Wilks will have an end of season presser today so may get an update then I would think

Mike Sando's latest NFL Pick Six this morning seems to confirm Harbaugh is not on Tepper's radar:

So which QB do we think will be available at #9?
UNCrules2187 replied to NAS's topic in Carolina Panthers
This will all depend on how the offseason and draft shakes out, but if Fitt sticks as GM, I could see Seattle being a trade up partner for Carolina if the draft plays out like: 1. Chicago trades back with Indy - QB 2. Houston - QB 3. Arizona - Anderson/Carter 4. Chicago - Carter/Anderson 5. Seattle - trade back with CAR for whichever QB is left -

I would not be shocked whatsoever if the Colts trade up to 1 and draft Levis. I feel like it's going to happen... -

My thinking today is that Young, Stroud, and Levis will all be gone within in the top 7 picks. The Texans and Colts will definitely take QBs and I think the Raiders could as well (although McD may prefer reuniting with Brady or Jimmy G as he may want a vet QB given he could be on the hot seat). Even if it's just Houston and Indy, I think there will be teams that trade up to get their guy - Carolina may be one of them. 1. Chicago - I think prime candidate to trade back with Indy - Indy jumping Houston to get their preferred QB 2. Houston - Could see them taking any of Young/Stroud/Levis (NFL folks seem to really like Levis) 3. Arizona - potential trade back candidate 4. Indy - see Chicago 5. Seattle - think they'll hope that one of Carter or Anderson is still there 6. Detroit - think they'll stick with Goff, could see them being a prime trade back candidate if one of Young/Stroud/Levis sis till on the board 7. Oakland - see above 8. Atlanta - could go QB, could go BPA -
If he goes to Denver I have a hard time believing Fangio would want to go back there a year after being fired as a DC
-
This article seems to insinuate he has connections to Fangio: Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero are other highly regarded candidates. Former Broncos coach Vic Fangio could be in play as a defensive boss if Johnson, who has done a commendable job with quarterback Jared Goff, was the choice as a potential successor to Smith. “Johnson is impressive, very sharp,” a source said. “He’s done a very nice job with that offense.” https://sportstalk790.iheart.com/featured/chris-gordy/content/2023-01-08-breaking-news-texans-fire-head-coach-lovie-smith/?mibextid=Zxz2cZ

STEVE WILKS - FINAL POLL THREAD
UNCrules2187 replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
Harbaugh would be IMO, but doesn't seem Tepper's interested. After that, it's a crap shoot, but I'd rather roll the dice. -

STEVE WILKS - FINAL POLL THREAD
UNCrules2187 replied to Sean Payton's Vicodin's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'm one of those. I think he did a B-level job with what was available to him, my reasoning for no is I think he'd do a B-level job regardless of the personnel. I don't like his coaching style/philosophy. -

No Jim Harbaugh - Carolina focusing attention elsewhere

Ah well. Really would’ve been pumped with Harbaugh. Not sure how I feel about Wilks. Think I’d rather roll the dice with Steichen, Waldron, or Johnson instead. -
• The Panthers-Saints game won’t draw a rating tomorrow, but how Carolina plays could impact the carousel. Interim coach Steve Wilks has done an admirable job, keeping his team in the playoff mix until Week 17, and owner David Tepper is conscious of the climate in his building—the locker room is solidly behind Wilks, who has enabled a reworked coaching staff to build a hard-edged identity behind a punishing run game over the second half of the year. If Wilks stays, it’d have to be with a detailed plan for the offense. The Panthers, after firing Matt Rhule, spent a good amount of time researching young offensive coaches, an indication on where Tepper was leaning with his search. Wilks could bring in someone such as Philadelphia QBs coach Brian Johnson—if he gets the job. I know Carolina people believe a good showing Sunday at New Orleans could well impact Wilks getting that shot. • As for Carolina GM Scott Fitterer, I’ve heard he’s been involved in laying groundwork for finding the next coach, so I think Tepper will keep him (I know he likes him) and his personnel staff, particularly if Wilks is the guy. That one scenario where I think there could be a new GM—if Tepper gets smitten with a coach like he did with Rhule in 2020, and that coach has leverage to push for his own GM. ... • A couple other GM names connected to Harbaugh would be ex-Jaguars, Eagles and 49ers exec Tom Gamble, and Ravens director of football research Scott Cohen (or maybe someone from Baltimore’s personnel department such as Joe Hortiz). So … does Harbaugh leave Michigan? The program is in good shape, and he has a really good team coming back. But NCAA sanctions are looming, and those calls to the Panthers were made, I’m told, because of his curiosity over that job, which says to me he’s really thinking about it. https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/01/07/nfl-coaching-carousel-buzz-rumors-sean-payton-jim-harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh flirting with the Carolina Panthers UPDATE
UNCrules2187 replied to TheSpecialJuan's topic in Carolina Panthers
Albert Breer today in his article on the coaching carousel: https://www.si.com/nfl/2023/01/07/nfl-coaching-carousel-buzz-rumors-sean-payton-jim-harbaugh -
In the article, Barnwell linked to an old Grantland article from 2015 that showed the record of interim HCs who were then promoted to full time HC: https://grantland.com/the-triangle/nfl-week-8-picks-the-weight-of-the-interim-label/ Coach Year Team Pre-Interim Post-Interim Future Years Future Records Bruce Coslet 1996 Bengals 1-6 7-2 4 14-37 Dave McGinnis 2000 Cardinals 2-5 1-8 3 16-32 Dick LeBeau 2000 Bengals 0-3 4-9 2 8-24 Jason Garrett 2010 Cowboys 1-7 5-3 9 80-64 Jeff Fisher 1994 Oilers 1-9 1-5 16 141-115 Leslie Frazier 2010 Vikings 3-7 3-3 3 18-29-1 Mike Singletary 2008 49ers 2-5 5-4 2 13-18 Mike Tice 2001 Vikings 5-10 0-1 4 32-32 Richard Williamson 1990 Buccaneers 5-8 1-2 1 3-13 Romeo Crennel 2011 Chiefs 5-8 2-1 1 2-14 Tom Cable 2008 Raiders 1-3 4-8 2 13-19 Record 26-71 33-46 340-397-1 Win% 0.268 0.418 0.461 Note that I updated the table to include the full results of Garrett's tenure with Dallas. The only additions to the above since then would be Mike Mularkey in Tennessee and Doug Marrone which would be: Coach Year Team Pre-Interim Post-Interim Future Years Future Records Mike Mularkey 2015 Titans 1-6 2-7 2 18-14 Doug Marrone 2016 Jaguars 2-12 1-1 4 22-42 Record 29-89 36-54 380-453-1 Win% 0.246 0.400 0.456 This is one of the things that gives me pause about hiring Wilks as the full time HC. It just historically hasn't worked well. The only ones that I'd say are decent to good are Fisher and Garrett and neither struck me as great HCs. I actually feel like Wilks would probably be in the same realm as those guys...occasional playoff runs with a bunch of medicore seasons.

Jim Harbaugh has convo with David Tepper
UNCrules2187 replied to Daeavorn's topic in Carolina Panthers
Not sure why Harbaugh doesn't fit in with that though. His last season, which was his worst, they were still 7-4 in playoff contention before finishing the year 1-4 to end 8-8. Yeah he wore out his welcome but he still gave them 4 years of prime contention after nearly a decade of losing seasons (prior to Harbaugh's first season in 2011, the 49ers hadn't even had a winning season since 2002). In reality, you're not going to find many teams with long-term coaches if they haven't won a SB. How much longer do you think Bills fans will put up with McDermott if the Bills don't win a SB this year? How long of a leash would Andy Reid be given if the 49ers held onto that 4th quarter SB lead and Reid was 0-2 in SBs with a likely HOF QB? -
ESPN+ article, but some interesting nuggets. Here's the order and some snippets: 7. Colts 6. Broncos 5. Cardinals 4. Commanders 3. Texans 2. Saints 1. Panthers https://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/35342127/ranking-nfl-best-worst-potential-head-coach-openings-2023-colts-broncos-panthers

Jim Harbaugh has convo with David Tepper
UNCrules2187 replied to Daeavorn's topic in Carolina Panthers
The idea of winning multiple Super Bowls, while in theory should be the goal of any franchise, is frankly a pipe dream. The only franchises who have won more than one SB since the turn of the century are: Ravens - 2 Rams - 2 (although technically speaking the 21st century began 1/1/01, so could argue it's just 1) Bucs - 2 Giants - 2 Pats - 6 (just fuging insane) Steelers - 2 So outside of the Pats, being able to win "multiple" SBs has meant no more than 2 rings. If Harbaugh puts us into SB contention for 4-5 years before flaming out and manages to bring the Carolinas one ring, sign me the fug up.
