal. McAdoo will make or break his career with Corral. We KNOW this--MC will be our starting QB no later than 2023. -
Another Mayfield Trade Thread... How about a 3 Way?

Nothing wrong with a 1-way. -

Sheena Quick on Baker Mayfield to Panthers trade

Isn't Sheena wrong more than she is correct? It seems I have seen her aim and miss a lot. -
How much would you trade for Baker for 1 year rental?
MHS831 replied to Cam's New Arm's topic in Carolina Panthers
And I see your argument--Darnold has never had a line, and it shows. However, I see where people think Mayfield had more upside--we will probably see---but if Mayfield plays well-do you pay him $200m for 5 years? Baker Passer rating in 2021: 83 Darnold Passer rating in 2021: 72 So to support your point, even injured, Baker did better--but he did have a better OL. To me, the OL is the difference maker as much as the QB. We were HORRIBLE last year up the middle. -

MHS831 replied to Cam's New Arm's topic in Carolina Panthers
I am not sure Baker gives us the best chance to win now. His 2021 play paralleled Darnold's. Darnold has been sharp and determined in camp (I know--the bullets aren't flying yet). And Corral is on deck. Baker gives Corral little to no hope of seeing the field in 2022--so if he does not play, how do we evaluate him entering the 2023 draft? In my opinion, you do not build by bringing in rentals that bury your developmental players. -
Before the draft, I was for it, but now? Not so much. While I am not a big fan of throwing a third round rookie under center, I am more inclined to do that than bring in this guy. I believe in team chemistry, something some do not value because it is not a Madden feature.

As much as many of you want Ickey to be the LT, BC was playing pretty well there the last 3 games. But I will add that no NFL coach is going to crown a rookie the starter after a few weeks in t shirts and shorts.

He'll be lucky to be the #3 WR

We spent 2 years to prove the coach needed developing-not the team. Rhule's adherence to college coaches and the way he allowed Baylor/Temple players to occupy 15% of the roster were red flags. Then when Brady got figured out and he had no answers... Now he has hired some NFL coaches and lost some of the control Tepper gave him--so if he is better by subtraction, I guess that is improvement.
