You got it correct, the measure of preseason success isn’t wins and losses or score. The measure of success is players executing the plays called and winning their match ups. That said, as mentioned above, there are a ton of people saying it doesn’t matter at all and that lack of effort is not a problem. Missing assignments and getting fooled by stunts is not to be expected. That’s why some of us feel a bit more concerned than we were hoped
-
We actually don’t have a ton of cap space. You can always push more down the road, but we only have about $29M of cap space right now and that’s without Burns, Houston, Chark and Chinn. We also only have 43 under contract for next year and several of those are likely PS guys like Bumper, Peoples and more. So, in all, we can create more space but it’ll be like this year where we aren’t making a splash FA signing, just bargain level shopping.

Young might have his cleats on still or that guy was 5’9” in high school and shrunk a bit. Young was 5’10” and an 1/8 at the combine. He’s not 6’. We already know that.
-
That guy wasn’t answering a question. I think he was checking the mic for Young to answer questions. He was basically saying he’s smaller than Young so the mic is fine.
-
Well said. The we will make the playoffs crowd has now become the it’s just preseason and it was silly of us to think we might make the playoffs even if we were one Horn away last year with worse talent. It is just preseason and doesn’t matter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch our play and not feel as good as we did a couple weeks ago.

I’m waiting as well, but I can’t say I’m not concerned about some of the single players we were expecting to be solid contributors.
-
Yep. I agree on the play calling and planning. I might not agree that we shouldn’t be doing a bit more since everyone is so new. Personally, I think worrying so much about people seeing your plays shouldn’t overshadow making sure your rookie QB and brand new TE/WR starters are in sync in live game action. I will very much disagree with the lack of intensity and trying to win. Go ask Frank Reich if he’s OK with the players on the field not trying or going half speed. There was an interview on the pre-game show on 99.7 interviewing Reich about the great coaches he’s worked/played under and one of them he said had a saying that you should do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. That tells me he believes in running some vanilla plays but he expects the players on the field to execute it well. I doubt Reich cares if we won today but he sure as poo cares when we don’t execute a play well.

Yep. It’s bizarre that people can’t get that. Backups and guys that don’t make the roster play most of the game so of course winning and scores don’t matter. If we drove down the field only to go for it on 4th and miss or have CB make a great end zone interception, who cares. Moving the ball effectively means more than actually scoring especially if you aren‘t running your best red zone plays. Watching a 2nd year edge rusher abuse your 2nd year LT after that LT just had a bad game the week before is concerning. Only 1 more preseason game left.

Half effort is OK? You guys are completely wrong about preseason. The reason why winning and the score doesn’t mean much is because most of the game is played by backups and guys who won’t make the final roster. Maybe the coaches are holding back plays and being vanilla but that <> not trying on the play that’s called. That doesn’t mean when the starters are out there that they are supposed to take plays off and give half effort. You can’t say you want to see players 1v1 and then say who cares about half effort. Amazing that the same people who are always so dead set that our players would never give less effort to get a draft pick are literally saying it’s OK that our players giving half effort to get ready for the season. You can’t have it both ways. If Reich only wanted players to worry about staying healthy, why the hell would he even play starters? He may not want to show his amazing double reverse but he sure as poo wants the plays to put in max effort on a simple run. He isn’t saying to Iky, don’t worry about Kayvon hitting Bryce and almost taking out Moton’s knees as long as you didn’t break a nail grabbing at his jersey on the way by.
-
Punting is not on point by either team tonight.
-
Amazing we wasted a 3rd and a 4th on him, a 5th on Mayfield and a 2nd, 4th and 6th on Darnold. SMH.
-
Refs probably laughing too much when Corral threw it so short and hit the defender in the ass.
-
Dude is so slow. Jones had a nice pressure causing one of those under throw balls that has to get picked. Instead he was still 10 yards away not making up ground on a duck.
-
Damn Iky. Got Moton hit bad. Kayvon drinking his milkshake.
-
Umm. Why no block Thibodeaux?
-
And to think people think we are deep. We need our stars out there all year or we let a guy like Jones look like a HOFer.
-
Yeah, but man Burns and Brown out and we couldn’t get a single pressure. That was way too easy against our starting D minus Burns and Brown.
-
Our TE coverage is leaving a bit to be desired.
-
No. That was within 5 yards. Press didn’t work there.
-
Agree 100%. Our drafting has been on the bad side for a while. Between the picks we’ve traded away and the reaches, we haven’t built enough talent to compete perennially yet. Young is a huge key if we do or not, but we have up a lot so we’ll have to overcome that a bit as well. We need some day 2/3 success stories. Easily replaceable starters don’t count. We need to add more above average impact guys.
-
The point wasn’t all the stars. We gave up 207 yards and 3 TDs to a guy who was having his worst year in the league up to that point because we were missing Horn. We still had Brown, Luvu, Shaq and Burns but just Horn out and the D was terrible. That’s my point about thin. I don’t think there’s a star on the team that we can replace and not have a big drop off where the opponents can take advantage. 49ers lost their starting QB, best WR and a ton of guys on D for many weeks and still had a good enough record to make the playoffs. If the Eagles lost a 10 sack guy last year, they would still have had one of the best DLs for pressuring the QB. Dallas had a backup go 4-1 and Elliott has fallen off a cliff the last 3 years and their 2nd RB has been amazing and they went 12-5. Those are 3 examples off the top of my head where teams had a lot of depth to still pressure the QB without the best pass rusher or had an offense with multiple elite guys. It’s not a bad thing. We finally got our QB and have some young talent but I think we are fooling ourselves to think we’ve got the depth of the other playoff teams. Tampa beat us to win the division and Dallas curb stomped them. Even with Wilks and the running game we were 3-8 against non-NFC South teams and that was with an easy/last place schedule. In the past couple drafts we’ve traded away 7 draft picks and that doesn’t include our 2024 1st and 2025 2nd or the 3rd we used on Corral. I’m glad to have Young but we gave away and entire draft and more of picks including 5 day 1 and day 2 picks. That’s why we are thin right now and aren’t finished with building a perennial contender.
-
We could finish 7-10 and still be vastly improved. We had a last place schedule in 2022. We play Dallas, Miami and Seattle (instead of Giants, Detroit and Denver) in our 2nd place schedule this year. We were 4-2 in division and 3-8 out of division. If Atlanta and NO seem improved as well, going 3-3 or 4-2 could be playing way better than 2022.

Dear lord. Saleh himself said what I said. I’ll let you win. I did a bad job of describing the ironic link between his cancelling day 2 of joint practices with Tampa (those poor guys) because he saw no benefit in day 2 due to injury risks and his #2 competitor (behind Bills) possibly losing their LT in a joint practice on day 2 of joint practices with Houston. He still needs an MRI but is seems like Armstead may be fine as well, which is great since he’s not a Saint.
-
Damn, you folks and your aliases are all out right now. I’m so sorry that I found something ironic because we had a big thread on Saleh and joint practices and then a key player on one of his two top rivals goes down in a joint practice the day after everyone was bashing him. Have fun thinking you guys got me on a technicality if that makes you feel better. We all win that way!
-
Huh? What did I say was wrong? Saleh said why he didn’t like day 2s. I said zero about his commitment because I could care less if he F’d over Tampa. I am glad we are so concerned about Tampa’s plight, lol.
