Consistency is VERY important. For example, a QB can have 1 bad game every 4 games and make the playoffs/win a division. But if they do not get a first round bye, that bad game is going to cost them a Lombardi---every time. Look at NE--they have a lesser athlete--the fourth QB taken in the draft--and they are winning. Why? He is consistent, accurate, and smart.

You use stats when he plays well and blame others when he does not. So attack others when they disagree with you--at least you are consistent. My shoe size is twice what his QB rating was yesterday. Damn the GM-OL-WRs-Coach-weather-etc.

A QB needs to be consistent and accurate. He needs to make good decisions and put the ball where it needs to be when it needs to be there. Cam has never been that guy. The season we went 15-1, the defense played really well and we had a silly turnover advantage over opponents. We never put together back-to-back winning seasons when he was healthy and young. We are not a good football team, and Cam needs a good football team to be good.

The are going to play man and bring 6 or 7 on every play. The TE, CMC, and I expect to see 88 step up today--he will have their worst DB covering him. Cam can't hold the ball---and we need to run it. Screen passes are nice in this situation as well.

Hypothesis: Carter is a backup LB and his numbers prove it. Carter has 10 solo tackles over the last 5 games. He is playing Mike LB. To put that in perspective, Luke (and I am not saying he has to be Luke; this is to put his play into perspective only so you can see the difference) Luke averaged 6.4 solo tackles per game his Rookie season--Carter averages 2. Since returning from injury, Shaq Thompson has averaged 4.75 solo tackles per game. Jermaine has 54 combined tackles over 11 games this season (Luke had 164 combined tackles his rookie year), 29 over the last five games--about his average. Over 5 games then, rookie Luke would have had 32 solo tackles and 51 combined tackles. Your Mike needs to make tackles. I have added stats for Shaq Thompson's last 5 games (he was injured for a bit) to give greater insight: Solo tackles over 5 games: Carter 10, Thompson 23 (over his last five games), Rookie Luke 32 (average for 5 games) Combined tackles over last 5 games: Carter 29, Thompson 36, Rookie Luke 51 (average for 5 games) While Carter finds his way to assist tackles at a decent rate as indicated by his combined (assist + solo) stats, he is weak in the solo tackle area. Solo tackles often happen in space, and Jermaine is not making plays in space. For Carter to make tackles, he needs help. He is a gang tackler I guess you could say. I was talking to former Tar Heel, Miami Dolphin and Indy Colt Linebacker Dwight Hollier recently and he described tackling Barry Sanders in the open field. He went on to describe the art of tackling in the open field vs. in the fray on the line of scrimmage. He said that he just guessed with Sanders, and made the tackle because he guessed right. He said, "it is the test of who is the better athlete--mind and body--when you are tackling in the open field. I feared Sanders, so I guessed. That means I miss the tackle 50% of the time or even more. I got lucky." When I watch Carter, I see a person getting caught up in traffic, taking bad angles, and whiffing a lot in one-on-one situations. He is not terrible--for a backup he would be good. I have read people on the Huddle say that he is serviceable or doing OK. No, he really is not.

I still say LT in round 1 IF Cam is re-signed, which means that he played well. While Morgan, Beason, and Luke were first rounders, we were talking about possible free agents. I dunno, but I am a believer in that Alpha MLB--maybe just old school.

Of course, much like a pass rush and stuffing the run game helps DBs. But this defense gets gashed on occasion, and this franchise has valued MLB- Mills, Morgan, Beason, Keuchly--all ring of honor candidates. So I think positional value at MLB is important to any defense. Carter is playing below average, and well below the standard in Carolina. If you need statistics, Carter has 41 tackles this year. 4.1 tackles for a MLB is not solid. After 10 games, Morgan, Beason, Luke were usually in the 80 range. Donte Jackson, FWIW and to compare, has 33 tackles--nearly as many as our MLB. Carter's PFF rating (take it for what its worth, but you can use stats to defend him if you'd like) is 48.4. So I disagree. MLB needs to be addressed this offseason. 4 tackles per game is below average We need our MLB making 6-10 tackles per game.

You have to see the big picture, that is for sure. I agree. Everyone approaches this like a kid in a candy store, but Fitterererer has only so many nickels in his pocket.
