I would have taken a shot. Never really cared for Ron. I don’t think he’s a good coach that improves a team/makes it better. He needs an MVP on offense and defense to win and even then he only won in the playoffs (usually better coaches) with the extremely talented 2015 team.

Von Miller: The Panthers were the better team
WhoKnows replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
It was called and he said he did it on purpose because the ball was inside the 3 already. That was when we scored the TD so he figured fug it, 1st and goal at the 3 yard line or 1.5 yard line is the same thing. I still think that a healthy KB was sorely missed. He had zero issues week 1 against that same D and Talib and their secondary can’t toss him around like Ginn and Brown. I know KB went off the rails but it sucked not to have him there against that D. -
Von Miller: The Panthers were the better team

Yep. I understand the ref blame game but Miller is clearly not referring to that. The game was truly lost by our poor coaching staff. They had two future HOF edge rushers and we didn’t adjust in any way. I can’t remember which Bronco defender said after the game that they knew exactly what we were doing, but that showed that they prepared for the game and Ron/Dave just assumed Cam and Luke would save the day. We had the more talented team and they had way better coaching. That’s what Miller means. -
If GMs watched the senior bowl, he likely wouldn’t have even been drafted. Reminds me of Little. Both of them dropped like rocks after they got into the apples to apples pre draft events. We just happened to stop both of their falls. While I wasn’t upset about taking a chance on Brown until after we used another 6th on a long snapper, Brown should not have been the pick. We at least corrected ourselves by taking Mays a year later, but Trey Smith was a ridiculously easy pick for us in the 6th. His athleticism was way beyond Brown’s and his day 2 talent was worth the health risk. With our OL concerns, we should have gone Smith and Brown in the 6th and ignored LS until UDFA.

First, I was responding to Rivera not having a GM as if Ron was some sort of Bill Belichick mind that did amazing with the paucity of talent and trying to compare his OL talent with Rivers’s current OL. Rivera had a lot of talent on the 4 playoff teams with DG and the coaching was the issue not the OL. Denver had two HOF edge rushers and we did nothing to counter them on a horrible field. Second, according to Gross, he retired and knew he was going to retire in 2013. https://www.si.com/.amp/nfl/2014/07/29/jordan-gross-weight-retirement-panthers Third, if you are going to bring Norwell and Turner into it, at least acknowledge that Norwell signed with Jax a year after Gettleman was fired and Turner was also not extended until after Gettleman was fired. Gettleman didn’t make either thing happen. Fourth, I am again not saying Gettleman was some special GM but he did bring in a bunch of OL and didn’t ignore it like Hurney 2.0 and Rivera in Washington. See “first” again on why I mentioned Gettleman at all, nothing to do with saying Gettleman was good. Lastly, it gets really annoying when people try to say the OL from 2014-2017 wasn’t good or talented. They were. You don’t go 22-2 with a bad OL and the 2015 OL was ranked top 5 and in a couple rankings #2 after Dallas. 2016 was injury lalapalooza and 2017 was good again even with speed bump. 4 of the 5 OL in 2017 were previously or currently pro bowlers or all pros. The talent was there, especially on the interior and Williams was 2nd team all-pro in 2017 but unfortunately got hurt in 2018. Lastly part deux, I am again not saying DG was great but OL was actually an area he got a lot of talent but LT is some sort of a trigger word in so people don’t see the rest of the OL.
-
Umm, even though I know Gettleman made tons of mistakes, the 2013-2017 teams Ron had were very, very talented and had OL talent. Aside from the refs, it was Ron and Don who lost the SB. Again, Gettleman wasn’t good but Andrew Thomas, the guy he got a lot of flak for, is a top LT and he drafted/signed Moton, Norwell, Turner, Williams (was 2nd team all-pro before injury) and Oher (also solid before the concussion) in 5 drafts while already having Ryan as C. One thing Gettleman did was bring in young talented OL. It was Hurney’s call to not resign Norwell and do nothing in the draft OL wise outside of the fantastic swing and miss of Little. In 3 drafts, Hurney 2.0 got Daley and Little, smh.

Yeah, I never understood this “great blocker” phenomenon. I recall it being said to support the contract we signed but I feel like I recall far more failed blocks in clips on here over amazing blocks.

As much hopefulness we can have with the new coaches and Young, I’m glad we aren’t signing guys like this. We spent like drunken sailors since Rhule started and frankly, wasted it on teams that were never going to compete for a championship. Mayfield, Darnold and Teddy will never win a SB as a real starter, not a one game injury replacement. I’m excited about Young, been wanting a top rookie since Cam, but I know we aren’t at the KC, Philly, Buffalo, Bengal, SF (with a real QB), etc. level yet. There’s nothing wrong with saying that after 29 wins in 5 years. We have plenty of holes and Yannick isn’t adding enough to spend $10M we can rollover to use in Young year 2/3.

Panthers sign former pro bowl LB Deion Jones
WhoKnows replied to Panthercougar68's topic in Carolina Panthers
Don’t like seeing shoulder injuries on defenders. Short was never the same and we wasted a ton of money. He also clearly hasn’t been as effective the last few years compared to his earlier years. There’s a reason the Falcons let him go at 27 and Cleveland didn’t try to resign him at 28. He’s not old so hopefully this is a prove it contract for him to show he still has it for one more extension. -
Coaching (and some refs) cost us the SB. The OL was fantastic aside from 2 games in that 25 game run. It was stupid for us to make no adjustments to stop two HOF edge rushers. That’s why Belichick wins SBs and Rivera/Shula do not. That said 2016’s OL rash of injuries had nothing to do with that or Norman. Sometimes you get good health luck and sometimes you don’t.

Feels like it was 2016 so please don’t jinx us. 2015 was the realization that the gelling at the end of 2014 put us in good shape. I know I’ve mentioned this since it happened, but I was at the training camp day when TD and Kalil were going at it and Kalil hurt his shoulder. He was pissed and went only with the trainer to the far field (it was empty) and TD walked all the way over there. I remembered it clearly later in the year when we were starting our 3rd different C that year. That was also the start of the end of his career.

Me too a little bit. More worried about the interior. Injuries are huge. Look at 2015 to 2016 and 2017. The biggest issue we had in 2016 is a rash of injuries. Health of an OL is key. Part of the Falcons success in 2016 was that the starting OL was literally healthy all year. Huge benefit from a healthy. Zavala already put a couple weeks and Corbett still out. We have Bozeman, Mays and BC right now. We’d have a tough time with a couple more injuries, especially on the outside. Knock on wood that we maintain health.
-
He was kind of always overrated IMHO. It would be nice but he’s never been on Wagner’s level. He had awful PFF rankings last year in Cleveland and the Falcons were not interested in keeping him, nor were the Browns.
-
He didn’t do great. He was the WR2 and got 90% of all snaps when healthy. Down the stretch when we were going for the playoffs he had 11-170 and 0 TDs in 6 games. That’s not great. Personally, I’m not a believer in TMJ. I’m hoping Mingo breaks out as our guy because I think he’s got a higher ceiling than what we’ve seen in 2 years from TMJ. I do think we need one more WR1 or WR2 (depends on Mingo) with Thielen’s age and Chark being a 1 year guy. Maybe one of our 1st/2nds the next two years.

I was the tank engineer and my wish was always Lawrence with a Fields at worst. It still boggles my mind that Lawrence and Fields went almost wire to wire 1 and 2 for 3 years and somehow in a couple dazzling practice throws that two guys, and almost Jones, jumped between them. Not sure what the future lies for both of them but it certainly was not surprising to see what happened.
-
We just need him to stay healthy. The biggest issue is not finishing the season. Lamar eventually signed but the biggest concern was that he was getting dinged and missing playoff appearances. His unavailability at the end of the year ended Baltimore’s playoffs (lost in first round and missed) the last two seasons. Horn’s injury last year was in fact a blessing in disguise as we’d still be hunting for a QB, but at the time his unavailability did cost us a playoff opportunity. Again, I’m glad it did because no chance we move up from the 20s. Chicago needed T and our pick wasn’t a good spot for that and we’d have had to likely give up more 1st/2nds.

The guys in here who don’t like non optimistic complaining, spend most of their posts complaining about complaining. It’s kind of funny to watch.

He played 7 games. He also got hurt in two of those games playing closer to half games rather than full games, scoring basically for $13.5M we got 6 full games. We were 5-11, he was OK and he never played again after us. We should have just been going hard after Lawrence and traded Turner for any pick, like we finally decided this year to stop ducking around at QB.

Last year WRs got lesser salaries? Hill signed a huge deal. AJ Brown got a huge deal. Deebo Samuel got a huge deal. Adams signed a big extension. Kupp signed a big extension. Diggs signed a huge extension. Metcalf signed a big extension. McLaurin signed a big extension. Even our own (at the time) DJ Moore signed a big extension. That’s 9 for 9 in the top WR salaries that signed extensions in the 2022 off-season. That’s the exact opposite of what you said. WRs got paid last year, nothing close to what’s happening to RBs this year. Source: https://overthecap.com/position/wide-receiver

They literally always do. I feel like Joey Bosa was the last time a rookie had a contentious hold out in a decade and he missed no actual game time.
-
I don’t get why this is even exciting anymore. Is Joey Bosa the only rookie that held out for a bit during the past decade? Rookies signing deals based on a pretty fixed scale is not a big deal. Was there even a chance Young wouldn’t sign before camp? No.

Garrett’s only played 6 seasons. He was drafted 2 years before Burns. At this same time Garrett had 42.5 sacks in 51 games to Burns 38 sacks in 64 games. Burns has played almost a season more games in his first four years. Garrett was also named to the All-pro team twice and he took another step in year 5 and 6. Hopefully Burns takes the next step as well but he is a tier below Garrett even just in the first four years. Inflation will put him in the same tier contract wise.

So a round after YGM?

Seems like Tennessee is where old WRs go to retire. Julio first and now Hopkins. Seems like maybe they should have just stuck with AJ Brown. They haven’t really had a lot of success lately in GM department. There’s a lot of guys who are surprisingly still available. Many of them are big names but most seem like they still have something in the tank. Will be interesting to see if some take low ball offers or just say call me when guys get hurt.

Pre training camp sucks balls.
