Seattle does not love Baker Mayfield. They never seriously engaged in trade talks with Cleveland. They let us get him for a 4th/5th round pick while sticking Cleveland with the bulk of his salary. You don't "love" a guy and then fail to make that deal.

I honestly think it was basically that JR was really old and in declining health with no succession plan with the plan being for the team to be sold after his death. They really wanted Tepper in the club and jumped on the opportunity to speed up the clock a bit then they basically told everyone that unless you're willing to blow Tepper's bid completely out of the water you might as well not even bother because we're going to force this team to be sold to our guy.
-
Bingo. What Snyder has done time and time again was far worse than what JR did and yet he remains. Not sure what JR did to fall out of favor or maybe they just wanted Tepper in the club so badly that they jumped on the first opportunity to create an opening.

Maybe we actually learned something from the Darnold trade. That lesson being DON'T fuging NEGOTIATE AGAINST YOURSELF. The Jets were in the same situation with Darnold. We were the only serious suitor. Disregarding Darnold's atrociousness, we got absolutely fleeced trading what we did for a player that really didn't have any other suitors.

Training Camp Interest Post-Mayfield Trade

Definitely more. -
Baker Mayfield is well worth the risk for a 4th/5th round pick and less than $5M salary. That's a no-brainer IMO when your other options are Sam Darnold, PJ Walker, and a 3rd round rookie who played in a college offense that doesn't really translate to the NFL. That's not at all saying that Corral will be a bust, it's just not all that conducive to starting as a rookie and being successful.

Robbie/y on I Am Athlete podcast speaking on Sam & Baker

It's a no win situation. If he bashed Darnold then everyone would call him a bad teammate and point out how terrible he was himself last year. And everyone would be right. -

I don't have an issue with Robbie sticking up for Darnold. They've played a lot of football together and spent a lot of time in the same locker room. It'd be pretty shitty of Robbie to bash Darnold IMO. -

Robbie played very well in '20. He played like the worst WR in the league last season. You can't blame passes bouncing off of his hands on the QB no matter who it is. -
If Baker plays well, I think franchise tag might be likely. We might be hesitant (probably should be hesitant) to roll out the Brinks truck after one season.
-
They already know Darnold sucks. They gambled on his physical talent but then they found out he sucks because he's not mentally a QB. They know PJ sucks. Corral is a 3rd round rookie that I'm sure they like but are you really relying on a 3rd round rookie QB to save your job? Because if you are, you're probably already as good as fired. At rookie mini-camp they probably confirmed what they already suspected - there's no way in hell this guy is going to be ready to play early on in his rookie year. It's been obvious for awhile now that we were going to add another vet QB and Baker has been the most obvious candidate ever since the Browns won (or you could legitimately argue they ultimately lost ) the Watson sweepstakes.

Maybe, maybe not. I don't want his cheating ass either way. No Panthers fan that watched the Broncos tee off on Cam Newton like Payton's Saints did on an aging Brett Favre should either. If we hire Sean Payton I'm out. That's it. Towel thrown.
-
No it's not. Principles matter. How many coaches have been suspended by the NFL for a year for grossly violating the spirit of the game? I'll save you the effort. Two. Sean Payton and his DC Gregg Williams for Bountygate.
-
Bountygate. That's enough for me. That's more than enough.
-
I really, really hope not.
-
I don't see it happening but I'd be happier than Sean Payton in a pharmacy.

Big Ten and SEC fixing to dismantle the ACC?
LinvilleGorge replied to Squirrel's topic in Carolina Panthers
They gave up years ago. They basically transformed from state fans to just pure UNC haters. -

It's true. -

The latest rumors are interesting. My god it would be hilarious if UNC goes to the SEC and leaves state behind. Sheer hilarity would ensure from the wolfpack fanbase. All 37 of them. -
In short, the key to the season is Matt Rhule proving that he's an NFL caliber coach. I'm not holding my breath but I'd be pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.

Joe Person and The 33rd Team break down the Mayfield trade
LinvilleGorge replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Displaying that "we'll get 'em next year" (or maybe two or three years down the road) attitude is something Panthers fans are very accustomed to. -
Why would anyone give up anything to pay Darnold $8M a year? The problem with this idea is that they've actually watched Sam Darnold play four NFL seasons. If we released Darnold all the offers he'd field would be 1-2 year prove it type deals with very little guaranteed money and some incentives built in to compensate him if he actually plays and performs.
-
I think the staff understands Darnold's limitations at this point. It's Baker's job to lose. He's going to have to suck not to be the starter.

Is Baker Mayfield the second best QB in the NFC South?
LinvilleGorge replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
Maybe. Winston has put up big numbers in the past but they're accompanied with big turnover numbers. If he can cut down on the turnovers he's probably #2. Baker is the best QB we've had since prime Cam. Which is saying absolutely nothing.
