Our WR room is looking pretty diverse. We're a lot taller than we're used to which is nice. Name (Age) Height | 40 time Adam Thielen (32) 6'2 | ~4.5 (guesstimate) Terrace Marshall Jr. (22) 6'2 | 4.38 DJ Chark (26) 6'4 | 4.34 Jonathan Mingo (22) 6'2 | 4.46 Laviska Shenault (24) 6'1 | 4.58 Shi Smith (24) 5'10 | 4.43 Damiere Byrd (30) 5'9 | ~4.4 (was 4.28 as a rookie)

Mike Kaye explains DJ Johnson pick

Yeah, definitely curious if we're staying at 114 or trying to gain multiple picks out of that. -

I mean, I'm used to it at this point. We did it with Corral. We did it with Christensen. And we've done the inverse where we gain multiple picks, and that turned into guys like Tremble and Shi. So it's a choose your own adventure, there's ways to gain capital back. -

Yeah we just gotta get over our crushes. I mean, I was ALL about Adebawore, thought he was going higher. Brugler had him mocked to the Eagles at 30. Really surprised he's still out there who is a bit like Tuli but mega-athletic. Can similarly play anywhere from 3-Tech hands in dirt, to standing at the EDGE. Both of those guys are just very unique with massive potential. We clearly wanted an edge setter, no tweeners. Agree on Foskey and White though, they may be more suited having their hands in the dirt. Looking forward, I wouldn't look past us adding a OL & DL today instead of skill spots. Would love Adebawore, Abanikanda or Whyle but I won't be pissing and moaning if it doesn't happen. -

There's always a mammoth of perceived "reaches" in the 2nd-3rd. That's where team scouts vs. online rankings always diverge like crazy. No matter the rumors or who we heard likes who. It is never what it seems, these scouting rooms have their own world separate from the web. I.E. -- Tyler Scott is still on the board who was supposedly rocketing up team boards and impressing a lot. Scruggs G/C went 62 overall who many had pegged as a late rounder. Strange went ahead of Tucker Kraft. Reed was WR6 head of Hyatt, Tillman, Rice, Downs. Torrence fell to the late 50s. We picked a guy who was projected on more than a few sites as a 3rd-4th rounder so DJ doesn't seem like a reach. I think people are a bit underwhelmed bc he's older and has some stuff to work out, but you gotta consider ceiling with EDGE rushers. And last but not least, we had to meet our 'guys named DJ' quota. -

I see what you're saying. I'm not mad about it just trying to assess. Ojulari doesn't have good burst, but his bend, lateral movement and pursuit is top level. I can see why team's viewed him fringe 1st/early 2nd. Once TEN's Byron Young went, I think the remaining EDGE's we liked were thinning out. I mean, there were a TON that went in 2-3. Hall, BJ, Foskey, Tuli, White flew off the board after the Mingo pick. That was a risk we took with landing a fave offensive weapon instead of one of them first. Seems like we definitely had a positional fill in mind over BPA here, which, I guess is fine. There were some really solid DBs & RBs available but I won't fret. Have to think we had DJ Johnson in a tier above McGuire, Henry, etc. that made him worthy of the trade up. YaYa Diaby was taken right after who is old as well, but a bit more explosive IMO. He's on the team now so all we can do is hope for the best! -
Abanikanda would be fun at 114. With the WR room pretty much set, I want someone with afterburners on offense. Darius Rush, Kelee Ringo, Jay Ward, Trice, all potential CBs The guard and tackle class is about to come back into the picture this draft as well. We may be going that route to protect Bryce. Josh Whyle & Zach Kuntz are still viable TEs that could beat out Thomas and/or Tremble for TE2. Could be a future starter.

My only questioning is what sets DJ apart from Isaiah McGuire, Hampton, or KJ Henry at EDGE. They must see something specific in him that set him apart to trade up for. -
Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon

Are we suddenly not trusting this staff bc of disparities between online rankings and the scouting dept? Cmon people, we pretend to be all rah-rah and then bc it’s an unexpected get bent out of shape? They obviously see something. Let them prove themselves -

Long EDGE and even NFL.com had him pegged as a 3rd-4th rounder. Not really a reach, just a dude not many looked at, myself included. 6'4 260 4.49, I mean if this mad-dog of a defensive staff likes him, let's see what's up. -

Kinda underwhelming but whatevs -
This is the overlooked aspect. Teams left a lot of solid EDGE FAs available with how deep this draft is. Don't need to force anything but if we wanna use a future 5th/6th to move up a tad, that ain't no thang but a chicken wing.

DJ Turner, Julius Brents, Tuli, Ojulari, Adebawore, plenty of stellar options. Why not at this point
-
Vegas could be the squad that trades up for him. They found Carr in the second, could be a similar deal this time around. There would be a bit less pressure on the team to waste Jimmy and vice versa with forcing Levis in. He could sit a bit, but work out nicely sooner than later. McDaniels' system is a bit much compared to others, but he's got the experience in a pro-system so he has a bit of a head start.

I really like this kid. Think we may have landed a type of QB that hasn't been seen before and he seems to have been raised into a really upstanding person. I'm honestly thrilled. There really is no comp. A bit of Flutie, a bit of Brees, a bit of mini-Mahomes, and even a bit of peak Jeff Garcia, a tad of Russ. Shades of many, not exactly like any. -
Ade Adebawore & Tuli Tuipulotu are 2 dudes we should not be overlooking. Really high potential, multi-front guys. Could see them being anywhere from a 3-4 EDGE to a 4-3 3-Tech. Really different types of dudes compared to year's past.

DAY 2: Best of the Rest Big Board by Positions of Interest
Bear Hands replied to MHS831's topic in Carolina Panthers
Bolded my faves. Relooking at this list, Michael Mayer, Joey Porter Jr. & Brian Branch may be the only one I'd say warrant us not listening for calls at pick 39. I'd also say Adebawore is a BIG name missing. His name is coming up sooner than later tonight. He's unique in being a 3-4 guy that can play in the dirt or standing. Super athletic. Branch is like Antonio Johnson who is entirely capable at playing NB as well as S. Fluid defender. I like Ojulari but he has a lack of burst that drops him from the pound-the-table list. He reminds me of Jordan Willis some years back. Liked him as a prospect but the lack of burst just really held him back. He's had good moments but I'd like more star upside. I kind of like Hall better. Bill Musgrave's son has too many injuries for me to be excited but LaPorta or Kraft would be pretty dope. Can see having an impact earlier than normal for a TE. Huge Turner & Brents fan. Would welcome either. -

Did Malik or Corral stick around? I forgot if they did or not.

The "Will Levis" that attended the S2 test was really Shane Steichen in a scooby-doo style skin suit.
