So since you thought of one example, we are to apply that logic to all similar situations? Legette has not caught a pass in the NFL. Why not berate him for that. The bum.

Good post. I expect Thielen's numbers to drop--and that means the ball is going elsewhere. XL is a YAC guy and he should be a red zone threat. Johnson has averaged about 900 yards over the past 3 seasons with Pickett and Co. at QB and he was not the X. Expect 1000+ yards. I will guess that we should be able to get 750 or so from Legette. I also think they will use the TE more, Otton was not spectacular in Tampa but he had over 400 yards--more than all Panther TEs combined.
-
If you look at the big picture--Johnson, new OL, new scheme--yes, there will be noticeable improvement. We could really use a TE, but I think Tremble is about to break out in that role-he was not used that well before.
-
When Morgan says "Dawg" he has to be referring to ILBs first and foremost--Davis, Beason, Mills, Morgan, Luke--when we have been good, we have had "Dawgs" in the middle. It seems pretty likely that all the "Dawg" ILBs (Colson, Wilson, and Cooper) will be gone by 65. There will still be CBs available at 65--or a second WR. So I think Morgan goes LB at 39.
-
On my board/mock I have Tennessee taking him at 38. However, someone has to fall. Here is my up-to-date mock--I was giddy after this.
-
Dan Morgan? Come on out. We know you're in there.
-
But you didn't say 32---so close!!!
-
I am of the mindset that they will draft Edgerrin Cooper or Payton WIlson at 39. Then they might attempt to move up for a CB by the end of the round--not sure, obviously. If the CB from Iowa is somehow there at 39, that could change things.

Why the Panthers drafted Xavier Legette

Premature about both Mingo and Legette. -
Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1

Um, yes you do. Isn't saying they drafted "for development" a case of you putting words in my mouth? Aren't you assuming that "developmental" means that he can't contribute from day 1? There is no recipe for drafting players; if you could bottle it, I am sure all GMs would buy it-you are pretending to know what nobody knows. That said, Name a player in this draft who was available at 32 who does not need development? But to assume that I understand your intent--you think that drafting raw talent with limited experience is not as good as someone who has demonstrated their full potential, correct? With that, the term "ceiling" is applicable, and you are saying that a player with a limited ceiling (because their skills were measurable and nobody drafted them until 32) is more valuable than a player with a higher ceiling. The draft is mining for talent, and diamonds do not come out of the mine already cut and set in gold. Coach em up. -

I have been down on Campen for months--I wanted to see growth from Ekwonu, BC, Mays, Zavala--they got worse. And bringing in a bunch of name brand, 70-year old coaches last year was impressive, but they are not effective teachers any more--Not sure they can relate to Gen Z players like younger people can. -

I think we are going to double dip at WR. Maybe someone like Rice or Corley? -

He lost his mother in 2015 and his dad in 2019--if you have ever had that happen to you, it messes with your head. I lost both my parents unexpectedly when they were in their fifties. It messes with your head and takes a long time to emotionally overcome. When he was in high school playing QB, his mother was dying. In College, his father passes. Yet he still worked to improve and when the demons left his head, he showed us what he can do--a snapshot, but I think being "home" in the NFL (near his family) is very important to him. If he'd gone to Kansas City or Seattle, I am not sure it would have been good for him. He seems like a good dude because he has been humbled. Now, at games, his remaining family will be there--that is huge to someone like him. I expect good things. -
Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1

Here is a point that few seem to value. The coaching staff last season, for the most part, was the "dream team" of sorts, a bunch of older guys resting on their laurels. What happens when you reach that point is you start leaning on your experience and you want to stay on the horse that brung you-less willing to accept newfangled concepts or adapt with the changing dynamics of the league. With the exception of Evero, we were dinosaurs. Canales has a young staff and he preaches coaching. Even with Andy Dalton, the first day was going through basic QB mechanics. He said he does not want to see coaches standing watching drills with their arms folded, meaning that he wants them to be teaching during the drills. Bryce commented about Corbett--"Even on IR, he asks more questions than anyone else." In the past, our players have not developed after drafting them, so I get the cynicism. However, I think this is a new day, based on these tea leaves. Positivity, teaching, learning--the culture has been toxic and many of us are poisoned with negativity. The draft is mining for talent--and you draft for 4-5 years. We talk about "developmental" and "upside" but if the player is not up to your high level of standards, you want to bury him before day 1. Part of being around a toxic culture. -

I am not sure how they will use Legette. First, people are disregarding the new KO rules and how he might play out on special teams. Secondly, he is known for contested catches and crossing routes--I see him in motion quite a bit, based on that skill set. -
Panthers Select Xavier Legette WR - Pick 32, Round 1

Buffalo was in need of a WR, and after Pearsall was drafted, the Panthers may have figured that a team needing a WR (like the Panthers, for example) could trade up with Buffalo to get the fifth year option at the end of the first round. Look at the teams picking early in the second round and look at the big board. There is going to be a run on WRs. This not only provided the Panthers with the fifth-year option, but it assured them that nobody was going to deal with Buffalo, and Buffalo was not going to take Legette. So Bean decided to upgrade his day three sixth rounder to a fifth, and Morgan got his guy and the fifth year option. Win Win. Obviously Buffalo was open for business, so if you consider the fact that Buffalo might have been getting calls for the pick, Morgan switched places with Buffalo. It is likely that Buffalo did not want to drop farther than 33, so they dealt with Carolina--dealing with anyone else would risk losing Mitchell, the guy they probably covet (or Ladd). The ONLY team who was assured they are not going to lose their guy is Buffalo. I am not sure this deal goes down unless Morgan tells Bean who he was going to take and that Beane trusted Morgan's word. After pick 33.... Pick 34. New England needs a receiver. Pick 36. Washington needs a receiver. Pick 37. Chargers need multiple receivers. Pick 44. Raiders need a receiver. Pick 45. Saints need a receiver. The NFL Draft ESPN Big board for "Best Remaining" Players features 3 Wide Receivers in the next 7 picks. I am guessing that Buffalo wants Mitchell, and when the Panthers decided to go with Legette, they were willing to deal. -

I think Pearsall was always going higher but yes, the run on WRs is going to happen today--CBs too. However, the move that caused the Panthers to trade up was when Buffalo and KC switched positions. Morgan and Beane are friends and that deal was pretty generous. KC would not have surrendered the fifth year option, in all likelihood. -

WIthout having seen the offense yet--we can assume that, but most WRs have the same weaknesses transitioning from college to pros. I was avoiding Legette in my mocks, but they met with him quite a bit etc. They apparently did not want to lose him. -

What exactly is your point and what are you hoping to accomplish? So the team did not draft the guy you wanted? You think Ladd McConkey has no shortcomings? This post demonstrates how you are looking for anything you can to prove that you are all knowing and the Panther general manager and coach are dumb. Is that what you want? Instead of taking the position, "I have no idea how this might work out, fingers crossed." you have decided to go on a witch hunt. Not with you. I hope he balls out enough to cause you to change your username and profile pic. -

Showing his RAS score may not indicate an obsession. I got it off a Colts site and they all wanted Legette. I guess 2-15 darkens the perspectives of the fan base....I was actually reading an article last night (when we drafted Legette) about how the SF fans booed Jerry Rice his first season. -

Please direct me to the WR in this draft that was available at 32 who is not raw in some ways? We really traded up for the contract, not the person. If switching a fifth for a sixth bothers you, you are talking about 23.6 trade value points. Not a big deal. However, if he plays, we could save $15m or so on the fifth year option. It was smart, actually. All first rounders have strengths and weaknesses. Most WRs have never faced press man coverage, and they struggle to do so st first. He is 6'3" and 227--he will overcome it. And being a good athlete is not a crime, even if you are tired of it. -

He is a bit raw, and we may have motion him to keep him from strong press man coverage--Tennessee managed to contain him--he caught 5 balls for 50 yards. He was SC's only real threat, so he garnered a lot of attention in 2023. According to his RAS score, he is impressive. I think he will struggle at first, and they will experiment with how to use him. He is good at contested catches and crossing routes. -
