I have not looked into the specific players yet--but I will. From what I hear, he seems like a winner.

Trey Lance - best QB of this draft not named Lawrence
MHS831 replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
Do you know how many bad picks have been made when emotion and desperation are allowed to pervade logical and practical thinking? Picking the wrong QB is more of a setback than building until the right one becomes available. Enhanced film? I agree they should be able to figure it out, but they don't. Picking any QB is not the answer--picking the right QB and surrounding him with protections and weapons is important. Film does not measure some of the intangibles that separate a quarterback from a franchise QB. People dismiss the presence of the QB in the locker room--the film room--the practice field--etc. I doubt Teddy has a presence there. But I was not talking about Teddy--you were. -

Speed is a nice feature, but i do not value it as much as others when checking out QBs. Speed leads to running and running leads to injuries over the long haul. That is why I hated Rivera because I could see that he was wasting Cam to win games, at times, meaningless games. Such an overrated coach. -

Or trade back (remember Fitterer said he likes to do that, and that there is not much difference between pick 18 and 40 (or something close to that)... You make the OL better, you make whoever is playing QB better. Make the D better, and it changes the offensive strategy in some situations and it gets you the ball back more often. So yes, I see this as a better long-term strategy that going all in on a QB and getting fleeced of picks and talent that is hard to overcome. -
My humble point of view--and there are hundreds of ways to go here--- Get 2 good Guards. Sign a top-end CB. Congratulate yourselves for having a good free agency. Here is the reason I say this: We have 4 safeties with experience (if you do not count Chinn) They are Burris, Franklin, Hartsfield, and Robinson. Yes, we could add one here, but I am not sure we should yet. We need a #1 CB and let Pride and Jackson cover lesser WRs. That is our biggest need in the secondary--a #1 CB. Personally, I want Chinn at S, QB of the defense. I draft an OLB;SS hybrid to free him up some. Offensively, we signed Scott, feel that Daley can play LT--and I think we address OT later--but you do NOT want a rookie LT in that was drafted in round 2-3. They get torched. Secondly, you could move Moton to LT and play Scott/Daley at RT--then draft a LT later for depth. If we had 2 veteran guards and maybe a C in free agency, we could have a strong OL. If we grabbed a CB and 2 G's in the draft, then my board looks like this: 1. QB 2. WR 3 3. C 4. OLB 5. OT 6. CB, TE, DL I think, if Moton can switch to LT effectively, we could have a good OL with 2 free agent Guards. What about TE? Well, good point. A TE in my opinion is needed, but some "experts" seem to think that Brady does not use them much. The TE we signed in the offseason from Seattle was a converted WR at....LSU. Meanwhile, Rhule called free agent Manhertz one of the best TEs in football, and we signed Stevens, the hybrid QB/TE from New Orleans. I think we have a plan in place for TE..

He may be a great one day, but the wrong system could cost a lot of smart men their jobs. To be honest, that is how you really have to look at this: If my ass was on the line, would I take Lance in the top 10? Would I take Fields? Would I take Wilson after pulling a Bearish trade up only to find out that he is not the answer? What I want as a fan does not matter--would you take Lance if your ass was on the line? Now, having said that, the owner in Carolina is screaming QB, so I think you are going to get a QB--taking a lot of the guesswork out. -

We have many more options than people on the Huddle are willing to consider. They focus on one guy, then defend that guy come hell or high water, because they want to be right. But the more you dig, the more likely you are to find buried bodies. Personally, I am interested in QBs who are being trashed because they were in horrible systems--no OL, no WRs, etc. No QB can look good with that. People agree with that statement until I mention names--then they become Captain Hindsight and start saying, "He sucks." My point: "Well duh-have you seen his OL? WRs? Coach? So instead of forcing the issue by trading up for the fourth best gamble at QB and losing draft capital and players, I am not against a 1-year contract for a player who might prosper in a system where the OL is solid, WRs are on point, and the coach understands his strengths. Personally, I want to see who signs Trubiski. I want to see where Mariota and Darnold go. I think one or more will find a system to be reborn. -

Interesting point. Chris Weinke could not throw across his body (to his left) and the NFL learned that very quickly. I think he beat Minnesota for the opener and proceeded to lose 15 straight. -

This is why I am glad we had the head coach and GM there. Rhule values the cerebral players--players who can adapt to multiple positions, players that do not make mental mistakes. At the SR Bowl, he praised Jones for his processing. So if they leave NDSU with these questions answered, he could be the player we move up to grab. I wish he had more experience. The same people saying (about Jones) "Yeah, but he had a great team around him." should be saying that with Lance as well. I do not buy into that nonsense because if you have that great team and you perform at a high level, what were you supposed to do? The thing I like about Lance is this: He has the speed and running ability, but rarely do his feet move before he has made the decision not to throw. That (to me) reflects decisiveness--the QB has a clock, when the routes are not open, he snaps into run mode and the pass is not going to happen. With other running qbs, they tend to read while on the run, often throwing just before they cross the LOS. That creates problems for the WRs, OL, etc. Timing is off, linemen not knowing if they should block down field, and the throw is often less than accurate because the feet are not firmly planted to throw--usually all arm. Mahommes can do this, but I am not sure I want a 1 year, 20 year old kid from SDSU making those freelance (no pun) decisions in the NFL--at least not early on. -

welcome aboard. -
This is not a comparison between Jones and Lawrence---if it is, Jones had a better OL and WRs and he had the better numbers...So that does not prove Jones is not good. It proves that he did what he was supposed to do with a better team. 77.4% completions, 42 TDs, vs. 4 Ints. 349 yards per game--11.2 yards per pass attempt. Those numbers are as good or better than most all QBs--this year and many others. Those numbers are not average or even good--they are elite. So please tell me what numbers a great QB would have posted at Bama this year? Completion percentage: TDs in 13 games: Interceptions (13 games): Yards per game: Yards per attempted pass: Once we determine where the threshold for greatness is, maybe we can see this more objectively. I want to see what you think a great QB at Bama should have done this year.

I think we are going to use the cap to build the OL---and we should. I think other things too, but that is for another place and time.

3 hours ago, Cowherd: Not much here--except Cowherd kissing large market ass. -
But your argument is hypothetical. He had a great offense and he was a great QB. What else is he supposed to do? He completed nearly 80% of his passes. Some people don't do that at their pro days. He threw for 42 TDs vs. 4 Interceptions and Bama played as tough a schedule as anyone else. If he failed with the protection and weapons around him, this is a point. But he succeeded--better than Lawrence (who has a good supporting staff) and Burrow at LSU last year--(his team was pretty loaded). Not seeing that argument.

I was just joking and stoking. No hard feelings. I actually agree with most of your nonsense! -
So you are saying that he can be successful with a good team around him but without one, he is not going to be very good. How is that not true for all QBs?

That is what I have been saying, but they are sending the big boys (coach, GM) to these qb workouts. Are they bluffing? -

So basically, this is not a situation where 8 teams are going for 4 qbs. It is a situation where 10 teams are going after the remaining 2--possibly 3 QBs starting with the third pick. All picks will be given trade offers to move up. We will be sitting 6 picks out when Fields, Lance, Jones are atop nearly every board. Does a QB fall to us? Jones, probably. I doubt the other 2 do. What are the options? Trubiski is free agency. Watson in a trade. Trade up with Miami or Cincinnati. Never trade with a division rival, and make Atlanta choose between Fields and Lance--I bet they go Fields or they bail altogether and take the picks behind door #2. -

If we are going to get serious about a QB and they like Lance much more than Mac, and they probably should, we will trade up. Jags--Trevor Jets--Wilson Dolphins (wild card--smart to trade back, but they could love a player and that could be a QB. Trade for Watson? Who knows?) Atlanta--Fields or Lance (while I think taking a QB now is dumb, they have so many needs and a decent QB under contract) Cincinnati (another Wild Card--teams will be giving them a lot for the #5 spot if a top 5 QB is on the board) Philly--possibly taking a QB or would trade back Detroit--Possibly taking a QB or would trade back Denver (9) SF (12) NE (15) Washington (19) all could try to move up from where they are. (the picks are from memory--approximate) -

He was found (a few years after playing) living under a bridge in the Dallas area. He won the lottery TWICE--once it was $28m. One of the games he used coke--the Super Bowl vs. Pittsburgh. "Henderson did have one big play against Bradshaw, sacking him in the second quarter while linebacker Mike Hegman yanked the ball out and ran 37 yards for a touchdown. Bradshaw, though, had the last laugh, throwing for 318 yards and four touchdowns; he was named Super Bowl MVP. On the sidelines at the Orange Bowl that day, Henderson said he utilized a small spray bottle that contained a mixture of water and cocaine. “I had a deviated septum that was a bloody mess, and I had this big scab,” he said. “When you’re snorting (cocaine) pebbles up your nose, it’s going to hurt the lining of your nose. But I was only using the (the spray bottle) for medical purposes to ease the pain, not to get high.” There already had been plenty of that going on during Super Bowl week. “I’m in Miami, the headquarters of cocaine, and I was trying some new stuff,” Henderson said. “Some Colombian drug dealers were just giving me stuff. I had about four ounces on me when I got on the team plane to go back to Dallas after the game.” By the next season, Henderson’s antics and cocaine problems had worsened. Brandt said he confronted Henderson after he received an anonymous call about his drug use but that the linebacker denied it. This is a very interesting account of Hollywood Henderson: https://www.twincities.com/2018/01/28/hollywood-henderson-looks-back-at-wild-drug-addicted-super-bowl-days/
