I don’t care about Dave’s money and again that $21M doesn’t matter. After Brown, Luvu and Burns, we have no big contracts coming down the pipeline, especially without our 2024 1st. Before this year when Burns made a business decision, he was absolutely a better pass rusher and more valuable. I still would have taken the Rams deal in a heartbeat. Don’t forget that Burns is also 2 years younger than Sweat as well. Sweat only signed a 4 year extension and he’ll still be 30/31 in his last two years. Burns could sign a 4 year deal and won’t hit 30 until a year after the deal is done. He’s more valuable and I don’t think the league has ever said Sweat was. Sweat’s also has been on more talented DLs overall. I’d still rather have the picks and cap space but I’d take Burns for 4 years all things equal instead of Sweat. Shark move still would have been to trade Burns and use the 2nd to trade for Sweat and still had 2 1sts and $5-10M a year for a FA, but that would require a smart person running the show.

I don’t think NFL people think Sweat is better than Burns. I am 100% all in for trading him (Rams deal was a no brainer except for our dumbass) but I would definitely tag and see if you can get trade bites. We have Brown and Luvu and that’s it for a few more years. Iky and Young aren’t getting big time second contracts. Horn will be lucky to get big money. Our cap space is not going to be an issue for a long time. It’s worth the $21M for one year to try and get better than a late 3rd. We’ll likely blow that money on mediocre offensive spots if we have it to spend.

It isn’t almost always. It’s always. You can’t build a team from FA. It’s not possible. You can augment a good team and make them better but you have to draft well. If we don’t draft well this year and in 2025, the Canales era will be over before it starts.

Oh, I know. I just looked at it and laughed when Hurney took our only good player. The worst part is that even though I like Brown, damn it does suck that we were 1 pick from Herbert. While we’d have screwed up elsewhere having our QB issues resolved in 2020 would have been nice. We spent so much poo on QBs that could have been used elsewhere. I can’t believe I’d ever say this, but Herbert might have saved Hurney’s job to avoid the worst GM ever.
-
Brown was a Rhule/Hurney pick. There isn’t a single pick in 3 Fitterer drafts where I’d say we want to extend that player on an 2nd deal and that we got plus value for the pick. You could say Hubbard or BC, but they are absolutely replacement level players and a guy like Hubbard is a backup on every team except the idiot team that thought Miles Sanders was worth the biggest RB FA deal.
-
JFC, I never even thought of it that way but I agree. We could have done nothing and skipped all of our picks and been better off because we’d still have #1 overall, Moore and our 2025 2nd. Heck, we could have gone to any draft board and let it auto draft for us and it would have been way better. Probably would have gotten Jalen Carter and a TE/WR at our two 2nds (assuming Shitterer still trades CMC) not named Mingo.
-
WR is probably my only interest. Normally enjoy watching the combine and reading about who did well, especially in the positional drills. Since we don’t have our 1st rounder, it has taken a good chunk of the fun out of the draft process. For the folks that think the combine is a silly show and doesn’t matter just remember how good Stroud looked in the QB drills and that Young didn’t participate.

It’s almost funny that some people in here think if we extend Burns we are suddenly OK. We have an old and very talent poor roster right now. The only way we get out of that is via the draft. The cap discussion is almost stupid at this point. We have plenty for Brown, Luvu and Burns and guess what? There’s not another player from the 2021-2023 drafts that we actually need to worry about extending. Horn? Never plays. Iky? He was awful last year and doesn’t look like a LT. Burns would have 15 sacks every year if he played for NO, Tampa or Atlanta against Iky. Extend Young? Nah, we already discuss his replacement. We don’t even have a 1st in 2024 or a 2nd in 2025. We’ll likely blow a ton of cap on mediocre FAs as we have the past few years but realistically we won’t have cap issues for at least 5 or 6 years. There is literally nothing to discuss besides our next few drafts. Signing Burns for $20M or $30M is honestly meaningless. Getting 2 firsts for him, sure that’s a true impact to our future but that ship sailed.

Correct.
-
Damn. Most comparable QB to Young was Wilson.
-
You’ll know how well we drafted based on how many 2023 rookies make the team this year. If they all do, make other Sunday plans. If they don’t that should be good news for the 2024 draft.
-
It is incomplete, not because they’ll get better, but because we will need to know what we should subtract from the already failing grade. We’ll see who we could have had at #1 overall this year and high in the 2nd in 2025. We already are down Jalen Carter, so two more subtractions and I’m not even counting that Tank Dell went 8 picks after the 2nd we gave the Bears for Young. Damn, Fitterer was so fuging bad.
-
That’s why I didn’t want Morgan. The past 3 drafts were so bad even compared to the rough drafts Hurney had past round 1 in 2018/2019. I felt like Fitterer was Hurney’s clone because of all the reaching but then you add on top his horrific trading and not even being good in the first with 3 top 8 picks no less. There’s literally nothing to point to to feel confident about Morgan’s three years as Fitterer’s right hand man. The whole I want dawgz comment may get some folks juices running, but not mine. I just want to see actual good drafts where we get great value and improve the team. IDGAF if our GM is a former LB tough guy who hypes up the crowd or is some skinny nerd who can’t lift 25 pounds. Whoever drafts better is who has my vote. We’ll see soon if we’ve got a chance to get back to the playoffs anytime soon.

Josina Anderson thoughts on the Burns situation
WhoKnows replied to ncfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
It’s still amazing to me how many people in here couldn’t see how ridiculously good that offer was when you added the three picks plus the ability to sign two $15M a year FAs for Burns. At least those of us who understood the full value have been exonerated but it still sucks because being right meant our idiot GM was proven wrong yet again. -
Hard to tell if someone doesn’t go through the draft process. Look at Greg Little. Marty, unfortunately, had a hard on for the guy but had he stayed in school he could have easily dropped. He was a top/1st round prospect until he looked awful at the combine position drills. We caught the falling knife and his career turned out to be exactly what we saw at the combine. So a player could have had a great grade because they never got scrutinized or they dropped because they had a not as good year. Also, early draft material is all over the place so if you combed every site/talking head there would be 60 players who all were in one or more first rounds.
-
Honestly, I think he may just be bad at LT pass blocking. Burns would have his best game ever if he played against Iky. Fast, quick off the ball edge rushers can get around Iky so fast it’s crazy. Maybe he’s just slow off the ball and can fix that but damn he just looks like he doesn’t have the footwork or god given athleticism to stop a fast edge rusher.
-
We need to have a strategy. Take OL flyers late, especially guys who did well at big schools but for whatever reason didn’t go early like Norwell out of Ohio State or Smith (Tennessee) or Williams (Oklahoma). Don’t take projects who looked bad pre-draft like Deonte or waste picks like long snappers. We tried to fix our Smith mistake with Mays and Zavala but they haven’t looked good. Still needs to continue but TBH, our scouting department has been god awful at finding good value.
-
God forbid he gets bull rushed and falls on top of Young. Oh the humanity!
-
Damn, I really wish we could rewrite history. Personally, I am not a QB so all I wanted was a rookie QB. I wasn’t happy giving up what we did either, but that was likely more from being pissed that we didn’t tank (trade Burns, CMC and DJ for 3 1sts and 2 2nds) and that we could have likely used the Burns trade/value to move up and still have the 2024 1st. I will say that in hindsight, I’m shocked Yoong was QB1. His arm strength was shocking to watch.

Getting Crunch Time for the Panthers and Brian Burns
WhoKnows replied to 45catfan's topic in Carolina Panthers
I’ve been an NFL fan longer than the Panthers have been around and I’d say Fitterer is easily the worst GM ever. The negative impact he’s had is astounding. Even a guy like Matt Mullen at least drafted a HOFer. I wouldn’t be surprised if not a single player in 3 years of drafting even makes a pro-bowl for us. If he was adamant about not taking a game changing trade for Burns then he should have had a freaking extension signed that day. It’s been 1.5 seasons since he turned down the trade and Burns’ value has plummeted. We could have kept DJ and CMC and used the Burns picks to move up. SMH, instead we’ll probably get a late 3rd round comp pick. -
2017 was our last good draft. Moton, Samuel, CMC and Butker. We’ve had Burns, Brown and DJ as good picks since the 2018 draft. We’ve gotten other starters but replaceable/meh ones that likely wouldn’t start on good teams. Including the last good draft, 3 of those 7 are still Panthers and one is a FA unless we tag him. The 2018-2023 drafts are littered with terrible picks. It’s honestly amazing how bad we’ve drafted the past 6 drafts. Even 2016 with Bradberry, Butler and Worley seems decent in comparison to drafts where we picked a heck of a lot higher than 30th. If you look at pick locations, the 2016 draft slots are about what we have in 2024. Only difference is we traded away #1 overall instead of going to the Super Bowl. We have to turn around the drafts. No amount of FAs will turn us into a good team. Having multiple good drafts is the only way. We have to hit on not just starters, but above average starters compared to other NFL teams.

Locked on Panthers: Why the Panthers should pay Derrick Brown
WhoKnows replied to jayboogieman's topic in Carolina Panthers
Botch it? Wait till we hear that we traded Brown away for picks so we could extend Burns.
