Where would the Panthers be if they sat Bryce Young last season?
strato replied to hepcat's topic in Carolina Panthers
IMO Dalton would (present day) and would have beat him out but was not brought in to compete, and he stated that in preseason or camp last year. Strictly a backup by mutual agreement is the way it shook out. -

I watch them because I love football and there was enough Panthers love that hasn’t run out these last 6 years, that I still try. I’ll watch just because. But now I have to do it via recording playback well after the game is over. The commercials are skipped and best of all, all that wasted red flag challenge time they use. You can watch a game real fast, when it suits you. There is no more resentment over wasting my day (to watch THAT). I expect a loss and don’t upset at a play because I know we aren’t winning poo and it doesn’t matter. But it has been some really bad football for a while. Especially offense and especially Bryce last year. When I’d watch another game, every quarterback looked better. They just did. -

That's exactly right, they don’t ask my permission. But they should have before that 2023 draft lol. Dumbasses. -

Toughness, he gains respect for that but I think most people see him as not hard to beat. -

I would be more inclined to quit following over the owner ruining the team. Players produce or leave sooner or later. -

No. We are praising them because they are not stopping at the 36 year old QB and saying that’s it. We got it. Either Young really is good and everyone in the building believes it (and I know they say they do), or they are afraid if they get a decent younger backup in here everyone in the locker room will see Young is a naked Emperor and they will have a big problem. And neither of those things are real believable to me. So wtf I don’t understand why no real competition for him. His respect meter would register higher from me and I am sure others more important than me too, if he could show he was better than someone. Anyone. -

Buffalo not being all nice to New England? In what world would people expect a team to treat their divisional competitors fairly? When have those New England bastards ever done anything but work to undermine their competitors? Buffalo should be trading with someone on New England’s schedule hoping to help deal them a loss, and New England is supposed to know that. If anyone in New England is whining about it... lol. -
Too late to edit my last comment... sorry it seems so negative but that is what we saw all last year and was all peaches and cream, until it got real. I can’t indulge in fantasy hopes, it has to be done in the real world not practice field drills. And we won’t get any feedback on that for months now. A big do over for everyone.

BREAKING: Panthers signing Rashad Penny

Been rooting for Cohen. Penny has the kind of health history that would smack you in the mouf if you didn’t keep your running back room full. they will still need Chuba and it doesn’t pay to dismiss Sanders -

I just watched this guy Penny play a few minutes of football. If he can stay healthy he is a load and can move and catch. Can’t complain. Reminded me a little of Foreman which we missed a lot and is not like anyone else in that room. Good. -

Yes you know I will make my negative comments about Bryce Young’s quarterbacking, darn right. As long as he is inflicted on us, serving up smelly highlights. I wasn’t trying to then though. It probably is just hard to see stuff talking about a constricted field, likely a limited passing game, and references to a game manager ceiling, tippy toes, etc, as positive. I was thinking about adapting the pro game to his game. Trying to visualize what that will look like. Trying to imagine how they were going to go about it. Same as I was doing last year, but that arrived totally DOA and just ghosted. So we have yet to see what a custom fit 'play to Young’s strengths' offense would look like. I can see in my mind a way it would work, or function. It really isn’t the kind of ball I care about watching though. Real innovation could make it into something that works in a way that hasn’t been tried, which would be real cool. But the odds say nah, we are not going to witness the birth of a new and revolutionary NFL trend, not here, not with this bunch. It is gonna the small ball point guard express with lots of handoffs. Zzzzz. edit: I guess you are not remembering all the people telling the complainers to go root for the Texans and just being hostile and insulting if you spoke against little brother. -

I couldn’t figure that one out either. I was trying to tippy toe around Young for all the delicate ’that’s my quarterback’ crowd. Well, it isn’t exactly a crowd anymore.... -
I keep hoping he is still the same impatient dude that had Teddy run off and got Sam in and the next year Baker PJ and Sam. And then that monstrosity of a trade and pick. Please don’t change that just because it was your pick, Dave. It’s okay to be impatient. Or, it is the wrong time to repent and find patience.

BREAKING: Panthers signing Rashad Penny

If the defense can come together there might be some watchable games this year. The offense is basically that of an expansion team but not without some intriguing potential. New players all over, new coaches all over, it might really be bad early. That is where the running game and especially some above average defense could keep us from stinking it up too bad. I think the last 7 games are going to be a better representation of the team than early on. I don’t know the schedule late (probably division heavy) but the idea is just that things are starting to be comfortable for the OL, the young skill guys, etc. -

Things had been so ugly for so long, and Wilks had us on track to beat the teams we should beat. Which weren’t a ton but it was the first watchable Panthers football in years. And didn’t seem ugly to me. -

It might be more about matching your scheme to your players and executing better than the opponent. Or in the Panthers’ case executing well enough to keep it a game with a much better team. With this quarterback, the offense is going to have to be hybrid as poo. Number one, it is still best to protect young quarterbacks with a stout running game and offensive line. Number two, our young quarterback needs more help than most top overall picks. So, running game, come one down. I don’t think just having those pieces in place mean the passing game can’t be creative, or that the run can't be more influenced by modern principles. -
I was trying to say that maybe after spending on Cousins the Falcons had a commitment downgrade, second thoughts. I mean, they aren’t playing around with making sure they are competitive at QB.

yeah, we don’t get any or probably very little benefit from cutting Sanders we need to ride it out this year. And I agree on expecting better with a better line in front of him. He looked so ’not good' I wondered if he was playing through something. I have a feeling he could mildly surprise people. -
