Kaye: Panthers not likely to be "sellers" at trade deadline
MHS831 replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I think a pass rusher would be hard to get--so I have not mentioned it. i also think that our two young OLBs are showing some signs. It is tough to figure out. Is it scheme? Are we predictable? However, I don't see us upgrading by adding a Reddick (sheer luck) by next week. -

I see that, but my focus is broader, which changes the logic (unless I am missing something here). If you like Rico and trade Hubbard, you don't have to let Rico go--you could sign him, have Etienne and Brooks and maybe even a late round draft pick--but you get an ILB, which is our biggest weakness--which is my point. If you isolate your focus on RB only and you focus on next year, it makes little sense to trade Hubbard--to me, you upgrade LB right now and you have RBs. I think we are constantly in rebuild or build mode, we don't think like those seeking rings. What helps us more--(and I am not sure about Hubbard's trade value, which was part of your point)--a backup RB (solid but still a backup right now) or a starting ILB? Which player fills our needs? So I could argue your point, but there are other perspectives that should be considered if you broaden the scope. It is not a no-brainer--lotta variables. -

A good GM is always looking to upgrade the roster--a fire sale? No. But if there is a LB there who can tackle and cover.... I would argue that the WR room looks solid and is not expensive right now. The OL is probably not an area to tinker with. RB? I am a believer in the premise that you do not give RBs lucrative second contracts in most cases--so if we can trade a Hubbard to get a decent LB---I say, YUP. We ride the Rico hot hand, Etienne is a good reserve, and Brooks MIGHT be able to play in 2026. Smart move to lose a little and gain a lot. -
damn. I thought my idea was original)

I was not engaged at that time, and I looked up and saw the close up. He did seem out of place, and I wondered why he did not get out of the way-- Great point--was it a direct snap and Chuba missed the call...?
-
My concerns? XL still doesn't understand the concept of a sideline and he has yet to break out in year 3...I think it was (according to the announcer) Corbett at center who hit Chuba in the arm with the snap--I was away, but not sure why he was at C. Our LB play was terrible. Buffalo messed with them all day--they seemed confused. Not sure what our DL was doing. And safeties missed a ton of tackles that led to big plays. I did not watch that closely, but it seems Coker should be the #2.

I agree with you--but I was not implying that he threw the game--he is bad enough to play and not have to compromise his integrity.

Interception to a guy five feet away, fumble on a key drive, drive killing and TD screwing passes, taking a sack when rookies know to get rid of the ball---Giving away plays at the LOS-- Andy Dalton alone has cost the Panthers at least 14 points and has give Buffalo 6.

But what about the over/under? (Kidding--but this is telling)

It is really difficult...Darnold and Baker did not get good, the found a system and supporting cast...Traditionally, we do not have a system in which QBs tend to prosper. I don't like having a QB room that is not competitive. In my view, you draft a QB and then you keep trying to beat him out with newer qbs...when they cost $240m, you do not settle by paying a mediocre qb that kinda money. You find a qb you'd gladly pay that much for.
-
ANd you have to look at the financials--he will be in line for a $50m per contract--we can't be on the fence then. Here is the rub. For Bryce to be good, you need an elite OL, solid RB (s), and quite an investment at WR. Best to have a D that keeps the opposition under 21 points per game. Not sure we can afford a mediocre qb who is not dual threat and completes a low percentage of passes that are usually pretty short. His processing is not quick. His arm is not average. He is not an alpha.
-
Not that I am frequently right, but I wanted Jones. The scheme and supporting cast makes all the difference.

Corbett is almost 30, oft-injured, and sucks in pass pro--with a 5'9" QB, we need better. I don't understand the Corbett love, frankly.
-
He has done nothing but improve every year and he can play anywhere. In my view, average vs the pass and good at run blocking--make this guy your starting center and give him a contract. he is 26- could be our center for the next 5-7 years.
-
He was last year too.

Best RB tandem in Panther history (at least for a few weeks)

Bryce played behind 3 subs on the OL--hats off to him and Dowdle. Hats off to BC, Nijman, and Mays. Bryce had a TE out, Coker was out, and TMac gave the Cowboys a pick that led to a TD. Bryce needs a running game. The DL seems to be coming together. I think the S play was bad and the LBs are who they are. I am not a Bryce fan yet, but his last 2 games have me on the fence when I was leaning towards the tar and pitchfork crowd . hoping for the best.
