I am rooting for the GIANTS tonight and you should too!
Bear Hands replied to TheBigKat's topic in Carolina Panthers
It's going to be a fun game. Said it elsewhere, high likelihood our next HC is calling plays in this one. -
I'm firmly on the Steichen or Kafka bus right now. I'll try my best to be excited if it's Moore, Dorsey or Reich. Still really unsure about retaining Wilks & highly doubt Evero or Caldwell is happening. It's pretty much a wait and see at this point. Giants-Eagles could likely have our next HC on the sidelines.

It’s shaping up to be a very good TE draft but certain teams and peeps don’t value them highly. We’ll see. I guess it will Al depend on our new HC and scheme. A guy to keep tabs on is Schoonmaker as a late 2nd to 3rd rounder. He’s got skills.

I've got a few names, some mentioned: Luke Musgrave TE, Dalton Kincaid TE, Drew Sanders LB, Jack Campbell LB, Rashee Rice WR, Josh Downs WR, Zay Flowers WR. I really like all of them. Later in the second, Daiyan Henley LB WSU with that SF 2nd or Mike Morris DE Michigan has a lot of upside. Zach Charbonnet is my fave RB, could be that late second or our 3rd.

People seem to be sleeping on Mike Kafka as a candidate
Bear Hands replied to Ricky Spanish's topic in Carolina Panthers
I'd imagine a bit of both. Given they barely knew each other before NYG, it at the least shows he's able to fold into a staff and implement very well. The baseline assumptions are strong with him. -
All I'll say is the Giants v. Eagles game should be fun because I think it's likely our next coach is calling plays in it. Which side of the field that dude is on is TBD.

All I've seen is that Reich impressed via Sheena Quick. No word on how Steichen was received via vid conference, but I think we're following up with an in-person for him if I recall. Didn't hear anything on Caldwell (wouldn't put too much stock in that) or Evero. Kafka's interview on Sunday may be once they're officially out of contention (or) it could be pushed if they win. If the latter is the case, Steichen could get flown in sooner than expected. If the former is and it goes well, we could hear news early next week.

Thanks for making this a thread. It’s a great read. Something I like is that he doesn’t carry a lot of extra. Checking out interviews and mic’d up bits, you’ll see he doesn’t have this rah-rah personality or come across either overly tough nosed, some specialty program creator, or trying to act like some grand offensive chess wizard. The article backs this up, just seems like a smart and get sh*t done type. No extra. Just very even keel, sound, and seems to carry himself in a way that seems much more seasoned and a guy who simply loves coaching and scheming. Not trying to self market or fluff or give off a certain bravado. The anti-Rhule. -
Digging into the remaining to get excited again (and hopefully not let down haha): This Mike Kafka has seemingly had a super fast rise out of nowhere, but a recent Athletic article has some great insight to it all; someone else linked this earlier as well: https://theathletic.com/4104453/2023/01/19/giants-mike-kafka-nfl-head-coach-candidate/ In watching clips of him, he has a very dry, no "extra" style to him whether in pressers, talking about his coaching & whatnot. Seems very even keel, straight shooter which is like the exact opposite of Rhule. It could be something I see Fitt, Tepper, & Morgan digging. No particular bravado, just looks engaged and someone who wants to get sh*t done. I like that. It doesn't with spectacle and he's not some rah-rah type. Good early track record. It would be a big swing at someone with his limited experience but I'm liking what I'm finding. To do what he did this year for a team with virtually no wide receiver room, a struggling QB in his final year of a rookie deal, a still developing OL, and really only Barkley as the for-sure thing, is impressive. It sounds like he was also much more intertwined in Mahomes development than I knew. I thought he came in after Mahomes was already a star, but it sounds like he had a nice impact on Pat early on. Very interesting guy. Would not be mad one bit, and I can see him impressing. This is his latest midst the HC interviews. He seems much more seasoned than some of these other young guys like B Johnson and Moore. Interesting cat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDSZM7j1GS4&ab_channel=NewYorkGiants

He was given a bad hand in Arizona, but that shouldn't discount looking at what happened that may be causes for concern on his end. If anything it just masked deficiencies since it sounds like we're essentially saying that year is voided from his resume. He did seem better as our interim in the HC spot after being out of football and then in Missouri. I give the guy mad credit, but again, his closest working relationship in the league is with Ron. Can we please not? Gonna have to agree to disagree here. I'm not sold on what you're selling. Not seeing the case outside of excuses. AZ-not his fault, CLE-not his fault, this year-he had us competing, but PIT, BAL, CIN--not his fault. He was on board so was the man to give this nosedive a few nice punches on the way down to a soft landing. Doesn't mean he's suddenly the best captain, he was the best given the circumstance. Now's the time to broaden the field and compare him to the rest.

I haven't moved any. He lost by double digits 12 of his 19 losses as a HC. That's all. I don't think he's a quality enough coach.

Used to a while back, still stay there when I visit, have a bud and his wife that still live there. Right around Franklin & St Marks. In the midwest these days

Oh, just throwing out the odds, amazing what you can throw money in on these days haha. btw--Crown Heights says whattup

Appreciate the response. I understand your defense on that end you speak to. For me, still not sold on the prospect of Wilks. It just feels very Mike Pettine to me and I just would like to finally get past the Rivera & Rhule eras. It just feels like we've been caught in this slighty under .500 feedback loop and there's no end in sight. Full detachment. Wilks, and even Dorsey to a degree, would likely bring a lot of usual suspect back into the building. If people are criticizing the experience of some of these young coaches, I think it's fair to take note of Wilks' limited experience as a coordinator and HC. I don't think he'd necessarily do a bad job, the first TB game this year was fire. Great stuff. But I'd be lying if I wouldn't be absolutely deflated by us hiring him full time.

I ask you don't take this from discussable complaints to criticism of the people discussing. The whole "you don't know football" thing & going for a superiority complex over counter-opinions just lowers the bar and will now, undoubtedly, derail the discussion.
-
Perrrty much. It would also be nice to have someone not so intimately tied to the last 2 regimes that we all want to get away from. That fact alone just makes this scenario feel like such a complete and utter downer.
-
Do note, I didn't qualify the records, just said he took over McD's defense. That's one of only 2 years as a coordinator. Like I prefaced, AZ was likely not his doing but you have to take note and check things out. It doesn't mean all critique of him during that period can somehow be discounted. And yes, that is 5 years ago because he was subsequently with Cleveland, then wasn't even in football in 2020 and in Mizzou in 2021. No need to get into the nitty gritty when the big picture is so undoubtedly clear that we can and should do better. Losing by double digits is losing by double digits. Nothing against the guy, I'm not trying to mindlessly bash, but we have to move forward here.
-
I mentioned elsewhere, but it can't be lost that Wilks only has 2 entire years to his name as a coordinator in the NFL and 14 years overall experience. The fact is he was Ron Rivera's assistant since 2006 until the AZ job came along in 2017. The AZ HC season was probably a huge season of growth for him professionally even though the team and franchise was awful there, but overall, you don't really see much to go off. And even if it was crappy situation and they didn't give him time, that team nosedived and hard. Can't ignore that. As coordinator, one year was riding McD's defense with Luke, and the other was under Freddie Kitchens in Cleveland (They were ranked around 22nd that year). As HC, his teams have lost by double digits 12 times in 29 total games. Nahhh

My Bad Idea - Dorsey + Richardson + Wilks
Bear Hands replied to CPcavedweller's topic in Carolina Panthers
Well it's what he was here as the DB/AHC spot and for most of his career. People are losing sight that he's only been a coordinator for 2 years of his career. 2! in his 14 years of NFL experience. He's not even a proven coordinator people. (last line not directed at you Donald) -

If we don't hire Wilks, I'd say there's a higher likelihood he goes back to Ron in WAS as an AHC instead. -
New guesses after recent unfoldings: HC: Shane Steichen OC: Frank Reich DC: Vic Fangio QB: CJ Stroud, Gardner Minshew, Matt Corral Other Draft Picks: Rashee Rice, Zach Charbonnet, Luke Schoonmaker

Additional context...outside of AZ, the NFL staffs that brought him in were led by: Lovie/Ron Rivera (2006-2017) Position Coach and/or AHC sans 1 season of 11 Freddie Kitchens (2019) DC (staff was fired) Matt Rhule (2022) Not a coordinator That's the extent of his NFL career outside of that weird year in Arizona where, yep, he was fired.
