It’s not a bad trade but not trading Burns hurts. Love Burns but that was more than enough to make the trade and then we would have had our full set of picks to put some weapons around him this year and the next two.
-
We should have traded Burns before paying him $30M a year. The picks from the Rams would have been enough to trade up. Then we’d have all the picks we traded and Moore. I’d much rather have 2 2nds and a 1st and Moore than Burns at $30M.

New trade down theory coming out of League circles
WhoKnows replied to Growl's topic in Carolina Panthers
Yep. Really nervous. Had we made the Burns trade, I wouldn’t be. With the extra cap space and 3 top picks, I think you could get enough value to not flinch about a QB trade up. Without all that, if we make a QB mistake we could be watching the Bears or Arizona trade out of the spot for teams who want Caleb Williams or Maye or whoever or watch them get Marvin Harrison Jr. Best case is we really like Richardson or Levis and they fall to 9. -
We did trade CMC for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and a 5th to basically get back Sam and CJ’s picks which were a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th. What we traded away of course were early in the round picks and what we got back were late in the round picks, so you could say value wise that we traded away CMC and a 4th or 5th to get Sam and CJ. Not a good trade, but oh well. Teddy’s trade was Gilmore, so that was a wash but we did also waste a 4th and a 3rd on Corral as well, again early round picks. I want a WB bad but I really hope we can get him at 9. Something tells me that trading up coupled with not trading Burns is going hurt watching the drafts unfold this year and the next two. Hopefully, we get the next Mahomes and don’t care.

Sorry, I just don’t get this. A 5-7 win team over the past 5 years and we want to “stay competitive”? What does that even mean? If we know we can’t compete for a SB, it’s a waste. The goal is to compete for a SB. The rookie QB progression is all that matters especially if we gutted our draft picks to get him. This isn’t a Mahomes situation where we already have Smith and went to the playoffs the prior few seasons. The Chiefs won their division the two years prior to Mahomes starting going 22-10. We have 22 wins in the past four years. Same with Lance and Garrapolo, although clearly Lance wasn’t ready but SF was a playoff team already. Our situation is like the Bengals with Burrow, Chargers with Herbert, Bills with Allen, Jax with Lawrence, Jets with Wilson (didn’t work), maybe Miami with Tua (injury delayed start) and maybe Jones with NE where they got rid of Cam as the vet.
-
He’s already cost himself a lot of money by not having an agent and might not even be in this situation. The did a talk on him during the combine and the announcer made great points that an agent would have never let him play year 4 for only $1.7M and would never have let him play the 5th year without a new deal. Baltimore paid a former MVP $25M for his last two years. Lamar is already behind money wise and now he’s negotiating after finishing two years up with injuries losing 1 playoff game without him and missing the playoffs due to a backup starting multiple games to end the year.
-
Both very reasonable conclusions. That’s a lot of guarantees and two firsts. Also, injuries are a huge concern. We know what Cam went through with all of the surgeries and he never missed the end of the season two years in a row and he also never missed a playoff game. How many QBs have missed the end of two consecutive seasons missing the playoff game one year and having their injury cause then to miss the playoff the other year? The Ravens have won 1 playoff game in 5 years. Jackson is 1-3 and his injuries cost them one playoff game and one playoff appearance. He has 4 total TDs and 7 turnovers in 4 playoff games. We can call is collusion, but there are very valid reasons for the Ravens being cautious. Clearly the Carr and Jones contracts show that people are still spending money on QBs but those deals are basically two year deals. Jackson is looking for 3-4x the guaranteed money and while he has been a better QB, that guarantee the whole deal cost is another level.

What’s wrong with Levis’ accuracy? At Kentucky, his completion % is identical to Young and only 3.6% below Stroud. Levi’s clearly was under more pressure with much worse skilled teammates, so unlike AR, I’m not sure I see accuracy issues. Bad decisions, sure, but how much of that is situation. I’d be way more concerned about AR’s accuracy in terms of fixing it. I have no idea who will be the best but if Levis is the staff’s choice I hope he does well. Unlike Lance and Wilson, Levi’s at least has tape against top teams.

The Ravens can’t be this dumb? They’re a smart organization right?

Bengals part was sarcasm! Also, Lamar was not looking good otherwise it would have been a bad loss. I think Lamar had already been hurt or was banged up. Personally, I know he can be great but I think we’re seeing what we saw with Cam’s shoulder. The shoulder is worse for a QB as Lamar could ease back on the running but if the threat to run diminishes, is he a good enough pass only QB. You have to be careful rushing him and worry about spying him. If defenses don’t have to do that receivers aren’t as open and pass rush isn’t so slow. It may take a few years but it feels similar and missing the end of two consecutive years puts up a bay signal that the Ravens are obviously taking serious. -

And it wasn’t even that close. Baltimore had 6 possessions in our territory to start the game and got 3 or 6 points. Hard to think someone would forget that we barely moved the ball and lost. But hey, at least we beat Burrow. -
How about Marvin Harrison Jr? Joe Burrow’s first draft after he joined the Bengals got him Chase. We are competing for a title with a rookie. We don’t have a complete team yet. I’d rather the rookie get experience and if he loses more than a vet early, who cares? Now, we are likely throwing all our picks in the mix so draft will be a lot less impact anyway. Did it matter to the Bills, Bengals or Jax or LAC (Tua was hurt so can’t use him) to have them start as rookies?
-
49ers had a complete team before they trade up. That’s why they did it. They were hoping to get the missing piece. Same with the CMC trade. Did we lose in the conference championship last year and lose in the SB in 2019? Well if we did that and traded 3 picks for Stroud, it would be apples to apples. We aren’t in the same zip code of contender the past 3 years so if we missed on a mega deal like they did, we wouldn’t be OK.
-
Shoot higher. Rams are looking to trade some solid players, so I’d keep their picks and trade ours. Also, here’s the haul: Rams 2023 2nd (pick 36) Rams 2024 1st Rams 2025 1st Multiple FAs using Burns’ cap space $25-30M a year. Don’t care about replacing Burns, there are guys like Ngakoue, Reddick, Judon and this is the deepest edge rusher class in years. I only would have cared about the overall value we could have gotten like getting our franchise QB and still have multiple 2nds and 2024/2025 1sts to put weapons around the rookie QB say like a top TE in a deep class this year and maybe a guy like Marvin Harrison Jr next year. Now we’ll have Burns, a rookie QB and the same weapons we have now.
-
If we have to sign a vet because a QB we take top 10 is not ready to start, that would be disappointing. A vet like Brissett doesn’t make us a contender, play the rookie.
-
Problem is we didn’t trade Burns and we have the 9th pick. We’re aren’t in the best spot to own our destiny so to speak. I like the coaching staff a lot but there are no guarantees and Carr to the Saints may make us impulsive.
-
We better make the right call, otherwise we’ll have an expensive Burns with a shitty offense for 3 more years while our division is ripe for a great team. If we give up a ton of draft capital for the wrong guy, especially after not trading Burns, it’s going to suck.
-
This. Manipulating the cap always worked when they were doing it for their stars like Brees because he was elite. Paying Carr elite money is like Hurney restructuring Short and Olsen after injuries where we got very little return for a lot of cap space or giving Teddy and Sam almost $60M combined for just over two seasons.

Actually, I think Cam is a good comp for AR athletically. AR ran the 40 faster but in 2011, were QBs getting a huge amount of coaching up on their 40 times. I just was a bit annoyed when they tried to make it seem like AR was in another world athletically and almost act like AR was some unbelievable prospect compared to Cam. Passing wise, Cam isn’t in the same zip code and outside of the 40 time and a few inches, Cam was just as athletic and also did the 3 cone type drills which AR did not. I do think QBs are better trained for numbers now than they were in 2011.
-
I was getting annoyed at all the Cam isn’t a good comp for AR as if AR was beyond him. Newton’s college passing stats got him a NC and the heisman. He was so much better in college as a QB and I don’t recall a single Auburn skilled position player doing anything in the NFL. AR isn’t close to Cam now. Maybe it’s possible that he’ll get there but Cam was a way better prospect.

I trust the coaches, not the scouting. Honestly, we had exactly what we needed to get to 1 in the trade if we traded Burns. Trading Burns before his gigantic contract to get your QB of the future is a no-brained. That shows me the lack of foresight and a GM playing it safe (Rhule was gone). Imagine the flexibility of getting to #1 easily and still having 2 2nds this year. Heck we might have been able to give up 2 2nds and kept the 2024 or 2025 1st and had 2 1sts in either year along with the full set of picks.
