Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon
Mage replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
Clearly there is a reason Simpson is still on the board despite his "first round grade" -

Damn, I forgot how stacked our coaching staff is.

Who are we taking?!

Nothing wrong with being concerned. That is reasonable and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But to me it doesn't make sense that some people (not you) write him off because of his size when as Panther fans two of our most iconic players were undersized. Despite his size Young has often been the best player on any field he's been on. That doesn't guarantee NFL success, but what it tells me is this man must be doing something right off the field to be putting himself in a position to be the best despite his non-traditional side. Everything I hear about his mental and preparation gives me so much hope. Either way. I agree with you - Young has the potential to prove size doesn't matter like greats such as Mills before us. And I'm rooting so hard for him to succeed. Just seems like a likable guy who just wants to play football at the highest level.

An excuse to get drunk is always welcome, but I've never gotten the appeal of going to the draft. Maybe in a situation like this where my team was picking #1, but otherwise I feel like I'd rather just watch at home or a bar.

I feel like I said this a few weeks ago and got criticized. It doesn't make sense how so much of a fanbase of a team that has had guys like Steve Smith and Sam Mills, two iconic players overlooked because of their size, can be so judgmental of a player just because he doesn't fit the prototype. Those two players show that if you can play, you can play. If Nick Saban didn't count Young out because of his size, why the hell should we? And that is what Keep Pounding is all about. It ain't about the size. It is how you can play and how determined you are to keep getting better. Everything we've heard about Young is about how much he prepares and how hard he works. That is the kind of guy that I want on my team. Young will be a Panther great.

What? Just because you aren't as fast as Lamar Jackson doesn't mean you aren't fast enough to outrun a good amount of defenders. And it isn't like Bryce's game was dependent on outrunning anyway. He makes people miss with his ability to cut on a dime, which absolutely translates to Sunday.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I wonder if he will be the benefit of more RTP calls than others because of his small stature.

Yeah, that could be an issue. But sometimes you have to take the bad with the good. Not every QB will be perfect, you just hope they maximize their strengths rather than their weaknesses. Reminds me of Russ. People crapped on the Seahawks OL, but Russ was responsible for a LOT of those sacks. But Russ' improvisation is also what made him so damn good for so long too. So kind of a double-edged sword, ya know? But I do agree with you. He will need to be smarter about what plays he chooses to extend or not.

Great game for anyone to watch if they want to see Young overcome adversity and take some hard hits. Also Young's ability to reset his feet after escaping the pocket and throw a dime is special. He can throw off-platform so well if he has too. Look at 6:45. Jukes the hell out of someone, still keeps eyes downfield, gets feet set and throws a strike. Not many college QBs are doing that.

Did you not read my post? Mac Jones and Tua played with far better Alabama receivers than Bryce did. If Bryce had Ruggs, Waddle, Smith, and Jeudy, I bet you he matches or eclipses Tua's numbers.
-
Tua's Bama teams were at another level when it comes to offensive talent compared to Bryce. Tua in 2018/2019 had Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, Ruggs, Waddle, DeVonta, and Jeudy. Bryce played with some great guys too but not nearly as stacked as what Tua or even Mac Jones had. Personally Bryce's playmaking ability gives him a big advantage over Tua for me as a prospect.

Welcome to Carolina Short King, Bryce Young. Buying his jersey Day 1.

With less than 2 weeks to go, the decision-makers haven't discussed who they are learning towards for No. 1 overall pick. You really believe that?

Person: Richardson still in the conversation...if we trade down
Mage replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
I will walk Uptown Charlotte and post a picture in just my boxers if the Panthers trade down from #1. It makes no sense whatsoever. And the idea the Texans wouldn't have have anyone connected enough to know by draft day whether the Panthers intend on drafting Young or not isn't believable in the slightest. Which makes it hard for me to buy into the idea the Panthers are playing a long-game of trying to fool the Texans. Nobody knows how the first/second round will play out better than the literal NFL teams do.
