I think it's because they know he can come in and give them a couple quality starts if need be while being a great guy in the locker room. That's honestly not a terrible thing for a backup. If he has to play long-term you're probably fuged but that's generally the case for backups, period. That's why they're backups.

He has elite talent but man, as soon as DCs get a bead on him in a system it's just game over. They've got him dialed now. I honestly think Purdy is a pretty average game manager type but Darnold would be Darnold. This. He looked good last year once we transitioned to a power running offense that set the pass up with the run. That's what he's equipped to do at this point. It's like asking a read option QB to play like Drew Brees. It's probably not gonna go well. It's just square pegs and round holes.

He whiffs a lot. I'm not even talking missed tackles. Just straight up blow bys. He's gotta learn how to see the ball and throttle down. He just comes blasting through like a bottle rocket at breakneck straightline speed and he either smashed into the ball carrier or he doesn't.

I really don't like shotgun in short yardage situations. Maybe as a wrinkle here and there but for the most part most teams need to be under center there. Running out of shotgun in those situations is just giving the D a headstart and forcing your RB to start from a stand still instead of taking the handoff already running downhill.

Levis has legit elite talent but I want to see what he looks like when the league gets a couple of games of footage on him. I don't think it'll be pretty.
