What were your expectations for this season?
Gapanthersfan replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Progress, in something. Anything. I had no expectations of improvement in Young. He was who we thought he was. I knew Luvu was the glue on the entire defense. Brown jammed it up, Luvu was the pass rush and kept the run honest. We added people I’ve never heard of except Clowney. I knew it would be bad, didn’t think it’d be like this. Preseason was fools gold that I fell for badly. Evero, could call up some kind of stunt. Like, what do you have to lose at this point? I knew Thielen, Andy and Chuba would be our mainstay. I wasn’t sure about the o line help. Didn’t really pay much attention honestly. I hadn’t even heard of Johnson, but I don’t pay attention to the rest of the NFL like I used to. I was very skeptical of Canales and Dan. Thought like the previous, they sold their man cards to T. This is a strong maybe, I’d say. -
Alcohol could definitely help in understanding Sunday’s play calling. this makes me recall a line from the best movie ever written. but I walk in here, all of a sudden, total stranger, I'm calling you Rick (Dave) and Sheila (Dan) like we're in some kind of AA meeting. I don't want to be your buddy, Rick (Dave). I just want a little breakfast (Winning season). So yes. Dude could be a glory hole addict of a jack shack on the outskirts of Fayetteville. I don’t care. Just win some games, Bro.

Yup. It’s just that we have always had trash has been position coaches as well. Without good position coaches, which we almost never have, the young talent never progresses. Additionally, the raw high ceiling guys might be where they are…. Because they just don’t like playing the game all that much so they succeed off of raw God given talent. If a guy with a high ceiling would have put the work in to iron out the wrinkles, he’d be a top 10 pick instead of midway 2nd round. So we end up with guys who don’t really live and breathe football, being coached by retread position coaches. Good times. This is why we need truly fundamentally sound, NFL ready players.

It’s the Panthers way. Sucky team, GM is feeling the heat so takes a flier on an injured has been vet and/or a lotto ticket draft. It always fails miserably. He gets fired anyway. And we regress back to the mean. And it’s going on again. Everyone clamoring for another savior of the franchise draft pick. What we need is 2 entirely unpopular and boring drafts with guys who just do their damn job. Fundamentally sound. They are run stoppers. Sure tacklers. Nose for the ball. Intelligent. They catch with their hands, and catch every damn ball thrown their way. They don’t miss blocking assignments. They rarely hold or get called for false starts. They actually enjoy playing the game. your 4.4 guy ain’t shi* if the ball just bounces off his chest. Your 16 sack guy who is worthless against the run will lose you many more games than he’ll win you.

Yes. Year after year they draft high with ‘potential’ guys thinking every time that they can coach em up… well we can’t. And don’t. And the cycle continues. The only way this team has found success in the past is with a squad of otherworldly studs that can take a game over on their own. Cam, Luke, Greg, Davis all on the field at the same time? SS89, peppers, Jenkins, Stephen Davis, Delhomme…. All players that if they catch a gear, it’s a wrap. That’s how this team wins. They never coach up anyone. They rely on striking gold on the HOF ready player to come in and be the savior of the season. Those rosters challenge any of the SB teams, talent wise, except for a precious few… LOB Seahawks, etc.

Same old same old. Panthers fans still looking for a savior while fielding a team full of practice squad players. And we wonder why we go through QBs so quickly.

Here’s where I go off the reservation. Don’t read if you can only endure a post that is under 2 paragraphs. Play calling was really really weird, and it set the tone. They had no idea how to handle stunts. Passing on first down got us behind the sticks. Stunts on second/third down and the rest is history. Thielen is Mr first down and for the second week in a row, it shows how badly missed that is. Thielen moves the chains. Chuba moves the chains. Not one single screen to Chuba. They completely abandoned the run, when it was working very well. Losing XL was the final piece. Sanders is a complete bum who checked out once he got paid. I will say it again and again and again, Thielen is criminally under appreciated here, but very respected by defenses. Everyone is obsessed with the home run guys, but a team has to have a first down guy. Usually it’s a big TE with good hands. We don’t have that guy. Thielen is our first down guy. He’s our check down guy who puts us in 2nd and 2. He’s our 3rd and 12 outlet. Thielen and Chuba keep us ahead of the chains. One is injured and the other was given up on. Besides those 2, we have a WR who reportedly has an attitude problem, a rookie with potential and then it’s a sea of bums and ‘who the hell is thats.’ People are really quick to dump on Andy. Long knives are out. Look, he’s been the only thing to give a glimpse of hope since Wilks. I actually still want to watch this Sunday. So we dump Andy at the end of the season… Ok, for what then? For whom? Another stupid project? Andy’s not a world beater but he knows how to read a defense and complete a pass. He is not a project. Who would we bring in that could come close to being plug and play, that would actually WANT to be here with T as the owner. This team isn’t even ready to draft a QB yet. He’d get killed. The receivers would grow stale and unmotivated and we’d go nowhere. Hey look another injury to a key position we have 0 depth in because we traded away more draft capital and/or murdered our cap on an oft injured vet has been. Wash, rinse, repeat. Same old Panthers. Desperate for a savior. This build has to be done the right way. Slow and boring. Get a hard hitting identity back again, as was advertised. Get thumpers. Trench warriors. Keep a field general around who can keep an offense alive and get a first down every once in a while. Give people a reason to want to sign contract #2 with us. Unless we can all of a sudden have a legion of boom-esque draft, our version of the 3-4 will continue to be humiliating. Where’s the Tylenol?!

Unless you’re loaded with all pro/ pro bowl talent, it’s always a disaster. You need lock down corners and a stupid stable of pass rushers with other worldly DTs. Either way it’s exciting… usually for the wrong team.

1. Perfect Gif to sum this up. 2. he’s wearing jellies. Yes!! 3. In the Jerry years, even in down years, we still had an identity. We had an owner who had himself played in the NFL. He knew what a football player looked like. Hurney took a lot of swings and struck out frequently, but every so often he would bust a Barry Bonds home run. We were never once this completely devoid of talent. I’m trying to find confidence in Dan as a GM, but I know who his boss is. Same with Canales. Evero… God only knows. Even the best electrician won’t be able to wire up a panel with a pair of needle nose pliers and a steak knife. It’s all just a complete show right now.

I’m still completely confused. What happened to trying to keep the other team’s offense off the field when your defense showed that it had no business on the field? When they were down 14, they played like they were down 21 in the 4th quarter. Down 14, or even 17 in the first half is not insurmountable by any means, but the play calling sure looked like it. We WERE (past tense) getting 1st downs, until… This was Canales feeling himself way too much IMHO. When the desperation passing game to second and third stringers wasn’t working, he double downed. I thought he himself said we would be primarily a punch you in the mouth running team? Not once did he try to slow the game down. He tried his best Payton impersonation. Well, we were landing liver shot after liver shot. We took haymakers, but we were doing damage on their core, until ego kicked in and we wanted to show that he could rain down haymakers as well.., only every time we got countered straight to the jaw. DJ played the defense like a fiddle. Why wouldn’t he? He’s knows the scheme inside and out, left, right, sideways, upside down, center and askew. He knows tells and tendencies. He knows the calls and formations. If there were any carryover from the Reich offense… guess what… he knew that too. Any chance of the D doing anything with all the circumstances involved was a pipe (crack pipe) dream. DJ headed up film study all. Week. Long. So yeah, our only prayer of it not being completely humiliating was to ride our horse and keep wailing away at that liver, and then pride took over. It looked almost narcissistic…

What would you do with our guaranteed top 3 draft pick?
Gapanthersfan replied to WarPanthers89's topic in Carolina Panthers
Oh I understood exactly what you meant. Trying to tell T his defensive dream won’t work and we need to change… yeah… -
Painful loss. I loved the way Luvu played, but I’d want to get out of this team too.

No Shaq to communicate plays properly and there we go. Horn is not one to blow a play. That’s how you know communication was an issue.

Dude might as well be drawing up plays, which I’m sure he does. Unless you have just the right guys, a 3-4 gets straight exploited in the run. A 4-3 can at least compete if you’ve got at least jag-ish type guys. This is all just so bad. The offense isn’t as bad as they showed today, but the defense is abysmal in every aspect. Evero can’t draw up a blitz that gets home to save his life. They are all completely lost, which is to be expected, but this is some next level, whatever dignity you regained, is completely shot to shi*. -
Defense got the biggest beat down I’ve ever seen in a Panthers game. I don’t understand how we continually have everyone injured. In this type of game, if we could have at least tried to keep their offense off the field it maybe wouldn’t have been completely humiliating. They had no answer for Chuba and he was getting us first downs. Then they went full moron and kept calling plays the defense was begging them to play. Then we couldn’t buy a first down and it was a wrap at that point.

Trade back to somewhere around 10-12 for their second and next year’s 3rd. I go back to the 4-3 defense. I go DE that plays the run like a boss in the first, DT/LB/center in the second, whichever looks most promising. I’d like to take a flier on a small school QB who has an accurate, big arm in the second or third. Rest of the draft BPA, as long as they’re big dudes. No tweeners. It has never worked out. -
Perhaps this is the year he can reform his rep of being the overlord, and maybe con a good staff in to signing up.
-
They got cute. Instead of sticking with the run with a RB that was gashing it, they wanted to showcase their air attack, but it wasn’t there, repeatedly.! And they still stuck with it. Incompletions on first down put us behind the sticks. It’s like they refused to run on 1st down. Andy was off. The whole line was off, but Chuba was still beasting. Dude could have run for 150 yards and 2 TDs easily, and the game would have been competitive. On first and goal, he got 1 touch. Something was off. There was just a weird vibe. Energy wasn’t there, like something else was going on.

That out to the sideline is just a throw he does not have and should never be attempted again. -

Love that from JC. LOVE IT! Heart. I don’t care about the repercussions. That’s the F this BS the defense has needed all day. -

We would have lost anyway, but if Chuba is the focus, this game would have been at least competitive -
