Why is mediocrity so attractive?
JawnyBlaze replied to Ivan The Awesome's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’d rather go 0-17 next year with a new HC that will grow and improve than 7-10 for the next five years before we start looking for another HC. I’ve seen enough of what he’s done in the past here as DC, secondary coach and HC this year to know that the chances of him all of a sudden learning how to put games away are slim to none. Not to mention keeping Holcomb as DC if he stays is its own recipe for disaster. -
Why is mediocrity so attractive?

It’s not hard to use the defenses he has led in the past combined with his job leading the team this year to determine his future tendencies will be the same. He called conservative soft defenses (for defensive units stacked with talent). And he’s not considered conservative because we shifted to a run first team, that was smart because our line and rbs were better than the qb. He’s conservative because of the decisions he made in the game. Not going for it on 4th down when he should, coaching not to lose, taking his foot off the gas, etc. We’ve seen this movie before and it leads to mediocrity. -

All Wilks accomplished was being better than Rhule. That’s not impressive. This wasn’t a 3-14 roster, he was a 3-14 coach. Wilks is a 9-8 coach at best. -

6-6 with this roster isn’t “good”, it’s mediocre like Ivan said. “Good” would have been beating the Bucs and not getting blanked by the Ravens (a tough but winnable game). I can understand losing to the Bengals but most of the rest of the games were winnable. Getting embarrassed by the Steelers and Bucs and Ravens was inexcusable. The only moderately impressive wins we had was the first game against the Bucs and the Lions. Beating the Broncos and Seahawks, etc wasn’t all that impressive. -
If we get a good offensive HC then I’m ok with any of the top four QBs.

As well as YGM (yawn) and Chinn. Even with all that loss, Burrow is a stud so I’d probably have to be reluctantly ok with it. I’d have flipped my poo at the time though

New Coach Thread 2: Electric Boogaloo
JawnyBlaze replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
Side commentary made me laugh. Bravo -
I like Miller, Abanikanda and the guy from Texas, Bijan something. Any of them in the 4th or so would be good. Miller is probably my preference

In regards to waiting and not trading up, taking the second or third TE, I just want to get the best possible players, we have lots of “good” players, we don’t have that many big needs, I’d rather use a couple picks to move up and take the best possible player at a position. In this case I’d rather have a quarter than three dimes when there’s only so many players on the field at a time. Especially when one of the picks isn’t one of our originals but one we got in a trade package.

I’m guessing Edge rusher

Steichen and Stroud

So we’ve discussed which QB we should take in the first. I was thinking about what we should do in the second assuming we get an offensive minded HC, don’t trade up in the first and have to settle for Richardson or Levis. We have #s 39 and 60 in the second. A guy that’s been mentioned around here some that I’m enamored with is Michael Mayer. The chances are pretty low he’ll be available at 39 so I was thinking about the idea of trading up to the mid 20s with our two second round picks. What do you guys think? Would our two seconds be enough to go high enough to get him? Some mocks I’ve seen him as high as 15 but most are in the 25-28 range. Would you love that move or just really like it? I’d love it. What if some team falls in love and takes him in the top ten or so, what about trading our second and a third or something to move up to 30 or 31 for the second TE? I’ve been thinking we’re primed to move up from 39 into the bottom of the first to take someone that could make an immediate impact, like a blue chip TE. Is there anyone you guys would wanna make that move for if Mayer is gone?

These trainings aren’t pointless. I did 20 in the navy and we had 10 or so similar trainings every year across various topics (the same thing every year for 20 years is excessive, but these one time trainings aren’t too much). You never know how some people are raised or the environment they learned from, something that’s common sense to most might not be to someone and you don’t want that someone making decisions that might be lacking in what most would think is obvious, like you can’t exclude someone based on race, gender, etc. So these trainings are important for establishing a baseline of what’s expected and setting a minimum standard for how things are expected to be done. What’s stupid is thinking this minor oversight on a brand new requirement is some big deal. It’s a nothing burger, they were informed months ago and subsequently forgot about it among the million other things they have to consider in owning a team among other business responsibilities. They’ll learn from it and move on.

People seem to be sleeping on Mike Kafka as a candidate
JawnyBlaze replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
He’s mostly flown under my radar, I’ve heard him mentioned but not much details. I’d be fine with him -
Go on record now before the hire is made Re: Sean Payton
JawnyBlaze replied to GOAT's topic in Carolina Panthers
Wut? People would quit being fans over Sean Payton? Jfc. I can understand not liking the guy but I could understand quitting if it was Wilks more than Payton. I could understand being sent over the edge by the prospect of more years of the same old same old, but not cuz the new Super Bowl winning coach has a douchey face and had a bounty program once upon a time. -
As much as I can’t stand Brady, what I’d hate the worst is the bad calls that would still be going his way and any wins would come with the same stink as that gifted trophy from a few years ago. Obviously I’ll take a trophy but damn I’d rather to do it fairly.

Ugh. Hoping for Steichen now.

For those who ARE interested in Sean Payton...

(I’m not one of the ones saying Payton was only successful because of Brees for the record, I think he was one of the best coaches in the league) -

No one says Cam was as great as Brees and Brady. He was certainly elite, and did more with less than almost anyone (especially with the trash coaching), but he wasn’t a sure fire first round lock HoF and top 10 all time QB like those two were. I dunno why you say Cam being less than the other two means Rivera is better than the other two. That logic doesn’t add up. Rivera: 0 rings, Payton: 1 ring with far less talent on the defense than Rivera had and not a ton on offense, Belichick: many rings with less talent than Rivera had on defense and not a ton on offense. -
Roman Harper thinks Sean Payton could be our next HC now
JawnyBlaze replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
He’s a winner, a great offensive mind and a really good coach. Yea he’s a douchebag, but I’d rather have a “douchebag” that sticks by his players than a “nice guy” like Rivera who throws his players under the bus and doesn’t have their back. My only sticking point is having to give up a first for him. That’s a hard pass for me, if the choice is Ben Johnson and Stroud (using next year’s first to move up for him) or Payton and Richardson at #9, I’m taking the former. -
1/17 Athletic/Brugler Mock: Panthers Trade Up
JawnyBlaze replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
Oh I musta misread. Thought it was ludicrous they were interviewing him for HC. Him going to be their DC would be good for us too heh -
I feel like since Chark isn’t a big name he should be reasonable. Definitely wouldn’t break the bank for him. He’d be competing with TMJ for that #2 spot, might not win it with the way Marshall flashed this year. Year three with a new offensive scheme and QB could be huge for him.
