Panthers bring in DT Walter Nolen for 30-visit
LinvilleGorge replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I mean, NTs are already basically a unicorn. You're looking for a guy who is big enough and strong enough to hold up snap after snap with two 300+ pound NFL athlete technically proficient people movers trying desperately to move you off that spot. That is a HARD guy to find that can hold his ground snap after snap in those scenarios. It's the trade off of the 3-4. Teams love it because it puts more speed on the field and 3-4 OLBs are easier to find than 4-3 DEs but that NT is a hard spot to fill. -

There's a reason why prototypes exist. It obviously doesn't mean that someone who doesn't fit can't succeed but it's going to be harder to pull off. But yeah, if I'm looking for a NT I'm ideally looking for someone built like Vince Wilfork not Shy Turtle's 6'3" 300. That's fine for a three tech if you have quickness and burst but man, it's gonna be HARD to hold it down at the nose at that size and we saw that play out last year. -

Yet Evero seems to like lighter, more mobile NTs. Sure, if you can find a lighter, quicker NT who can still hold up to double teams that's awesome but that seems like looking for a unicorn. -
Ward 1, Hunter, maybe 2. Per McShay

I'm still shocked the Steelers were dumb enough to take Kenny fuging Pickett in the 1st round. Holy poo that dude is trash. I ain't never in my life seen a QB get thrown by the ball until Kenny Pickett did that poo. LOLOLOL -

Oh wee mayne. Yeah, I'd just cross him off my draft board. -

I mean, we basically fug up everything. Most of the guys we draft are as good as they're ever going to be on draft day. We've been both terrible at drafting and terrible at player development for years now. -

The difference is that everyone knows that Schwesinger projects as an off ball LB where as most think Walker can be an EDGE. He did both at UGA. Hell, I wouldn't be opposed to to drafting Walker at 8 and Schwesinger at 57 if he's there. -
Ryan Fowler: Panthers hosting Texas A&M Shemar Stewart

He could. IMO he's a lot more likely to follow the path of most workout warriors who didn't produce in college. -

And that's not factoring in the "daddy factor" complication. You know Deion is gonna be sticking his nose in if things aren't going according to his plan. So you have to both fall in love with the (IMO) marginal prospect and deal with the helicopter dad with a huge microphone. Yeah, that'd be a hard pass from me. -

I could definitely see several OTs going high. Yeah, I just never got the hype with Sanders as an NFL prospect. Good college QB there just wasn't anything about his traits and not much about his game that I saw translating to the NFL. He just looks like the classic "good college player who doesn't translate to the NFL" IMO. -

The OTs and Sanders are the big wildcards IMO. -

Well, there's always the chance that Walker goes before us. I don't expect it but I wouldn't be completely shocked either. -

My clued in Giants fan Buddy says #3 is Carter's floor. If he's there they're taking him. -
Every draft we have people talking about how all the guys worth picking will be gone and how none of these guys are special, blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile, history says that there will be hall of famers drafted after pick #8 this year.

One FG in the last 11 minutes is a crazy stat.

You only have 30 official prospect visits to use. -
If he's just a rotational player then we massively overpaid him.
-
But, but, but... this guy with 4.5 career sacks sure looks and works out like he SHOULD be a player!!!
-
No clue. All I know is that he seems to like playing a lot of two high safety looks and I don't know how this guy fits that.
-
Definitely baffling. I have no idea why you're paying a safety big money in today's NFL when he's a liability in coverage. The era of the undersized LB at safety is over. The only way it works is if you run a cover three scheme and you have a Earl Thomas or Ed Reed caliber player at FS. And even then I think you're best served to try to use that in the box SS as a position to save cap space. You're not trying to pay that guy. You just want a "check the box" player there because that type of player isn't highly sought after (or at least shouldn't be) in today's NFL.
-
I wouldn't hate the pick. I'm honestly not sure why he hasn't been talked about as a potential guy to go higher. People are talking about him being a one year wonder but he had 8.5 sacks two years ago as a sophomore. The two sack junior season is definitely eyebrow raising and I'm sure teams will be watching the hell out of that film to figure out why he had that massive dip.

If we don't have two in Tershawn Wharton and Tre'Von Moehrig then we made two big ass mistakes in free agency. If those signings pan out we should have at least four core players on D in Brown, Horn, Wharton, and Moehrig. I would consider Jackson at CB as a "potential". Same with Trevin Wallace at LB.

Draft Night Hypothetical: Abdul Carter
LinvilleGorge replied to OnlyPantherFaninMaine's topic in Carolina Panthers
There's no way I'm trading up in this draft with all of our roster needs, period. We don't need one star. We just need a talent infusion across the board. -
Yeah. I get pointing out that we're light on core talent on D but those folks too often overlook that if you're approaching our receivers and TEs it's the same story. Chuba Hubbard is our star offensive skill positions weapon. Oh wee mayne.
