Or "dagger" depending on how it plays out. I am OK if we can steal Baker--not going to crucify him because he was not great with a bad shoulder--I am not going to crucify him if his emotions get away from him-I think in many ways that he is the answer to the problem--unless you love a QB this draft. Gonna be fun

No news from Panthers because the whole front office, scouts, and coaches were in Pittsburgh. I have been thinking, Huddlenation, and here is what I thunk: 1. The Falcons will not trade up for a QB with Mariota--they will not draft a QB in round 1 either--too many needs. 2. The Lions may enter the Mayfield sweepstake, so they are not taking a QB at #2. 3. The Eagles took Pickett to dinner. The Eagles have 3 picks in round 1 (15, 16, and 19), so they can have anyone they want if they are willing to pay. They seem to like Pickett. Would they give up #16 and #19 to trade up to #5 or #4? Unlikely that deal goes down for Pickett, but I think the Eagles are the biggest threat to getting Pickett away from Rhule and Co. 4. The Steelers share facilities with Pickett and they sorta need a QB, even though they have Trubiski. At pick 20, they do not have the muscle to get up to #5 or sooner. 5. So it seems that the Panthers could roll the dice, move back four or five spots, and still get any QB they want--assuming Atlanta is happy with Mariota and Philly does not make a move.

Pickett already is a Panther

Philly likes Willis and they have the picks to move up...could they be that desperate? If so, why not give us Mishew and swap first rounders? Just a thought. Saw that idea nowhere but in my head. If they want to trade up to the giants to leapfrog the Panthers, it would take the 16th and 20th (approx--going from memory) picks--so they would still have 2 first rounders after that deal--#5 and #15. Philly took Pickett to dinner, the way I understand it.

and no QBs... Hmmmm.

If we'd sign a T or a QB I think we'd have a better idea about the draft.

I think Howell could be the best of the bunch when all is said and done. He has many of the same skills. I am not a good evaluator of QB talent. Some of my highlights: 1. I laughed at KC when they drafted Mahommes. 2. I thought Hurney's visit to Oregon's pro day to watch Herbert was a smokescreen (since the only QB from Oregon who was ever worth a damn was Dan Fouts) 3. I thought Josh Allen was a bust waiting to happen. 4. Back in the day, I could not decide between Ryan Leaf and Manning--I grew up a Colt fan. So my eye for QB talent is abysmal.

That is the way it was Friday as well. I am glued to the computer.

He scares me (as they all do), Dave, but I see the potential to be good in him. His mechanics are very good, he sees the field well, and he is a good athlete that can run if he needs to do so. I am blinded by the propaganda that is out there about him, and the small hands bother me in the rain and cold--but he played outdoors in Pittsburgh. Those who call him a "one hit wonder" are discounting the work he has obviously done to make the most of his abilities. I am a buyer, considering the options. Best about him: Footwork and release Concerns: Hand size (because it matters a bit)

The Browns need to know that we are not going to eat the salary. An even trade for QBs--both at the same salary on fifth year deals--gives the Browns a backup in Darnold and Baker to the Panthers. We still draft a QB... All we are doing is giving the Browns a QB who is not butt hurt and we are taking a problem off their hands. We could throw in a seventh rounder to make them feel better.

Just dawned on me--do we really want a QB with "pick 6"?
-
I had the exact same thought, Dave. I think we are going to draft Pickett. We could have gone after Baker (no), Jimmy G (no), Minshew (no)--not a lot of options left. If we are certain, then sign the LT and lets roll em.
-
some of us called that one--since Atlanta picks #8, that means that it is unlikely they will attempt to leapfrog us for a QB in the draft---it would have cost them a third and fourth rounder to do so, fwiw.

If we got him, he'd be on a 1-year contract ($18.8m) and we could let him go if he sucked. We would then be drafting a QB in the 2023 draft. If we draft Pickett and he sucks, we are on the hook for 4 years. So there is an upside to Mayfield. He has played well when not injured and he is effective when he has time. I am not sure about his maturity and leadership---but he comes off like a prick to me, and that is problematic if you are a QB.

Is it legal to let some air out of these things if you don't play for the Patriots?
