I'd love to see PJ and/or Grier look like viable options today because I'm not convinced that we have a capable backup on the roster currently and given our OL, we may need a capable backup.
-
It wouldn't be to me. He didn't play well as a rookie and we drafted two more CBs and signed a mid-level FA. We clearly weren't happy with what we had there.
-
Taylor too. For that matter Ian Thomas.

Who in the fug are Jonathan Celestine and Frankie Luvu?

RIP PJ

I was talking long-term. Both drafted into systems that seem to fit their skill sets. Both coached by good staffs. Lance seems to have the best immediate situation, but I'm not sure either actually play as rookies. Jones may have the better situation long-term simply because of the draft capital SF had to relinquish to get Lance. The roster is probably going to feel that down the road.
-
Lance and Jones definitely landed in the best situations out of the 1st round rookie QBs.
-
I hate what happened to Burrow. I hope he can bounce back from it.

4.7/4.8 is still plus athleticism at the QB position. 4.4 is just 1%er type athleticism at the QB position.
-
I don't see it. Everyone acts like Brees lacked elite talent but the only measurable he lacked was height. He had everything else. He didn't have a Favre arm but his arm was good and he was a plus athlete. Jones doesn't have anywhere close to Brees' arm or legs. I could be wildly wrong, but I think a Kirk Cousins or Jared Goff is likely Jones' ceiling.

I never understood the Jones hype. All I saw from him at Alabama was standing behind an elite OL with all the time in the world and floating dying ducks to wide open likely future All-Pro WRs. I just didn't see NFL QB traits.

Everything Rhule and company say speaks to a "five year rebuild process". I see that approach happening on D. But everything we're doing on offense says we're primarily looking for quick fixes.
-
Looking forward to seeing the rookies. Looking forward to seeing who sits it out on the OL. That'll be a good indication of seeing who we see as our starters.
-
I don't know what to make of it. Time will tell. All I can definitely make of it is that we are not handling Darnold as if he is "basically a rookie".
-
Winston put up huge numbers in Tampa, he just also put up huge turnover numbers. If Payton can help him clean up the turnovers he's gonna be a problem.
-
This. You have to ignore a lot of stuff to put a ton of faith in Darnold. Rhule sold Darnold to the fanbase by saying he's "basically a rookie". In other words, just ignore all that terribleness that happened in NY. We're going to build this guy from the ground up like a rookie. But, that's not how we're actually handling it. Look at all these snaps true rookies are getting in week one of the preseason. Meanwhile, our "basically a rookie" QB is getting the established vet treatment and sitting it out.

Let's see what that reception would look like at BOA. Teddy had a good guy reputation in Minnesota. That went out the door in Carolina when he threw the staff under the bus after missing a wide open DJ in the endzone.
-
Oh, we're going to give him a chance. He has better weapons here. He has a better OC here. His OL is likely still going to be trash. I just don't know if this is a recipe for success. If the OL can't hold up, he's going to start seeing ghosts again. He's broken right now and we're trying to fix him. Putting him behind a patchwork OL is going to be interesting.
-
It's just all that stuff that happened between then and now that throws a splash of cold water on that excitement.
-
I've been saying it for awhile now - I have serious concerns about Rhule and company's ability to evaluate the QB position.

Brady was a late 6th round pick. EVERYONE missed on Brady. Multiple times. The Pats aren't brilliant for drafting Brady in the 6th. They just took a late round flier on a guy and hit a walk off grand slam. If they'd had ANY hunch that Brady would end up being 10% of what he became they wouldn't have sat on their hands until the 6th round.
-
Hell, I'd love to be wrong and see Sam Darnold become an All-Pro QB for us and our OL to resemble the '90s Cowboys.

Scott was a speed bump. Greg Little was one of those lines painted on the road to look like a speed bump.

Once the Niners made it pretty clear they were holding onto Jimmy G, I thought it was obvious they were targeting Lance. Having Jimmy G means they don't have to feel pressured to play Lance too early. Hanging onto Jimmy G plus Shanny's affinity for QBs who can present a threat with their legs just screamed Lance to me. The Mac Jones rumors just never added up to me. He just doesn't fit the mold of a Shanny QB. I just couldn't see Shanny willing to give up a king's ransom to jump up to draft a guy who seems to be the opposite of what he really wants in a QB. Asking a guy to come in and play as a rookie coming from a D1-AA program seems like a disaster waiting to happen, regardless of talent level. It's a huge jump from college to pro. It's a HUGE jump from D1-AA to pro, especially at QB. I know Chinn did it and should've won the DROY award, but we tailored a role for him in our D that allowed him to be comfortable with his current skill set. You can't do that as readily for a QB. If you're not prepared to read a defense and deal with the speed of the game it isn't going to be pretty. Lance is an athlete and he can run, but he's not Cam. There's a reason he didn't run pre-draft. If the rumors were true that he could run 4.5, he would've ran. He ran a confirmed 4.92 in high school. I don't see a guy going from 4.92 to 4.5 while also gaining about 40 pounds. That just doesn't seem realistic. I'm curious to see how Lance develops and I do think he has the talent to be a franchise NFL QB and I also think he landed in a near ideal situation. We'll just have to see how it works out. I'm definitely not ready to crown him based on one play in a preseason game.
-
No, because honestly I don't care. I paid little attention to Lance because there was no indication we had any interest and I always thought he was the Niners' trade up target anyway so I just never saw him as a real option. I just looked at the boxscore because I saw a Shanny quote that was less than glowing saying that Lance "did some good, did some bad" so I was curious and it was like, "Oh... yeah, I see." Based on the media hype and some of the talk I'd seen I just assumed the guy lit it up like the 4th of July.
