Where do you stand right now? I have no idea where the Huddle stands. Try to keep Homerism out of it.

Most of us want a less-meddling owner. Maybe he is doing that.

Rhule: Sam Darnold will take a huge step this year
MHS831 replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
Why didn't he think of this LAST year? -
Yes. This is what will happen.
-
Come to think of it, I have never seen Zod and Rhule in the same room at the same time. I think you are right, but I also think that if Detroit or Houston takes him in the first three picks, it could cause some trade ups. If he goes fifth (I firmly believe the Giants will trade out and there could be a player--maybe Seattle) moving up for Willis. On the other hand, Willis may not be worth the cost to trade up to #5, so he team that gets him could have him fall into their laps. That could be Carolina at 6. Would we take Willis, or would we trade back and take a Corral + picks? Interesting--I would trade back.

If you want to legitimately criticize Howell, you should criticize the fact (along with Corral) that he ran a lot of RPO plays. That means you have one read and if it is not open, you run the ball. No three reads and then dump to the outlet. His release is not as quick as Pickett or Corral's, but it is as quick as Willis' release. Those are legitimate, specific, REASONS for concerns over him--not "Well, the Tar Heels had a bad year and Howell sucks." Might as well write "idiot" on your forehead with a Sharpie.

The people who are calling Howell a loser--a bust--are talking out of their asses. He was in a bad situation last year and his numbers did not drop off that much, compared to his peers who were in good situations (Ole Miss, Liberty, Pitt)--so in a way, we are comparing Apples and Oranges. Howell did not suddenly get bad--he reinvented himself to adapt to a lack of talent. Having played on winning and losing teams, I can tell you that I was always better on the winning teams. But some want to call him a hack because they do not understand the game as much as they think. I do not think these QBs this year are that far off from last year's group-they simply do not have the hype. In 10 years, you might still be watching Willis, Pickett, and Corral etc. on TV when you have to Google names like Lance, Wilson and Fields to remember them. It is possible. Howell would make me feel better if we traded back. The losing season and his numbers are not first round materials, but his skills are--so if you can get him and put him in a good situation, I think he can do well in time.

Like they weren't impressed with Tom Brady? Joe Montana? Russell Wilson? like that? Or like they were impressed with Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell? Which is it?
-
I love Walker--and I see it. If he goes #1, then Hutchinson at #2...Neal could fall to us---but I am guessing the Jets would take him at #4 and spend the rest of the draft on defense.
-
Pickett's small hands may have hurt his stock.
-
Here is what I do not understand about all these people calling these QBs hot garbage--- Compare Pickett to Mac Jones coming out of Bama--do you pick Jones? Compare Willis to Trey Lance--what makes Lance worth the #3 overall pick and Willis a second rounder? Compare Corral with Fields--is Fields really that much better, considering the weapons he had at Ohio State? What makes these three (this year) not first rounders and everyone was screaming "Best QB class ever" just last year?

Bet he talks when he needs a new stadium
-
They were there today and the announcers mentioned Tomlin wanting to see him--so Howell is going to put on a second passing exhibition

Since nobody asked me by popular demand, I will go ahead and tell what I think as I ponder with my brain the first round: 1. Jags: Evan Neal OT Alabama 2. Detroit Hutchinson DE Michigan. 3. Houston DE Trayvon Walker UGA 4. Jets-- Hamilton S Notre Dame. 5. Giants--TRADE w SEATTLE (for #9)--The Giants want to take NC State's OT Ekwonu, but they figured that the next two picks might be QB, so they trade back a bit. Seattle takes QB Willis Liberty 6. Panthers --TRADE w EAGLES (#6 pick, fourth round pick to Eagles for pick #16, 19) CB Sauce Gardner Cincinnati 7. Giants-- T Ekwonu NC State 8. Falcons-- WR Wilson Ohio State 9. Giants-- (from Seattle): Thibodeaux DE Oregon 10. Jets-- Jermaine Johnson DE/Edge Florida St 11. Commanders-- Derek Stingley Jr. CB LSU 12. Vikings -- Jordan Davis, DT UGa 13. Texans--Trent McDuffie, CB Washington 14. Ravens-- Devonte Wyatt DT UGa 15. Eagles-- Drake London, WR, USC 16. Panthers-- (from Eagles) Charles Cross, OT Miss St 17. Chargers-- Devin Lloyd, LB Utah 18. Saints-- Kenny Pickett, QB Pitt 19. Panthers-- (from Eagles) Matt Corral, QB Ole Miss 20. Pittsburgh-- George Karlaftis Edge Purdue

Or if you hate the heels so much that anything positive about them is perceived as hype or exaggeration.
-
Honestly--I think he comes into play as early as #18 (New Orleans) and #20 (Pittsburgh) I think it is unlikely he passes the Lions after that (#32 and #34) IF they do not take Willis at #2. If Ridder is rated higher than Howell, however, Howell could drop into round 2. There is no way he slips into round 3---I guarantee it. I think there is a deliberate effort by Tar Heel haters to discredit all that is UNC and there are UNC fans that promote all that is UNC--once you cut through that crap, you will find Howell to be worthy of late first round consideration, but likely an early second round pick.
-
And you will disappear if he goes in the late first. I see the Lions at 32 or 34 taking him--

The NFL Draft hats are out now. Thoughts?

It should come with a tissue dispenser and some ear plugs to drown out the laughter. -
Matt Rhule dresses like a goddamn slob

Caring not. -
This is football, not Jeopardy. Cam was losing behind the same line with the same WRs Sam won 4 games behind. Cam was like 0-5. How did that "between the ears" help him? So when you argue in hypothetical points that cannot be backed up with reasonable facts, you run the risk of sounding biased. I suggest that you are allowing your bias to make statements that you cannot verify.

Here is how I saw it (copied from a thread in the NFL Draft segment) So I watched Howell's pro day and I was impressed. EJ Manual (Florida State around 2010-Buffalo Bills QB) seemed impressed with a lot of Howell's throws. There was a meeting that caused head coaches to miss this pro day, so Howell is going to do another one. The thing I like about Howell is his cool. He does not get rattled. He looked good under the simulated center---he can pass from the pocket, on the run, against his body, etc. and he is accurate with good velocity. I was impressed with his footwork from under center. He does not have the quick release you see with Pickett or Corral, but he throws it 30 yards on a rope with no effort. Looked like he flicked it 30 yards. Comparisons: The panel of ACC commentators compared Howell to Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, and Steve Young. (I know). Coach Mack Brown compared him to other players he has coached--and he came up with Colt McCoy. I did not see a Panther rep in the crowd, but there was a conflict for coaches. I can say that all 32 teams were present, but I saw multiple Steelers (pick 20) and Lions (pick 32) coaches standing behind him. There was a comment about how Tomlin wanted to be there-- Frankly: I cannot see that much difference between my top 4 QBs (I have not seen Ridder yet). If we like Howell, it could be a trade back to about 12-18 and grab Howell. Measurables: Hand--9 1/8, height: 6 ft. weight: 224

On the ACC network, they said Howell is going to throw again for people who could not make it due to the conflict. Tomlin was mentioned as someone who wanted to be there.

There was a required meeting for NFL coaches and some executives.
