Yeah, hard to use the Bengals as a FA example when they took Higgins with an early 2nd in Burrow’s draft and Chase early in the 1st the next year. If we trade up, we’d basically be forfeiting Higgins, Chase and the following year’s first.

How about Marvin Harrison Jr? Joe Burrow’s first draft after he joined the Bengals got him Chase. We are competing for a title with a rookie. We don’t have a complete team yet. I’d rather the rookie get experience and if he loses more than a vet early, who cares? Now, we are likely throwing all our picks in the mix so draft will be a lot less impact anyway. Did it matter to the Bills, Bengals or Jax or LAC (Tua was hurt so can’t use him) to have them start as rookies?

See my post above. SF was in the SB two years prior to their loss in the NFC Championship this year. The talk in SF was they were a QB improvement away from winning a title. The 49ers team before that trade was far better than we are today.

49ers had a complete team before they trade up. That’s why they did it. They were hoping to get the missing piece. Same with the CMC trade. Did we lose in the conference championship last year and lose in the SB in 2019? Well if we did that and traded 3 picks for Stroud, it would be apples to apples. We aren’t in the same zip code of contender the past 3 years so if we missed on a mega deal like they did, we wouldn’t be OK.

Shoot higher. Rams are looking to trade some solid players, so I’d keep their picks and trade ours. Also, here’s the haul: Rams 2023 2nd (pick 36) Rams 2024 1st Rams 2025 1st Multiple FAs using Burns’ cap space $25-30M a year. Don’t care about replacing Burns, there are guys like Ngakoue, Reddick, Judon and this is the deepest edge rusher class in years. I only would have cared about the overall value we could have gotten like getting our franchise QB and still have multiple 2nds and 2024/2025 1sts to put weapons around the rookie QB say like a top TE in a deep class this year and maybe a guy like Marvin Harrison Jr next year. Now we’ll have Burns, a rookie QB and the same weapons we have now.

If we have to sign a vet because a QB we take top 10 is not ready to start, that would be disappointing. A vet like Brissett doesn’t make us a contender, play the rookie.

Problem is we didn’t trade Burns and we have the 9th pick. We’re aren’t in the best spot to own our destiny so to speak. I like the coaching staff a lot but there are no guarantees and Carr to the Saints may make us impulsive.

We better make the right call, otherwise we’ll have an expensive Burns with a shitty offense for 3 more years while our division is ripe for a great team. If we give up a ton of draft capital for the wrong guy, especially after not trading Burns, it’s going to suck.

This. Manipulating the cap always worked when they were doing it for their stars like Brees because he was elite. Paying Carr elite money is like Hurney restructuring Short and Olsen after injuries where we got very little return for a lot of cap space or giving Teddy and Sam almost $60M combined for just over two seasons.

Actually, I think Cam is a good comp for AR athletically. AR ran the 40 faster but in 2011, were QBs getting a huge amount of coaching up on their 40 times. I just was a bit annoyed when they tried to make it seem like AR was in another world athletically and almost act like AR was some unbelievable prospect compared to Cam. Passing wise, Cam isn’t in the same zip code and outside of the 40 time and a few inches, Cam was just as athletic and also did the 3 cone type drills which AR did not. I do think QBs are better trained for numbers now than they were in 2011.

I was getting annoyed at all the Cam isn’t a good comp for AR as if AR was beyond him. Newton’s college passing stats got him a NC and the heisman. He was so much better in college as a QB and I don’t recall a single Auburn skilled position player doing anything in the NFL. AR isn’t close to Cam now. Maybe it’s possible that he’ll get there but Cam was a way better prospect.

I trust the coaches, not the scouting. Honestly, we had exactly what we needed to get to 1 in the trade if we traded Burns. Trading Burns before his gigantic contract to get your QB of the future is a no-brained. That shows me the lack of foresight and a GM playing it safe (Rhule was gone). Imagine the flexibility of getting to #1 easily and still having 2 2nds this year. Heck we might have been able to give up 2 2nds and kept the 2024 or 2025 1st and had 2 1sts in either year along with the full set of picks.
