Let’s also not ignore that guys like RGIII (WAS) , Mark Sanchez (NYJ), Baker Mayfield (CLE), DWatson (HOU), Mitch Trubiski (CHI) all took franchises that struggle to make the playoffs, to the playoffs. As first round picks on their original teams. When you get drafted by a poo team it’s harder to get them to the playoffs. Let’s not act like QBing a 49ER franchise currently is harder in any way than QBing a team like the Jaguars who just had Urban Meyer. One of the many reasons a guy who gets picked at 25 looks better than a guy picked at 3 is because the guy at 25 is going to a team that has good talent on it. And don’t lie, going into the draft the team picking 25 would likely have picked the guy going 3 over the guy they got at 25 if given the choice. You think the 49ers, for instance wouldn’t have wanted Lawrence if he was available over Lance? You think the 49ers wouldn’t take Lawrence over Purdy right now despite the fact Purdy might go further into the playoffs?

A lot. Because I don’t think there’s many that can afford to do that and still come back to win. We don’t have a QB which is why when we get down 10 points it seems like the game is over. Im mind blown right is that there are long timers here trying to make the point that QBs don’t matter much.

And if the Jags had PJ Walker or Sam Darnold they dont come close to coming back. Quarterbacks do matter.

One coach played a second half to not lose and one played to win. Props to Lawrence. I long for the days we have a QB who can flip a switch like that and bring the team back down big.

Imagine having a QB who can bring you back into games.

He has better wheels than I remember

It sounds crazy but I agree with this.

It was just a weird pick. I was certain they were going Jones but the pick should have been Fields.
-
It’s why it was stupid for SF to trade all those picks for a QB back then.

Trey Lance and Jordan Love… poor dudes. If Lance could get healthy he would throw to the most open WR in the NFL.

It drive the value up because there would be less top-end prospects in the draft at the position. It would come down to Young and Levis and Richardson being the only round 1 guys. So if you are a team committed to picking QB early in the draft it lessens the amount of choices you have. For instance, if Levis and Richardson returned to school it would leave Young as the only top QB in the draft. So every team would be competing to trade for just 1 guy. Folks were likely going into this thinking if you can’t get Young then Stroud is a heck of a consolation prize. Read most of the takes here on the draft order and folks typically have Stoud and Young close together and then there’s a massive drop to 3 and 4 for Levis and Richardson. This would drastically widen the gap between Young and the new #2 so you can trade to first overall and know you got your guy or risk waiting and have to settle for a “significantly lesser” QB on paper.

I know I am high on Fields compared to others here but I think him coming here with DJ and a good offensive line would more than cancel out learning a new offense. And who knows… maybe a new coach would try to poach Getsy from the Bears to help him out.

That doesn’t make sense. He can go pro and get 20+ million dollars vs 4 million for staying in college. Luck stayed back a year and it damn sure wasn’t because the thought he would be an average or below average QB in the NFL.

So which QB do we think will be available at #9?

There’s a rumor going on that Stroud is being offered a vast NIL deal to remain in school. Has three days left to declare. -

It’s not even an accurate statement but college productivity also doesn’t mean much when it comes to the pros. Look at college duds like Josh Allen. -

How are you comparing Fields who was an elite passer in college and not a runner to Richardson? -
I think many folks were worried about his injury past, only to watch him get injured again, while looking awful in the preseason.

If you want to get the #1 pick from the Bears, what's your move?
Varking replied to EgoDogg's topic in Carolina Panthers
We’ve been building a team around no QB for years. It’s not working. -

No we need a QB. Find something to trade other than DJ. -
Under No Circumstances Should We Trade a Haul for a QB/Pick

I’d have no problem trading our pick for Fields. I don’t believe the Bears would accept it. -

If you trade DJ to the Bears you are basically asking the new QB here to throw to targets worse then Justin Fields has had the last two years. Basically you’d be setting them up for failure. -

Yeah I took it as him saying we could take a QB so make sure you offer us enough compensation to make it worth us to move from #1 -

Just that he’d be the 2023 starter -

Weren’t Fields advanced passing numbers in college even better than Young and Stroud? Obviously they are better than Levis and Richardson.
