The Athletic - Post-Combine Consensus Big Board - 3/17
LinvilleGorge replied to Bear Hands's topic in Carolina Panthers
Here's a pre-draft hot take... Jaxson Dart is going a lot higher than a lot of people expect. Possibly QB2. Possibly top 10. -

Hopefully someone falls in love with him. Seems like classic Jerry Jones behavior. I'll take #12 and #44 for #8 ALL DAY and even toss them back #111 or #114 if I had to. -

Yeah, trade down is honestly my preference. Just going purely off the draft chart, we could move down to the #15/16 range for #15/16 and #47/48 for #8. If we wanted to throw in one of our 4ths (#111/114) then we could conceivably be looking at moving down to the #13/14 and #45/46 range. All I know is that it's going to be a loooooong wait from #8 to #57 and I don't want us to start getting antsy with future picks as a LOT of prospects we like come off the board. -

What's most weird is that the Pats took a QB at #3 and now have hired another defensive minded HC who is loading up on D and leaving his young franchise QB to deal with trash on offense. They're following the Panthers' blueprint with Cam. -

Well, the 4th WR off the board last year had nearly 1300 yards and 10 TDs as a rookie so is this supposed to dissuade me? -

If the Pats go defense after spending heavily on D in FA and leave that OL in shambles with no receivers in considering telling my agent to demand a trade if I'm Drake Maye. Like... damn. -
He was a good speed rusher and good on pursuit against the run. He pretty much sucked at everything else. Luckily for him his strength is what gets you paid and teams will overlook the flaws if you can put the QB on his back.

That's what they claim about Scourton. That he bulked up this year and it hurt him. Which could be true. He had 11 sacks last year. The thing with Stewart is that he's never produced so I do have my doubts about that narrative.

I like T-Mac as a prospect but I also definitely don't think that he's a legit mid-4.4s type. If he could legit run a 4.48 he would've done it at the Combine. Him posting 4.48 at the Combine would probably make him an absolute top 10 lock, maybe even a chance to go top 5. Everyone always runs faster at their Pro Day. Hell, remember when Funchess ran 4.7 at the Combine then magically ran a 4.48 at his Pro Day? Devin Funchess was NOT a 4.48 guy. -
The first thing that jumps out to me watching this guy play is that his first step is sloooooow. Sure, when he can get to step two or three without contact you can see the speed but the first step is labored. Beating NFL OTs around the edge with speed is all about that first step. The second thing that jumps out is that I don't see a bit of technique. Where's a swim move? A spin? Hand fighting? I don't see any of it. I just see a big, fast, athlete who can occasionally make an impact by being one of the best athletes on the field. It's like watching a D1 football recruit on a HS basketball court. Like yeah, you can see that this guy is a helluva athlete but you can also see that he's not really a basketball player. All the impact he's making is just a byproduct of being the best athlete out there. That's what watching the Shemar Stewart college "highlights" looks like. I have no idea how people are watching this guy and seeing a 1st round prospect, forget top 10.
-
This. If we were a playoff team sitting at #8 that felt pretty good about our overall roster and felt we had the luxury of swinging for the fences on a boom/bust player at an impact position, okay. That's obviously not us. And the thing is, most of those consistent playoff teams got to that position by NOT doing stupid poo like this. LOL
-
Watching his highlights is just bizarre. Like if these are the "highlights"... damn. This dude sucks. LOL Oh look, here he is again beating the one on one block just being faster and stronger than the opposing OL and getting a clear path to the QB and somehow not even coming close to getting the sack. Yay! Highlight! You have to remember, most of these OLs he's simply running around in these college "highlights" aren't NFL players. They're worse than the worst guys on our roster.
-
I think I only watched two of his games and I honestly didn't notice him. Having watched a couple of his "highlight" reels it's wild how many times he has one on one matchups and beats the blocker but then just runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. Like free path to the QB and doesn't even come close. He looks like an elite athlete who just has absolutely zero football instincts.
-
I'm not saying he won't. I'm saying that history shows that these guys with poor production in college but stellar workouts tend to also go on to have poor production in the NFL. Yeah, there are exceptions but make no mistake about it, they're exceptions and not the norm. And in Stewart's case, his production isn't just run of the mill "poor" for a 1st round draft pick. His stats scream UDFA. There's just an insane gap between the traits and the production. Not all great athletes are football players.
-
I'm not completely sold on Walker but if I'm forced to pick between Stewart and Walker I'm taking Walker all day everyday.
-
5 is more than Stewart had his entire career. LOL The thing the vast majority of 1st round busts have in common is that they have all the traits for a pro player.
-
Two (2) sacks in SEC play in three seasons. He had a whole half a sack in SEC play this season.
-
If you just saw the stat line with no accompanying Combine workout numbers you'd assume this was a guy who was a long shot to get a UDFA camp invite who should probably be spending plenty of time updating his non-football resume.
-
Imagine spending a top 10 pick on an EDGE with this stat line... This guy has workout warrior written all over him.

Graham, T-Mac, Walker, Warren, or trade down.
