How long until the first Sam Darnold interception?
-
Backloading would require a multi-year contract. We should not be giving him a multi-year contract.

The problem with bringing Cam back is two-fold. One, you have to re-sign him. Why would Cam take anything less than $10m? His deal with the Patriots was worth up to $13m. Obviously, he didn't end up getting that. But that is around the ball-park it would take to bring him back. Otherwise I think Cam would just retire. So let's say he gets $10m. Then you have Darnold who is owed $18m. So to get the most value out of having Newton as a starter as opposed to Darnold, Cam Newton would need to be $28m better than Sam Darnold. Who can honestly say with a straight face that the Newton we've seen throw the ball is that much better than Darnold? It sucks but riding Darnold for one more year is, unfortunately, what makes the most sense unless we're bringing in a 1st round rookie or an elite starter. We need to stop trying to put bandaids over other bandaids.

What is Tepper seeing that nobody else here sees?
Mage replied to mc52beast's topic in Carolina Panthers
I feel somewhat confident that Matt Rhule will be let go after the season. I think there is too much fan demand. And publicly, the Panthers have been getting slammed lately. We're far worse off at the QB position now than we were when Rhule arrived... how is that even possible? We're short on draft picks in 2022. I'd argue the energy has been sapped out of this organization and fanbase to an extent I've never seen before... and trust me, I remember the 2010 season. I never thought it could get lower than that. But this season feels like a different kind of disappointment. At least we knew we would get to reset following 2010. 2011 was one of the most loaded drafts ever (and this is without hindsight; it was seen as loaded going in, and a lot of guys were talked about as potential #1-worthy candidates like Green and Miller), so we had that to look forward to plus a new head coach. But if we keep Rhule, I don't know, man. I could almost be cool with Hurney returning all those years because he'd at least deliver us a great 1st round pick. Like, I knew we would at least get something out of him being here. But what does Rhule get us? The fact of the matter is this team is underperforming this year. How does a defense with talent like Gilmore, Burns, Chinn, Jackson, Reddick, Thompson, not to mention our other young and highly-drafted players who should be improving, allow WFT, Dolphins, and Falcons to have some of their best days against us? I don't even buy into the QB excuse anymore. Sam Darnold's numbers are worse this year than in his previous 2 years with the Jets. How does that happen? Bad coaching. The Steelers are getting more out of old-as-hell Ben than we are Darnold. I didn't mind losing, when losing was expected. I'm not even super surprised we are going to have a losing season. But the manner in which it has happened? We're scoring less than we did last year. The defense, I don't even know what to think of, because they have really underperformed in too many games this year - the aforementioned WFT and Miami games, vs Minnesota, and vs Dallas. I don't think Matt Rhule is the worst head coach in the world. I do think that is an exaggeration. But I'm a big believer in that fit and situation matters. Right now, I do not think this is a situation you want him trying to rally your team out of. Changing a college program is a helluva lot different than changing an NFL franchise. I don't think that is something Rhule is capable of. He's not an X's and O's guy and his coordinator and position-coach choices have been terrible. And burned a bridge with a guy who is clearly well-thought of in the league like Joe Brady (not to say Brady didn't have his faults, but he wasn't the crux of the issue). Rhule is someone you hire to steady the ship, but when you want to turn your team around? I think, most of the time, you need a great X's and O's guy. Not a rah rah guy. Look at McVay with the Rams. Goff turned into a mediocre QB, but McVay got the best out of him and they were instantly a playoff team. Carroll had a lot of play-calling experience as a DC and was a fantastic DBs coach, plus a ton of other experience in the NFL and college. Payton, all-time X's and O's guy. Belichick, the all-time X's and O's guy. Reich, great X's and O's guy. Ditto Arians, although he's also a great motivator too. Ditto Reid. Tomlin is more of a rah-rah guy, but Tomlin didn't need to turn a franchise around. He needed to steady the ship, and he was perfect in that role. Cowher, again rah-rah guy but he steadied the ship. Not saying hiring an X's and O's guy ensures success. Obviously it doesn't. But I really think our next head coach hire needs to be someone who excels on one side of the ball and has a LOT of play-calling experience. I was one of the few people pushing for Josh McDaniels last go-around, and hopefully some people have come around on him. And not all retreads are the same. McDaniels was super young when he was the Broncos HC, 33. He's 45 now. He's learned a lot. I'd be cool but weary of Nathaniel Hackett. Do not want Brian Daboll, think the success of the offense has more to do with the physical skill-set of Josh Allen more than anything else. Kevin O'Connell, Bieniemy, Leftwich, and Kellen Moore also interest me. -
I think he could if he hired a really good offensive coordinator. I do think we have the talent. Obviously, we would need to find a way to get a QB. But I really think it is Rhule's nepotism that has maybe done him in the most. If he went out and got a highly sought after offensive coordinator and gave said person control over the offense? I do think with the talent we have and an upgrade at QB, we could push for the playoffs next year. But do I trust Matt Rhule to do that? Nah. I think it is far more likely Jeff Nixon is the offensive coordinator next year, if Rhule stays.

At the very least Rhule should lose personel decisions.
Mage replied to Zod's topic in Carolina Panthers
Once you do that, you may as well fire him as HC. By removing his personnel powers, you basically already tell him you are dissatisfied with his work and that will only create more friction/mistrust, especially if and when we missed the playoffs under him again next year. It is a shame because it isn't like we don't have talent. This team could easily turn it around and make the playoffs next year. But we mishandled this rebuild from the get go. We should have rode with Kyle Allen in 2020. We should have tanked. Instead we spent money and picks on things that aren't going to get us anywhere right now. I mean I actually think CJ Henderson has played very well and him and Horn are going to be a great combination next year. So that trade in isolation, to me, isn't bad. But when you consider we did it after already spending (wasting) a 2nd round pick next year on Darnold? Sheesh. It just hurts. I tried to be the optimistic and supported Rhule, but the mismanagement of this team has been baffling to say the least. I don't see how you can advocate bringing him back next year. As fans, we were given the illusion that Rhule was brought here to rebuild this team and take us through a process. That should, at the very least, mean having a QB on the roster who inspires confidence for the future. Bears suck, but at least they have Justin Fields to look forward to. Jaguars suck, but at least they have Trevor Lawrence to look forward to. Zach Wilson is just horrible, but the Jets will just get another super high-pick and have other draft picks at their disposal. Panthers wasted picks, wasted money, and have nothing to look forward to at QB. We wasted a prime opportunity to rebuild, just to end up likely having to rebuild anyway. And if we keep Rhule, how much worse can it get? I'm starting to think a lot worse. There is a big difference between building a college team around and building a pro team around. And all of this doesn't even touch on the fact that it is his ability to coach on gameday that is probably worse than anything else. I can see the roster being turned around, easily. But I don't think Rhule is going to get much better as a gameday coach. -
LMAO I hate Matt Rhule

I could maybe buy into Gruden getting another chance down the road if nothing else happened after, but he sealed his fate in regard to coaching opportunities once he sued the NFL/Goodell. He's blackballed.

Panthers' passer rating when targeted leaders (Offense)

Not their fault the QB play is crappy. -
See, the problem with the whole "don't draft a RB in the 1st round" argument is that it tries to say every situation is the same. Should the 2021 Lions draft a RB in the 1st round? Hell no But why shouldn't the 2021 Bills draft one? Why shouldn't the 2021 Patriots draft one? Elite RBs are a difference-maker. Yes, they have relatively shorter playing careers as an elite player than other positions, but the league changes way too much in 5 years IMO to not draft a guy just because he won't be good 5 years from now. If the Bills were in a position to take a McCaffrey in the draft, they absolutely should take him. I think a better way is to say bad teams shouldn't draft RBs in the 1st round, because it'll take too long to rebuild before RB is able to contribute to a winning team (in all likelihood). Good teams absolutely should take a RB if it is a need and will make an immediate difference.

Yes, but Fournette wasn't a good pick either. The article is insinuating that Fournette was the better pick, hence the opening statement, "while McCaffrey was headed to the locker-room, Fournette was scoring the game-winning touchdown." Yes, it is fair to argue that extending McCaffrey at that $ amount wasn't smart. But it is hard to take the article seriously when it largely seems to be suggesting that the Panthers would have been better off with Fournette. We all saw what Fournette was in Jacksonville, and they moved on from him. He's effective now because he plays with Tom Brady and a godly group of receivers. I'm sure if the Panthers had Brady, Evans, AB, Godwin, Gronk, Brate, Howard, and two great book-end tackles, we'd be getting more consistent results too. The article should have focused on the contract and taking McCaffrey where we did. But I have no earthly clue as to why it is trying to compare McCaffrey and Fournette. Fournette wasn't very good in Jacksonville beyond one year. And he isn't good now - he just plays for a far, far better team. McCaffrey was clearly the better player and the better pick (VS Fournette). Any other suggestion is nonsense.
-
Lol Fournette isn't a good back and wasn't a good pick either. Not really sure what the article is trying to suggest honestly? It could have made the argument that McCaffrey wasn't a good pick without also trying to draw parallels between him and Fournette. Fournette just so happens to play for an absolutely loaded offense.

Any in-shape 25 year old is going to be stronger and more agile than when they are 32.

WE SUCK

I clearly said he's one of the best young WRs. To suggest I called him the best young WR is a stupid as hell. You are the one saying we should let a WR who has done nothing but put up numbers regardless of QB or offense walk away.
-
One of the best. Learn reading comprehension. And he absolutely is one of the best young receivers. The numbers speak for themselves. You sound like a moron. Yes he has his issues but a lot of players do. You can't let a good player walk just because he doesn't do everything flawlessly.
-
Why do fans on this site constantly want to criticize Moore? He's not perfect but he's easily one of the best young WRs in the game. Letting him walk would be dumb as hell. Not his fault he's been saddled with horrible QBs and offenses.
